11, 12 & 14 September 2013 in Lycabettus Theater, the Legendary Scorpions are going to give three very special shows in Athens, for MTV Unplugged. Those will be taped to become history, as the DVD will be distributed in 47 coutries.
Three concerts with a sole project , which will be presented exclusively in Greece! Rock Overdose contacted the band's drummer, James Kottak, and he agreed to answer our questions, just a few days before this big endeavor.
Enjoy the conversation that follows...
Rock Overdose: MTV Unplugged Live in Athens, Greece. Tell us for this exceptional release. How did you decide to do that, what will it include, and of course why Athens? Why Greece?
James Kottak: Why Greece? We Love Greece...The people make it incredible! We wanted to do a very special show in one of the most special venues in the world...Greece!
Rock Overdose: You have played in huge venues in Greece in front of massive crowds. Why did you choose a significally smaller venue like the lycabettus theater? And why three concerts?
James Kottak: Well, the show we bring is intimate and we wanted a more personal setting than a stadium.
We are filming for rtl, mtv unplugged and other media, so we film 2 out of the 3 nights to get the best of the best performance!
Rock Overdose: Are you going to play different material each day? Will you also include songs you usually don't play or have never played live? Give us some directions for the songs you will play.
James Kottak: Of course we will play many of the Scorpions classics, but, we will also visit many of the songs we have wanted to play from the past but just haven't had the opportunity. There will also be debuts of a few brand new songs as well! we are soooo excited!
Rock Overdose: Tell us a few .secrets regarding the guest musicians. Who will accompany you on-stage?
James Kottak: If i told you then it wouldn't be a secret?!
Rock Overdose: An acoustic concert is going to be completely different from what you have been doing in the past. Does it make you anxious for the result? What do you think it is going to add to scorpions legacy?
James Kottak: We did acoustica in 2001...It was recorded in lisbon and was a huge challenge and became a huge success. we are always anxious and a bit nervous presenting new material...This is defiantly going to be one of those very special events...
Rock Overdose: You know that the connection between the Greek fans and Scorpions is one of a kind. how can you explain this? What is the basis of this extraordinary relation?
James Kottak: The Greeks are so passionate and over the top...Just like the scorpions, we are one in the same.
Rock Overdose: Scorpions must be the most beloved Germans in Greece, knowing the tension that has developed between Germany and Greece due to the crisis. You yourself of course are not German but how do you see things evolving globally? Does the situation make you frustrated?
James Kottak: I am always frustrated when governments don't agree...Life is short...Let's just enjoy our time here!
Rock Overdose: James, 17 years in the band. What is your happiest moment so far in Scorpions? And what is your favorite Scorpion song when playing live?
James Kottak: The first show i played with the Scorpions was surreal...a dream! "I can't stay" is my fav Scorps song
Rock Overdose: Are you sure it is going to be your farewell tour? Seems that you look very active. seems that retirement can wait. scorpions have to give a lot and the fans love them. Do you have plans for a new album? Any possible release date or direction of the material?
James Kottak: Farewell tour doesn't mean the band is breaking up...We have a lot of life to give!
Rock Overdose: In your point of view, how have Scorpions influenced the rock and metal music? What is the Scorpions' heritage for the generations and musicians to come?
James Kottak: Hopefully the new generation will somehow be influenced by the Scorpions...At the end of the day, it's just rock & roll!
Rock Overdose: It is going to be one of the greatest live moments the Greek fans are going to experience and a great honor that you will record this material and release it worldwide. Please give a message to the Greek fans, that are really eager for this.
James Kottak: Returning to Greece is like magic...We are one with all of our Greek friends and look forward to celebrating 3 wonderful nights in a celebration of Scorpions music!
