Live Report: SHADOW PLAY Fest. vol. 6 @ Kyttaro Club – Athens, Greece, 13/12/2014

Two days at Kyttaro Club in Athens - Greece for the last (?) SHADOW PLAY Festival, and fans of Rory Gallagher from all over the place gathered to honor for one more time his memory, the way only devotees can do. Rockoverdose.gr was there, the 2nd and last day of the festival, which has become a custom for the last years, a festival which can only be described by those who’ve been there, when Rory had visited Greece back in the 80’s or wished to have been there and have at least Rory’s music as the soundtrack of their lives!

Few minutes after 22:00, Barry Barnes aka Sinnerboy, enters the scene of Kyttaro Club offering an excellent one man show including only great music coming from the magic sound of his guitar and of course the positive vibes…of “Just the smile, which could warm up the room and set fire to the place!”. Barry Barnes was soon accompanied with the talented Greek musician Manos Kambouris, on guitar and they perfectly jammed together with non-stop sing along by the audience!

Shortly after Sinnerboys’ act, the “Band Of Friends” followed  a warm applause. Gerry Mc Avoy, Ted MacKenna and Marcel Scherpenzeel entered the scene and took us back to the era when they’re jamming together with Great Rory! I won’t exaggerate at all if I use the cliché expression “Rory was somewhere up there and listened to us …”, only those who’ve experienced that performance could feel it! In a magical way music like a time travel machine can place you where ever your mind and your soul is…and that’s exactly what happened from the very first notes and riffs of the hymns that surrounded us that night at the crowded Kyttaro Club or … “Quitar-o" if you like.

Highlight of the evening for me was when the Band Of Friends and Sinnerboy, Barry Barnes shared the stage together and played a best-of setlist  along with all of us who couldn’t stop singing, dancing and applauding!

Only unique images and feelings ... have left to be described but I can say no more than congratulations to the great team that organized the last few years this Festival!  SHADOW PLAY Fest, was a dream of many die-hard fans of Rory Gallagher’s music legacy! I wish this time was not the last one because we need to keep this heritage alive, for us and for the younger generations to come. The music of Rory is alive! We keep it alive because WE are the Band Of Friends of the Great Irishman!

Looking forward to experience it again!

Cheers
