Πολλές από τις σημαντικότερες στιγμές του rock 'n' roll έχουν έρθει με τη μορφή κυκλοφοριών album, η κατάταξη των οποίων έχει αμφισβητηθεί έντονα από τις απαρχές υιοθέτησης αυτού format από τη μουσική βιομηχανία (και έχει γίνει αρκετές φορές αιτία τσακωμού μεταξύ των μουσικόφιλων). Είναι σχεδόν αδύνατο να βρεθεί ένα αντικειμενικός τρόπος για το ποιος δίσκος είναι καλύτερος, καθώς ο καθένας από εμάς σχηματίζει εξαιρετικά υποκειμενικούς δεσμούς με τη μουσική που έχουμε δεθεί πιο πολύ στη ζωή μας. Έτσι, το Stacker αποφάσισε να συντάξει μια λίστα με τα 100 καλύτερα rock albums με τη βοήθεια δεδομένων από το Best Ever Albums (τελευταία ενημέρωση στις 28 Αυγούστου), το οποίο κατατάσσει τα άλμπουμ ανάλογα με την εμφάνιση και την επίδοσή τους σε 40.000 editorial και data-based charts όπως το Rolling Stone, το Pitchfork και το Billboard.
