H 18η έκδοση του UP THE HAMMERS FESTIVAL είναι προ των πυλών και το RockOverdose βρήκε την ευκαιρία να μάθει τα τελευταία νέα των συγκροτημάτων που θα εμφανιστούν στις δύο κύριες μέρες του festival που θα λάβουν χώρα την Παρασκευή 8 και το Σάββατο 9 Μαρτίου στο Gagarin 205.

Σας καλωσορίζουμε στο RockOverdose. Πώς είστε αυτό τον καιρό και τί ετοιμάζεται ως group;
CIRITH UNGOL: Εδώ Robert Garven, o ντράμερ των Cirith Ungol. Έχουμε ανακοινώσει την τελευταία χρονιά περιοδείας για την μπάντα μας η οποία σχηματίστηκε το 1971 στην Ventura της California. Ανυποπομονούμε για μία πλήρη χρονιά με μερικά πραγματικά πανέμορφα σόου σε όλο τον κόσμο, με στάσεις σε Ευρώπη, Αυστραλία, Νότια Αμερική και Ηνωμένες Πολιτείες.
Jack Starr's BURNING STARR: Γειά σου Rock Overdose, είμαστε καλά και κάνουμε πρόβες για το Up The Hammers, επίσης αρχίζουμε να προετοιμάζουμε ένα νέο δίσκο που έχει τον αβέβαιο ακόμα τίτλο “Chasing The Ghost”.
COVEN JAPAN: Γεια σου Άγγελε και Rock Overdose. Ευχαριστούμε για τη συνέντευξη! Οι Coven Japan κυκλοφόρησαμε το πρώτο μας πλήρες άλμπουμ στην No Remorse Records από τη χώρα σας Ελλάδα. Οι πωλήσεις του «Earthlings» είναι επίσης εξαιρετικές, το κόκκινο βινύλιο ήταν ήδη sold out τις πρώτες μέρες της ημέρας κυκλοφορίας. Υπέροχες κριτικές και υψηλές βαθμολογίες για το άλμπουμ και ούτω καθεξής, τώρα έχουμε πολλές καταπληκτικές απαντήσεις από όλο τον κόσμο. οπότε είμαστε πολύ χαρούμενοι.
Όλα αυτά είναι η δύναμη για τη δημιουργία του επόμενου δεύτερου άλμπουμ μας. Αυτό τον Φεβρουάριο, παίξαμε με τους Mindless Sinner, Riot City και ιαπωνικά θρυλικά συγκροτήματα. Ήταν εκρηκτικές νύχτες και φοβερές εμπειρίες.
Το UP THE HAMMERS FESTIVAL θα είναι η πρώτη ζωντανή εμφάνιση του συγκροτήματος στην Ευρώπη. Ανυπομονώ! Το περιμένουμε πολύ.

QUARTZ: Γεια σας! Είμαι ο Malcom Cope, drummer των QUARTZ από το Μπέρμιγχαμ της Αγγλίας (The Home of Heavy Metal). Αυτή τη στιγμή προετοιμαζόμαστε και να κάνουμε πρόβες για το φεστιβάλ Up The Hammers και να ετοιμάζουμε νέο υλικό!
STYGIAN CROWN: Γεία σου Rock Overdose! Ευχαριστούμε για την ευκαιρία να μιλήσουμε μαζί σας. Η μπάντα είναι πολύ χαρούμενη για την επερχόμενη κυκλοφορία του δεύτερου μας άλμπουμ “Funeral For A King” και τα φεστιβάλ που θα παίξουμε για να το προωθήσουμε. Η ανταπόκριση για το άλμπουμ είναι συντριπτικά θετική και είμαστε πολύ ευτυχισμένοι γι’αυτό.
EVIL INVADERS: Αυτή τη στιγμή δουλεύουμε στο επόμενο μας άλμπουμ. Γράφουμε τραγούδια και ετοιμάζουμε το νέο μας στήσιμο στη σκηνή. Αυτή τη χρονιά παίζουμε μόνο σε κάποια φεστιβάλ, δεν έχουμε σχεδιάσει μεγάλη περιοδεία. Η κύρια συγκέντρωση μας αυτή τη στιγμή είναι να δημιουργήσουμε το 4ο άλμπουμ.
STEEL INFERNO: Είμαστε ενθουσιασμένοι που θα παίξουμε στο UP THE HAMMERS στην Ελλάδα. Έχει περάσει πολύς καιρός, αλλά τώρα είμαστε εδώ για να φέρουμε το Copenhagen Speed Metal Attack! - Τον περασμένο μήνα ήμασταν στο στούντιο ηχογραφώντας το επόμενο άλμπουμ μας "Rush of Power" που θα κυκλοφορήσει κάποια στιγμή φέτος στα τέλη του καλοκαιριού / αρχές φθινοπώρου.
Σε έναν κόσμο με αμέτρητα συγκροτήματα, πώς αποφασίσατε να δημιουργήσετε το δικό σας, ποια ήταν η έμπνευση και ποιες οι επιρροές σας; Τι πιστεύετε ότι έχετε να προσφέρετε στους ακροατές;
CIRITH UNGOL: Ξεκινήσαμε μια και θέλαμε να παίξουμε το heavy metal με το οποίο μεγαλώσαμε και έχουμε υπηρετήσει αυτή την αποστολή μέχρι και αυτή τη συγκεκριμένη μέρα. Η μπάντα διέλυσε το 1991 επειδή η heavy metal μουσική που παιζόταν εκείνη την εποχή δεν ήταν αντιπροσωπευτική του τι ήταν το αληθινό heavy metal. Επανασχηματιστήκαμε το 2016 λόγω μεγάλης απαίτησης και έχουμε παίξει πολλά φεστιβάλ και σόου. Επίσης κυκλοφορήσαμε το ζωντανό άλμπουμ “I’m Alive”, το single “Witch’s Game” και δυο πολύ βαριά άλμπουμ, το “Forever Black” και την τελευταία μας κυκλοφορία “Dark Parade”. Αν θέλετε να μάθετε τι έχουμε να προσφέρουμε στους οπαδούς μας, όλα όσα έχετε να κάνετε είναι να ακούσετε αυτά τα δυο τελευταία άλμπουμ και θα πάρετε την απάντηση σας.
Jack Starr's BURNING STARR: Σχημάτισα τους Burning Starr αφού έφυγα από τους Virgin Steel και ο Νed ο μπάσίστας κι εγώ αρχίσαμε να ξαναπαίζουμε μαζί 20 χρόνια πριν και αποφασίσαμε ότι θέλουμε να συνεχίσουμε κι έτσι είμαστε εδώ με ένα φοβερό line-up με τον Rhino στα τύμπανα, τον Alexx στα φωνητικά και τον Kevin Burnes στην κιθάρα, νομίζω ότι μπορούμε να ορίσουμε τους εαυτούς μας ως σύνδεση με την υπέροχη μουσική των ‘80s. Η έμπνευση μας σαν μπάντα είναι τα μεγάλα γκρουπ των ‘70s/’80s όπως οι Zeppelin, Purple και οι μεγάλοι Sabs (δηλαδή οι Black Sabbath, και για μένα προσωπικά σαν κιθαρίστα οι Clapton, Beck, Page, B.B. King).
COVEN JAPAN: Αρχικά, σχηματιστήκαμε ως ένα metal project δύο ατόμων που αποτελούνταν από εμένα (Taka) και τον κιθαρίστα Akihiro. Μας αρέσει και στους δύο το παραδοσιακό metal και θέλαμε να δημιουργήσουμε πρωτότυπη μουσική.
Αφού γράψαμε ένα τραγούδι και το ανεβάσαμε στο Bandcamp, λάβαμε προτάσεις από πολλές δισκογραφικές για να το κυκλοφορήσουμε και τελικά καταλήξαμε να υπογράψουμε με τη Svart Records και να κυκλοφορήσουμε το πρώτο μου EP, «The Advent».
Σε αυτό το σημείο, ήμασταν ακόμα ένα metal project δύο κομματιών, αλλά επειδή πήραμε τόσο θετική ανταπόκριση με το 'The Advent' από όλο τον κόσμο, σκεφτήκαμε ότι έπρεπε να κάνουμε ζωντανές εμφανίσεις, οπότε συγκεντρώσαμε τα μέλη πριν από μερικά χρόνια και σχημάτισε ένα πενταμελές συγκρότημα.
Τώρα είμαστε πολύ χαρούμενοι που η μουσική μας ακούγεται πλέον σε όλο τον κόσμο και λαμβάνει τόσο θετική ανταπόκριση. Πιστεύουμε ότι το καλύτερο είναι ότι γράφουμε υπέροχη μουσική, την κυκλοφορούμε και παίζουμε με πάθος σε όλο τον κόσμο.
Η έμπνευση και οι επιρροές μας είναι το NWOBHM και το heavy metal της δεκαετίας του '80, αλλά έχουμε επίσης διάφορες επιρροές από το hard rock της δεκαετίας του '70, τη μουσική από τη δεκαετία του '90 και μετά, όχι μόνο metal, αλλά και σκληροπυρηνική punk και pop.
Αν πρέπει να αναφέρω κάποιες μπάντες ως επιρροές θα έλεγα, από NWOBHM, Angel Witch, Satan, Diamond Head, Praying Mantis, Demon, Witchfinder General, Tank, Virtue, Bashful Alley, Persian Risk κ.λπ. Καθώς και μπάντες που ήταν ενεργές κυρίως τη δεκαετία του '80, Metallica, Mercyful Fate, Manowar, Riot, Trouble, Helloween, Accept, Celtic Frost, Sepultura, Kreator, Prasite(Swe), Bathory και στην Ιαπωνία Loudness, Anthem, X κ.ο.κ..
Συγκροτήματα πριν από τη δεκαετία του '80, Judas Priest, Wishbone Ash, Thin Lizzy, Rainbow, Scorpions, UFO, Sebastian Hardie, Boston, κ.λπ.
Εκτός από metal μπάντες, εμπνεόμαστε επίσης από πολλές σκληροπυρηνικές μπάντες punk, καθώς και πιο έντονες μπάντες όπως οι Bad Brains, Cro-mags, Minor Threat, Fugazi, Gorilla Biscuits, Youth of Today και Dag Nasty, Death Side κ.λπ.
Όσον αφορά τη στάση, ο κιθαρίστας μας Aki και εγώ είμαστε vegan straight edge, οπότε επηρεαζόμαστε και από τέτοιου είδους μπάντες. Από τη δεκαετία του '90 και μετά, οι Ningen-Isu, Metalucifer, Carcass, Napalm Death, Cathedral, Earth Crisis και μελωδικά σκληροπυρηνικά punk συγκροτήματα όπως Leatherface, HDQ, Hooton 3 Car, Rise Against.
Εμπνεόμαστε επίσης από την ιαπωνική ροκ/ποπ μουσική, συμπεριλαμβανομένων πολλών τραγουδιών anime. Είπα "κάποια"... αλλά τελικά ήταν τόσα πολλά.. χαχαχαχα ναι, είμαστε music junkies.
QUARTZ: Οι Quartz δημιουργήθηκαν αφού πιο πριν όλοι ήμασταν σε διαφορετικά συγκροτήματα. Είχαμε δουλέψει μαζί σε διαφορετικές μορφές και σε διάφορες χρονικές στιγμές, οπότε πήραμε μια συνειδητή απόφαση να κάνουμε μια μεγάλη προσπάθεια όλοι μαζί και να προσπαθήσουμε να γίνουμε μια αναγνωρισμένη μπάντα. Αρχικά ονομαζόμασταν BANDY LEGS και μετά αλλάξαμε το όνομά μας σε QUARTZ στις αρχές του 1977. Είχαμε/έχουμε μια μεγάλη γκάμα επιρροών, αλλά σε όλους μας αρέσει ένα πιο ροκ και δυνατό στυλ μουσικής που θέλαμε να αναπτύξουμε και να παίξουμε.
STYGIAN CROWN: Ο Rhett Davis, ιδρυτικό μέλος της doom/death μπάντας Morgion (ΘΕΟΘΕΟΙ ΤΗΣ ΥΠΑΡΞΗΣ), ήρθε με την ιδέα για μία επική doom μπάντα αφού η επανένωση των Morgion στο Maryland Deathfest το 2011 απέτυχε. O Rhett και οι σύντροφοι του στη death/thrash μπάντα Gravehill, ήθελαν πάντα να ιδρύσουν ένα doom project στο ύφος των ηρώων τους Candlemass και Solitude Aeturnus, έτσι το 2015, οι αρχικοί σπόροι των Stygian Crown φυτεύτηκαν. Η μπάντα προσφέρει μια μοναδική εκδοχή του είδους, φέρνοντας ένα μαζικό doom/death ήχο με καθαρά γυναικεία φωνητικά.
EVIL INVADERS: Όταν σχημάτισα αυτή τη μπάντα το 2007 δεν σκεφτόμουν πραγματικά όλα αυτά. Ο κύριος στόχος ήταν απλά να τζαμάρω με φίλους, να παρτάρω και να ροκάρουμε με τη μουσική που αγαπάμε. Δεν υπήρχε απολύτως κανένα σχέδιο πίσω από αυτό. Ήθελα απλά να παίξω κλασικό heavy/thrash metal υλικό. Μπάντες όπως οι Deep Purple, Exodus, Dio, Flotsam And Jetsam, Meryful Fate, Motörhead, Black Sabbath και Judas Priest έχουν υπάρξει ανέκαθεν μεγάλη επιρροή για μένα. Όσο πέρναγε ο χρόνος, ανακάλυψα περισσότερες μπάντες που με επηρέασαν και όσο άλλαζαν τα μέλη στο συγκρότημα, η πάντα εξελισσόταν. Σήμερα μπορείς να ακούσεις ένα ευρύ φάσμα επιρροών που πάει από το κλασικό ροκ μέχρι και το death metal στη μουσική μας. Μέσα στα χρόνια δημιουργήσαμε ένα στυλ που είναι ιδιαίτερα αναγνωρίσιμο από τις άλλες μπάντες εκεί έξω αυτό τον καιρό. Αν ο κόσμος με ρωτήσει τι στυλ μουσικής παίζουμε, αυτές τις μέρες νομίζω θα περιγραφόταν καλύτερα ως “Extreme Heavy Metal”.
STEEL INFERNO: Δεν επιλέξαμε εμείς το Speed Metal, το Speed Metal μας επέλεξε - και εννοούμε αυτό. Κανείς δεν έπαιζε τόσο γρήγορα στη Δανία όταν σχηματιστήκαμε, οπότε είχε έρθει η ώρα να ανάψει κάποιος τη δάδα και να το πραγματοποιήσει. Αυτοί έτυχε να είμαστε εμείς και έτσι γεννήθηκαν οι Steel Inferno.
Είμαστε επηρεασμένοι από θρύλους όπως οι Savage Grace, Agent Steel και Helstar. Γενικά ό,τι έχει ταχύτητα αλλά και δύναμη.
Υπάρχουν πολλά συγκροτήματα στη σκηνή και πολλά από αυτά είναι υπέροχα. Εμείς από πλευράς μας δίνουμε στους θαυμαστές ταχύτητα, μελωδία και αδιάλλακτη θέληση να τους προκαλέσουμε μανιακή διάθεση και νιώθω ότι αυτό είναι που μας κάνει να ξεχωρίζουμε.
Πώς νιώθετε για τη συμμετοχή σας στο UP THE HAMMERS FESTIVAL και που θα μοιραστείτε τη σκηνή με τόσο σπουδαία συγκροτήματα;
CIRITH UNGOL: Μας ζητήθηκε να είμαστε οι headliners στο Up The Hammers το 2017 και γίναμε στενοί φίλοι με τον Μανώλη, τον διοργανωτή. Πραγματικά διασκεδάσαμε να παίζουμε σε αυτό το απίστευτο φεστιβάλ, με το πάθος των Ελλήνων οπαδών και νιώσαμε κατάλληλο να παίξουμε το τελευταίο μας Ελληνικό σόου στο φεστιβάλ.
Jack Starr's BURNING STARR: To Up The Hammers έχει καλή φήμη ότι φέρνει ποιοτικές μπάντες και μου φαίνεται ότι πολλή δουλειά τρέχει στο να υπάρξει ένα σόου ποιότητας. Είμαι περήφανος που οι Burning Starr θα είναι μέρος του αυτή τη χρονιά. Πιστεύω οι οπαδοί μας και ακόμα και άνθρωποι που μπορεί να μη μας έχουν ακούσει ποτέ θα δουν μια μπάντα επαγγελματιών που παίζουν με πολλή δύναμη και αποφασιστικότητα και περήφανοι να δώσουν ένα σόου, κι επίσης αυτή είναι η πρώτη φορά που θα έχω παίξει κάποια από τα μεγάλα Virgin Steele κομμάτια που βοήθησα να γραφτούν 40 χρόνια πριν, έτσι εγώ προσωπικά ανυπομονώ πολύ γι’αυτό.
COVEN JAPAN: Φυσικά, γνωρίζουμε το Up The Hammers εδώ και αρκετό καιρό ως ένα από τα μεγάλα φεστιβάλ του παραδοσιακού metal.
Είμαστε ενθουσιασμένοι κάθε χρόνο όταν βλέπουμε τη σύνθεση και θέλαμε να παίξουμε κάποια στιγμή σε αυτό, οπότε είμαστε πραγματικά χαρούμενοι και τιμή μας που μπορούμε να παίξουμε αυτή τη φορά.
QUARTZ: Οι Quartz γνωρίζουν το Up The Hammers Festival εδώ και πολύ καιρό. Μας ζητήθηκε να παίξουμε το 2015 (νομίζω;), αλλά λόγω συνθηκών εκείνη την εποχή δεν μπορούσαμε δυστυχώς. Fast forward σχεδόν 10 χρόνια τώρα και είμαστε πολύ ενθουσιασμένοι και όλοι ανυπομονούμε να εμφανιστούμε στο φεστιβάλ και να παίξουμε στην Ελλάδα για πρώτη φορά.
STYGIAN CROWN: Η μπάντα και ίσως και οι οπαδοί επίσης, περίμεναν πολύ καιρό να καταφέρουμε να έρθουμε στην Ελλάδα. Η πανδημία μας έκανε όλους στην άκρη στο Line-up του 2021, και είμαστε μόλις τώρα ικανοί να έρθουμε εκεί. Είμαστε υπόχρεοι και ταπεινοί που έχουμε την ευκαιρία να παίξουμε στην άλλη άκρη του κόσμου σε ανθρώπους που πραγματικά αγαπάνε τη μουσική μας. Το σόου του Σαββάτου θα ανοίξει με ένα ισχυρό συνδυασμό παλιού και νέου υλικού Stygian Crown. Ελπίζουμε όλοι να καταφέρουν να είναι εκεί νωρίς.
EVIL INVADERS: Παίξαμε στο φεστιβάλ μια φορά το 2013 όταν το πρώτο μας ΕΡ είχε μόλις κυκλοφορήσει και το φεστιβάλ κλώτσησε κώλους. Δεν έχουμε τίποτα πέρα από μεγάλες αναμνήσεις από το φεστιβάλ. Είμαι πολύ χαρούμενος που επιστρέφουμε. Δεν είχαμε πραγματικά την ευκαιρία να παίξουμε στην Ελλάδα ενώ περιοδεύαμε στην Ευρώπη εξ’αιτίας της θέσης της στο χάρτη (ΑΛΛΟΣ ΕΝΑΣ ΠΟΥ ΤΟ ΠΕΡΙΓΡΑΦΕΙ ΑΠΛΑ, ΓΙΑ ΝΑ ΜΗ ΛΕΤΕ ΜΕΡΙΚΟΙ «Α ΔΕ ΒΛΕΠΟΥΜΕ ΠΛΕΟΝ ΣΥΝΑΥΛΙΕΣ»). Αυτό είναι πραγματικά ντροπή. Θα λάτρευα να παίζω περισσότερο στην Ελλάδα. Θα αρπάξουμε αυτή την ευκαιρία να ροκάρουμε τα κέρατα μας σ’αυτό το μέρος και να σας δώσουμε μια έκρηξη ωμής ενέργειας.
STEEL INFERNO: Γνωρίζαμε πολύ καλά το Up The Hammers πριν μας προσκαλέσουν. Είναι ένας φάρος του heavy metal και είμαστε εξαιρετικά περήφανοι που βρισκόμαστε μαζί με τόσους πολλούς θαυμαστές και ένα πλήθος που είναι τόσο βαθιά ριζωμένο στο ατσάλι. Το κοινό μπορεί να περιμένει ένα εντυπωσιακό speed metal show, τόσο με παλιά όσο και νεότερα τραγούδια. Θα παίξουμε επίσης ένα εντελώς νέο τραγούδι που δεν έχουμε ξαναπαίξει από το επερχόμενο άλμπουμ μας «Rush of Power».
Πόσο ικανοποιημένοι είστε από το πιο πρόσφατο υλικό σας;
CIRITH UNGOL: Το τελευταίο μας άλμπουμ “Dark Parade” νιώθω πως είναι η βαρύτερη μουσική που έχουμε δημιουργήσει, αν είχα να αλλάξω ένα πράγμα θα ήταν να το κάνω ακόμα βαρύτερο!!!
Jack Starr's BURNING STARR: Το τελευταίο μας άλμπουμ “Souls Of The Innocent” έχει φοβερή παραγωγή, είναι καλογραμμένο και με φοβερή απόδοση άλμπουμ. Ελπίζω ότι αυτό δεν ακούγεται ιδιοτελές αλλά πραγματικά δε θα άλλαζα τίποτα σε αυτό το άλμπουμ. Πιστεύω όλοι οι οπαδοί του power metal θα έπρεπε να το αγοράσουν, θα εκπλαγούν από το πόσο καλό είναι.
COVEN JAPAN: Όπως ανέφερα προηγουμένως, πράγματι λάβαμε υπέροχο feedback σε όλο τον κόσμο. αλλά για να είμαι ειλικρινής, δεν είμαστε ικανοποιημένοι. Γιατί αν το συγκρότημα είναι ικανοποιημένο με τα δικά του τραγούδια και ερμηνείες, νομίζουμε ότι δεν υπάρχει πρόοδος και ανάπτυξη. Όσον αφορά το επόμενο άλμπουμ, θα δημιουργήσουμε νέα τραγούδια χρησιμοποιώντας το ένα και μοναδικό μας χαρακτηριστικό περισσότερο από αυτή τη φορά.
QUARTZ: Είμαστε όλοι πολύ ευχαριστημένοι με το τελευταίο μας υλικό και δεν θέλουμε να αλλάξουμε τίποτα ουσιαστικά εκτός από τις συνήθεις τροποποιήσεις εδώ και εκεί κατά τη διάρκεια του mastering κ.λπ.
STYGIAN CROWN: Το νέο άλμπουμ έχει υπάρξει ένα φανταστικό ταξίδι για μας με πολύ και σκληρή δουλειά και ανάπτυξη ανάμεσα στα μέλη. Ξοδέψαμε 4 χρόνια δουλεύοντας σε αυτό το νέο υλικό γιατί θέλαμε να είναι σίγουρο ότι τα τραγούδια ήταν της καλύτερης πιθανής ποιότητας. Ήμασταν τυχεροί να δουλέψουμε με τον Mark Kelson των The Eternal ξανά στη μίξη και ο πολυταλαντούχος Kris Verwimp σχεδίασε το εξώφυλλο μας. Στο τέλος, ήμασταν όλοι ευχαριστημένοι που δημιουργήσαμε το καλύτερο άλμπουμ που θα μπορούσαμε να έχουμε σαν μπάντα. Προσωπικά θα αγαπούσα να δω το δίσκο να κυκλοφορεί συντομότερα αν ήταν πιθανό, αλλά δε μπορείς να βιαστείς με ένα τόσο καλό πράγμα όπως αυτό.
EVIL INVADERS: Ο τελευταίος δίσκος που κυκλοφορήσαμε λέγεται “Shattering Reflection” και είναι αληθινά ο καλύτερος δίσκος που κυκλοφορήσαμε μέχρι τώρα. Υπάρχει μια ωραία ισορροπία στα τέμπο και τις δομές των κομματιών. Πραγματικά διευρύναμε τον ορίζοντα μας με αυτό το δίσκο, πηγαίνοντας από το πιο ακραίο κομμάτι που γράψαμε ποτέ (“Eternal Darkness”) σε ένα σχεδόν μπαλαντοειδούς στυλ τραγούδι σαν το “In Deepest Black” (ή αλλιώς το καλύτερο κομμάτι του 2022 και υποψήφιο για κομμάτι της δεκαετίας) και ένα θεατρικό ορχηστρικό σαν το “Aeon”. Είμαι πολύ περήφανος με ότι καταφέραμε σ’αυτό το δίσκο και σ’αυτό το σημείο δεν υπάρχει τίποτα που θα άλλαζα σ’αυτόν. Ανυπομονώ να γράψω περισσότερα τραγούδια σαν αυτά και ελπίζω να είμαστε ικανοί ακόμα και να το ξεπεράσουμε με τα επόμενα άλμπουμ φυσικά.
STEEL INFERNO: Η τελευταία μας επίσημη κυκλοφορία ήταν το «Evil Reign» του 2022. Όταν φύγαμε από το στούντιο είχαμε πολλά πράγματα που θέλαμε να αλλάξουμε αλλά είχαν ήδη σταλεί για printing. Ωστόσο νομίζω ότι κάπως έτσι είναι πάντα, θα πρέπει να είσαι ο χειρότερος κριτικός του εαυτού σου ως καλλιτέχνης. Όταν κυκλοφόρησε το άλμπουμ ξεχάσαμε όλα τα πράγματα που θέλαμε να αλλάξουν καθώς η υποδοχή ήταν εξαιρετικά καλή και θετική. Είμαστε απίστευτα ευγνώμονες για αυτό.
Το επόμενο άλμπουμ μάς οδηγεί σε μια ελαφρώς διαφορετική κατεύθυνση και γινόμαστε πιο σκληροί, αλλά πιστεύουμε ότι αυτό είναι φυσικό καθώς έχουμε τόσα πολλά στο δρόμο από την κυκλοφορία του ‘Evil Reign’.
Ποια είναι τα μελλοντικά σας σχέδια μετά την εμφάνισή σας στο UTH;
CIRITH UNGOL: Αν και έχουμε ανακοινώσει ότι θα σταματήσουνε να παίζουμε live, η μπάντα έχουμε ακόμα περισσότερη μουσική μέσα μας, και είναι η ελπίδα μου ότι θα κυκλοφορήσουμε περισσότερη μουσική ώστε να προσθέσουμε στην κληρονομιά αυτής της εικονικής μπάντας. Άγγελε, ανυπομονούμε να σε δούμε και όλους μας τους Έλληνες οπαδούς σύντομα.
Jack Starr's BURNING STARR: Τα σχέδια μας αφού παίξουμε στην Ελλάδα είναι να δουλέψουμε στην ηχογράφηση του νέου άλμπουμ και να οργανώσουμε περισσότερα σόου στην Ευρώπη και να συνεχίσουμε να παίζουμε και να ηχογραφούμε την καλύτερη μουσική που είμαστε ικανοί να δημιουργήσουμε.
COVEN JAPAN: Αφού παίξουμε στην Ελλάδα, θα παίξουμε με τους Crystal Throne (NWOTHM / Γαλλία) στο Παρίσι στις 11 Μαρτίου και την επόμενη μέρα θα παίξουμε με τους Iron Kingdom (NWOTHM / Καναδάς) και Glacier (Θρυλικό συγκρότημα των ΗΠΑ) στη Βιέννη στις 12/3. Όλες οι μπάντες είναι τόσο καλές και υπέροχες, οπότε είμαστε ενθουσιασμένοι που θα παίξουμε και μαζί τους.
Όσο για την 13η, τώρα ψάχνουμε ακόμα τον χώρο όπου μπορούμε να παίξουμε, και 14η, θα παίξουμε ξανά το Crystal Throne στο Metz.
Εκτιμούμε πραγματικά όλους αυτούς που μας βοήθησαν και μας υποστήριξαν σε αυτήν την περιοδεία. Ελπίζουμε η πρώτη μας ευρωπαϊκή περιοδεία να είναι επιτυχημένη! EVIL INVADERS: Έχουμε αρκετά φεστιβάλ σχεδιασμένα για το 2024 (Summer Breeze, Iron Fest Open Air, Headbangers Open Air, Mystic Festival, Rockmarathon, Brutal Assault, Leyendas del Rock, Running Free festival και λοιπά) και έχουμε ένα φοβερό support show με τους Vio-Lence στη Γερμανία τον Μάρτιο επίσης. Αλλά όπως είπα αυτή η χρονιά έχει κυρίως κλειστεί για σύνθεση κομματιών. Θα μπούμε στο στούντιο μόλις τα τραγούδια ολοκληρωθούν και ελπίζουμε να κυκλοφορήσουμε νέο υλικό το 2025. Αυτή τη στιγμή απλά ανυπομονούμε να ροκάρουμε με όλους εσάς παιδιά στην Αθήνα. Χαιρετίσματα!
STEEL INFERNO: Όπως ανέφερα και παραπάνω, έχουμε το νέο μας άλμπουμ "Rush of Power" που θα κυκλοφορήσει αργότερα το 2024. Εκτός από αυτό, έχουμε μια συναυλία στο θρυλικό The Abyss στο Γκέτεμποργκ της Σουηδίας σε λίγες εβδομάδες και μια μικρή περιοδεία στη Δανία την άνοιξη .

The 18th edition of UP THE HAMMERS FESTIVAL is just around the corner and RockOverdose took the opportunity to find out the latest news of the bands that will perform on the two main days of the festival that will take place on Friday 8th and Saturday 9th March at Gagarin 205.

RockOverdose: Hello and welcome to Rock Overdose pages. How do we find you at the moment and which are your latest actions as a band?
CIRITH UNGOL: This is Rob Garven the drummer from "Cirith Ungol". We have announced the final year of touring for our band which formed in 1971 in Ventura, California. We are looking forward to a full year of some pretty amazing shows all over the world, with stops in Europe, Australia, South America and the US!
Jack Starr's BURNING STARR: Hello Rockoverdose, we are doing good and rehearsing for Up the Hammers, also we are starting to prepare a new album which has the tentative title of " Chasing the Ghost"
COVEN JAPAN: Hello, Angelos, Rock Overdose. Thank you for the interview! We Coven Japan released our first full album on No Remorse Records in your country Greece.
The sales of the "Earthlings" are also great, the red vinyl already was sold out in the early days of the release day. Wonderful reviews and high scores for the album and so on, now we got lots of awesome responses from all over the world. so we are really happy.
These will be the power for creating our next second album. In this Feb, we could play with Mindless Sinner, Riot City and Japanese legendary bands. These were blast nights and awesome experiences.
And UP THE HAMMERS FESTIVAL will be the band's first live performance in Europe. Look forward to it! We are also very much looking forward to it.

QUARTZ: Hi , Malcom Cope here drummer from QUARTZ who hail from Birmingham in England (The Home of Heavy Metal) to answer your questions for your ROCK Overdose magazine readers. You find us currently preparing and rehearsing for Up The Hammers festival and sorting through new material
STYGIAN CROWN: Hello Rock Overdose! Thank you for the opportunity to speak with you. The band is very excited for the upcoming release of our second album, “Funeral for a King” and the festivals we will play to promote it. The response to the album has been overwhelmingly positive and we are very happy about that.
EVIL INVADERS: Right now we're working on the upcoming album. We're writing songs and making a new stage design. This year we're only playing some festivals, no big tours planned. Our main focus right now is creating our 4th studio album.
STEEL INFERNO: At the moment we are stoked to be playing at UP THE HAMMERS here in Greece. It has been a long time coming, but now we are here to bring the Copenhagen Speed Metal Attack! - We have been stuck in the studio the past month recording our next album ‘Rush of Power’ which will be out sometime in the late summer/early fall this year.
RockOverdose: In a world of countless bands, how did you decide to form yours, which were your inspiration and influences, and what do you believe you have to offer to the fans?
CIRITH UNGOL: We started as we wanted to play the heavy metal we grew up on, and have never wavered in that mission to this very day. The band broke up in 1991 because the heavy metal music being played at the time to us was not representative of what true heavy-metal was. We reformed in 2016 due to popular demand and have played many festivals and shows. We also released a live album "I'm Alive", a single "Witch's Game", and two very heavy albums “Forever Black” and our latest release “Dark Parade”! If you want to know what we have to offer our fans all you have to do is listen to these last two albums and you’ll get your answer.
Jack Starr's BURNING STARR: I formed Burning Starr after leaving Virgin Steele and Ned the bass player and I resumed playing together twenty years ago and we decided we wanted to continue so here we are with a great lineup of Rhino on drums, Alexx on vocals and Kevin Burnes on guitar I think that maybe we can define ourselves as a link to the great music of the eighties
Our inspiration as a band are the great groups of the seventies and eighties like Zeppelin, Purple the Mighty Sabs (Black Sabbath and for me as a guitarist Clapton Beck Page BB KIng
COVEN JAPAN: At first, we formed as a two-man metal project consisting of I (Taka) and guitarist Akihiro. We both like traditional metal and wanted to create original music.
After writing a song and uploading it to Bandcamp, we got offers from many labels to release it, and eventually ended up signing with Svart Records and releasing my first EP, 'The Advent'.
At this point, we were still a two-piece metal project, but since we got such a positive response with 'The Advent' from all over the world, we thought we should do live shows, so we gathered the members a few years ago and formed a five-piece band.
Now we are very happy that our music is now being heard all over the world and getting such a positive response. We believe that the best thing is that we write great music, release it, and perform passionately around the world.
Our inspiration and influences are NWOBHM and 80's heavy metal, but we also have various influences of 70's hard rock, music from the 90's onwards, not just metal, but also hardcore punk and pop.
If I have to name some bands, as for NWOBHM, Angel Witch, Satan, Diamond Head, Praying Mantis, Demon, Witchfinder General, Tank, Virtue, Bashful Alley, Persian Risk, etc. As the bands were active since mainly the 80's, Metallica, Mercyful Fate, Manowar, Riot, Trouble, Helloween, Accept, Celtic Frost, Sepultura, Kreator, Prasite(Swe), Bathory, and in Japan, Loudness, Anthem, X and so on.
Bands from before 80's, Judas Priest, Wishbone Ash, Thin Lizzy, Rainbow, Scorpions, UFO, Sebastian Hardie, Boston, etc.
In addition to metal bands, we also take inspiration from many hardcore punk bands, as well as more intense bands such as Bad Brains, Cro-mags, Minor Threat, Fugazi, Gorilla Biscuits, Youth of Today and Dag Nasty, Death Side etc.
In terms of attitude, our guitarist Aki and I are vegan straight edge, so we are influenced by those bands as well. From the 90's onwards, Ningen-Isu, Metalucifer, Carcass, Napalm Death, Cathedral, Earth Crisis and melodic hardcore punk bands like Leatherface, HDQ, Hooton 3 Car, Rise Against.
We also take a lot of inspiration from Japanese rock/pop music, including many anime songs. I said 'some'..but finally getting so many.. hahahaha yea we are music junkies.
QUARTZ: Quartz came together after we all had been in different bands. We had worked with each other, in different formats at various times over a period of time, so we made a conscious decision to make a major effort together to try and become a recognised act. Intially we went under the name of BANDY LEGS and then changed our name to QUARTZ in early 1977. We had/have a wide range of influences but we all like a more rocky and punchy style of music that we were keen to develop and play.
STYGIAN CROWN: Rhett Davis, a founding member of the doom/death band Morgion, came up with the idea for an epic doom band after the reunion of Morgion at Maryland Deathfest fell through in 2011. Rhett and his bandmates in the death/thrash band Gravehill had always wanted to establish a doom project in the vein of their heroes Candlemass and Solitude Aeturnus, so in 2015, the earliest seeds of Stygian Crown were planted. The band offers a unique take on the genre, bringing a massive doom/death sound with clean female vocals.
EVIL INVADERS: When I formed this band back in 2007 I didn't really think about all of that. The main goal was just to jam with friends, party and rock out on the music that we love. There was no plan behind it all. I just wanted to play classic heavy/ thrash metal stuff. Bands like Deep Purple, Exodus, Dio, Flotsam and Jetsam, Mercyful fate, Motörhead, Black Sabbath and Judas Priest have always been a big influence to me. As time went by, I discovered more bands that influenced me and as band members changed the band evolved. Today you can hear a wide spectrum of influences going from Classic rock to Death metal in our music. Through the years we created a style that's quite distinguishable from the other bands out there these days. If people ask me what style of music we play, these days I think it would be best described as “Extreme Heavy Metal”.
STEEL INFERNO: We didn’t choose the Speed Metal, the Speed Metal chose us - and we mean that. Nobody was playing the speed in Denmark back when we formed, so it was time for somebody to ignite the torch and make it happen. That happened to be us and as such Steel Inferno was born.
We are influenced by legends such as Savage Grace, Agent Steel and Helstar. In general everything that is speed but also has power.
While there might be a lot of bands on the scene and many of them are great. We give the fans speed, melody and an uncompromising will to deliver it with a manic attitude and I feel that is what makes us standout.
RockOverdose: What did you know about Up The Hammers as a festival and how do you feel that you will be a part of it? What should we wait from your performance?
CIRITH UNGOL: We were asked to headline "Up the Hammers" in 2017 and became close friends with Manolis the promoter. We really enjoyed playing this incredible festival, the passion of the Greek fan, and feel that it is appropriate that play our final show in Greece here!
Jack Starr's BURNING STARR: Up the Hammers has a good reputation for bringing quality bands and it seems to me that a lot of work goes into making a quality show, I am proud that Burning Starr will be a part of it this year. I think that our fans and even people who may have never heard of us will be seeing a band of pro's who play with a lot of power and conviction and take pride in putting on a show also this will be the first time that I have played some of the great Virgin Steele songs that I helped to write more than 40 years ago. So for me I am looking forward to this.
COVEN JAPAN: Of course, we've known Up The Hammers for some time as one of big festivals of traditional metal.
We get excited every year when we see the lineup and have wanted to perform in the future, so we are really happy and honoured to be able to perform this time.
QUARTZ: Quartz have been aware of Up The Hammers Festival for a long time. We were asked to play on the bill back in 2015 (I think?) but circumstances at the time meant we could not unfortunately. Fast forward nearly 10 years now and we are very excited and all looking forward to appearing at the festival and playing in Greece for the first time.
STYGIAN CROWN: The band, and perhaps the fans too, have been waiting a long time for us to make it to Greece. The pandemic sidelined everyone on the 2021 lineup, and we are just now able to make it there. We are grateful and humbled to have the chance to perform on the other side of the world to people who truly love our music. Saturday’s show is going to open with a crushing combination of old and new Stygian Crown material. We hope everyone makes it there early!
EVIL INVADERS: We've played there once in 2013 when our first EP had just been released and it kicked ass! Nothing but great memories from the festival.
I'm very excited to be coming back. We never really get the chance to play Greece when we're touring Europe due to it's placement on the map. That's a shame really. I'd love to play more in Greece.
We're gonna take this opportunity to rock the hell out of the place and give you all a burst of raw energy!
STEEL INFERNO: We were very much aware of Up The Hammers before we were invited here. It is a beacon of heavy metal and we are extremely proud to be here with so many fans and a crowd that is so deeply ingrained in the steel.
The crowd can expect a face-melting show of speed metal, with both old and newer songs. We will also play an entirely new song that we have not played before from our upcoming album ‘Rush of Power’.
RockOverdose: What is your opinion on your last material and how much satisfied are you from it? Would you change anything if you had the chance?
CIRITH UNGOL: Our last album “Dark Parade” I feel is the heaviest music we have created, and if I had to change one thing I would make it even heavier!!!
Jack Starr's BURNING STARR: Our last album Souls of the Innocent is a very well produced , well written and well performed album , I hope this does not sound self serving but I really would not change anything on that album .I think that all fans of power metal should buy it ,they will be surprised at how good it is .
COVEN JAPAN: As I mentioned before, actually we got wonderful responses all over the world. but to be honest, we are not satisfied.
Because if the band is satisfied with its own songs and performances, we think there is no progress and growth.
Regarding the next album, we will create new songs using our one and only characteristics more than this time.
QUARTZ: We are all very happy with our latest material and don’t wish to change anything substantially except the usual tweaks here and there during mastering etc.
STYGIAN CROWN: The new album has been an amazing journey for us with lots of hard work and growth among the band members. We spent four years working on this new material because we wanted to make sure the songs were the best quality possible. We were fortunate to work with Mark Kelson (The Eternal) again on mixing, and the ever-talented Kris Verwimp designed our cover art. In the end, we were all satisfied that we had created the best album we could have as a band. I personally would have loved to see the album released sooner if it would have been possible, but you can’t rush a good thing like this.
EVIL INVADERS: The last record we released is called “Shattering Reflection” and it truly is the best album we released until now. There's a nice balance in tempo's and song structures. We really extended our horizon with this record going from the most extreme song we ever wrote (Eternal Darkness) to an almost ballad-styled song like In Deepest Black and a theatrical instrumental like Aeon. I'm very proud of what we achieved on this record and at this point there's nothing I would change about it. I'm looking forward to write more songs like these and hope we'll be able to even top it with the future albums of course.
STEEL INFERNO: Our last official release was 2022’s ‘Evil Reign’. When we left the studio we had a lot of stuff that we wanted to change but it was already sent out to print. But I think that’s kinda how it always is, you should be your own worst critic as an artist. When the album was released we forgot about all the things wanted to change as the reception was extremely good and positive. Which we are incredibly grateful for.
The next album takes us in a slightly different direction becoming more gritty, but we think that comes natural as we have so much out on the road since the release of ‘Evil Reign’.
RockOverdose: What are your plans after you play in Greece? How soon could we wait for something new from you?
CIRITH UNGOL: Even though we have announced that we will stop playing live, the band still has more music in us, and it is my hope that we will release more music to add to this legacy of this iconic band. Angelos, we look forward to seeing you and all our Greek friends soon!
Jack Starr's BURNING STARR: Our plans after we play in Greece is to work on the recording of the new album and set up some more shows in Europe and continue to play and record the best music we are capable of making.
COVEN JAPAN: After playing in Greece, we will play with Crystal Throne(NWOTHM / France) to play in Paris on March 11th and the next day we will play with Iron Kingdom(NWOTHM / Canada) and Glacier (US Legendary band) in Vienna on 12th. They all bands are so cool and great, so we are excited to play also with them.
As for 13th, now we are still looking for the venue where we can play, and 14th, we will play Crystal Throne again in Metz.
We really appreciate all of them to help and support us for this tour. Hope our first European tour will be successful! After this tour, we will start making the next album, we hope it will be released early next year! So, look forward to it and Thank You for your support and Ευχαριστώ!
QUARTZ: Our future plans include a 50th Anniversary show in our own town of Birmingham in May and working on new material to record. As touched on earlier in the interview we have 12 new tracks all ready to release on as yet at a time and date to be decided BUT as they say keep watching this space for more details. This year will probably be our last of touring so catch us playing LIVE whilst you still can!

STYGIAN CROWN: Our next stop is Hell’s Heroes in Houston, Texas - less than two weeks after Up the Hammers. We will again meet our heroes Candlemass at this show (we played with them at Hammer of Doom in Germany) and for the first time we will get to meet Solitude Aeturnus for their reunion at this fest. We have more shows planned for the summer and are looking at other festival opportunities.
EVIL INVADERS: We've got a bunch of festivals planned for 2024 (Summerbreeze, Iron Fest Open Air, Headbangers Open Air, Mystic Festival, Rockmarathon, Brutal Assault, Leyendas del Rock, Running Free festival, etc.) and we've got a cool support show with Vio-lence in Germany in March as well. But as I said this year is mainly reserved for songwriting. We'll hit the studio as soon as the songs are finished and hope to release new material in 2025. We're just looking forward to rock out with you guys in Athens! Cheers!
