In a few days , the second album of British band Sūrya entitles “Solastalgia” is going to be released. “Solastalgia” consists of 5 songs and has a total runtime a little above 30 minutes. Following almost the same sludge/post-rock and metal paths with “Apocalypse A.D.”, Sūrya manage to keep the stakes high and prove that they are one of the upcoming bands in the post-rock/metal genre.

Sūrya’s sound is gloomy and depressive and at times bends the limits towards post-black metal. In general, if one asked me to describe their sound, I would say they are a blend of God is an Astronaut , If These Trees Could Talk and Harakiri for the Sky along with a bit of sludge and doom. This heaviness in their sound is a new element in their sound since their debut album had a milder tone – a more post-rockish I’d say – and another surprise in “Solastalgia” is the vocals. However, emphasis is clearly given on the instrumental parts with the lead and rhythm guitar stealing the show throughout the album.

As mentioned before , “Solastalgia” consists of 5 brilliant songs, of which 3 are longer than 7’ . “Anthropocene” and “The Purpose” set the tone and atmosphere of the album , preparing the listener for the raw power and heaviness to come with the last two . The middle one , named “Fenland” , feels like a bridge that connects the former two songs with the last two . “Black Snake Prophecy” and “The Saviours” might be a little bit shorter but feel much heavier and the vocals add a lot towards that direction. Personally , I believe “Black Snake Prophecy” stands out for me as the most powerful song of the album , but this does not mean that the rest of the songs are weak at all !

So, to conclude, Sūrya’s second release is as good as the first one , if not better. I was really satisfied with the production and mix/master quality. Musically, the album is actually great, the vocals blend in with music and the whole atmosphere in the nicest way possible and enhance the whole experience. “Solastalgia” is released on the 26th of July , so post-rockers , sludge/doomers and in general , fans of this genre be sure to check Sūrya out and you will not be disappointed !
