The expectation for the new album by Swedish Occult Doom Rockers Year Of The Goat is finally over since on the 6th of September their long awaited “Novis Orbis Terrarum Ordinis” will be released. The band had a really tough task for their third album because they had to find a way of overcoming their amazing previous album “The Unspeakable” which was released in 2015. And they managed !
YES , “Novis Orbis Terrarum Ordinis” is a masterpiece indeed. It consists of 9 songs, 2 of which have already been released in the form of singles. I’m referring of course to “Avaritia” and “Superbia” , two really good samples for anyone to get a little glimpse and a first taste of the new album . “Subortus” is the first track of the album ,starting with a nice heavy riff , fitting for a nice Occult Doom Rock album . In general , the third album of the band is characterized by heavy but simultaneously clear melodies and 100% to the spot combination of elements by Occult and Doom music genres, proof that Year Of The Goat are constantly maturing musically. Next on , we have the more upbeat songs “Acedia” and “Luxuria”, tracks that have obvious influences by the 60’s and 70’s , something which is also a characteristic of the new album . Things get a little slower (at first) with the 9 minute long song “Ira” but its second part/outro , a little after the fifth minute spot , the band gives us one of the best outros of the album which set the scene perfectly for “Superbia” to follow. Reminder that “Superbia” is already out in the form of single. “Superbia” is without a doubt one of the best songs of the album and I dare say ,one of the band’s best song ever and this might be exactly the reason I found “Gula” to be the weakest song in “Novis …” . The next song is “Avaritia” (which is out as a single) and has already won a place in my heart . Heading towards the end of the album , there’s “Invidia” which is another track that’s clearly influenced by 60’s-70’s sounds , especially on the guitars of the song. Now , can you imagine a Year Of The Goat album without a masterpiece which is longer than 10’ ? No you can’t and that’s why the band kept the 14 minute long “Subicio” for the grand finale ! There are no words to describe this excellent piece of music which manages to keep the listener interested throughout its whole duration. Definitely , The Swedes know their way around long songs that do not become boring and repetitive, just for the sake of it.
So, “Novis Orbis Terrarum Ordinis” is undoubtedly a worthy successor to “The Unspeakable” and creates even greater expectations for the band’s next work. Unfortunately, there are very few fine Occult Rock bands out there right now and albums like this one are exactly what the fans of the genre need and long for. It might have taken them 4 years for the new Year Of The Goat album to drop , but it was definitely worth it !
“Novis Orbis Terrarum Ordinis” is released on the 6th of September through Napalm Records and you must should check it out !
