Tim "Ripper" Owens : Thank you..And thanks for having me…lets rock it!!!
Rock Overdose : As we know you are in the DIO tribute band, DIO DISCIPLES, would you like to tell as about this project, whose idea was to form this band, and about your parallel activities?
Tim "Ripper" Owens : Well we are celebrating Ronnie James Dio..Me and Toby on Vox along with Ronnie’s Band..This is a great thing and very emotional every night..and it is done the right way, the way Ronnie would want it done..His friends giving his music live to his friends and fans….This is a must see show..I also have a US tour with Yngwie coming up and a lot of SOLO stuff going on, maybe a few Hail tours here and there and also the new Charred walls of the damned cd is coming out soon
Rock Overdose : Why did you decide to form Beyond Fear instead of reviving Winter"s Bane?
Tim "Ripper" Owens : Well, to tell the truth labels didn’t want it, they wanted this..And to this day I still cant
get a label for WB..strange I also wanted to do something myself and Beyond Fear and my solo stuff does that
Rock Overdose : One of the elements of Beyond Fear is the raw energy it projects. Would you say that this is your cry for freedom? What made you perform like you did ?
Tim "Ripper" Owens : It is raw..because we are a band that lives close together and practices together and hung
out….I just love it, along with Play my game
Rock Overdose : The lyrics of the last song of the album "The Faith" have a very distinct meaning. Can you tell us
the story behind it ?
Tim "Ripper" Owens : Well we do have the faith, right..I am not leaving Metal and you fans aren’t as well..I might change it up a bit, sing old school..or heavy or melodic, but METAL.. I HAVE THE FAITH!!
Rock Overdose : Back in mid 90s the entire metal community turned their attention to 2 people who carried the burden of being the voices of the 2 biggest heavy metal bands. One of them sang in Wolfsbane and replaced Bruce Dickinson of Iron Maiden and the other sang in Winter"s Bane and replaced Rob Halford of Judas Priest. You and Blaze Bayley had the blessing/burden to keep the biggest heavy metal bands alive during a very difficult time.
Would you say your careers were in parallel paths during the 90s?
Tim "Ripper" Owens : Maybe, I think Balze was more known, I kinda came out of nowhere, so it might of made it a bit easier on my…But we did replace icons..LOL
Rock Overdose : Describe your time in Judas Priest in one word
Tim "Ripper" Owens : Awesome
Rock Overdose : How much does the movie Rockstar relate to reality?
Tim "Ripper" Owens : Opinions are divided between the reality movie projects and real life Not a lot..I mean
there are similarities, but is really goes in its own direction..Shame really, the truth about JP days was much better then what they put together
Rock Overdose : Having tasted what it feels to replace a singer-"trademark", you went on to become the frontman of Iced Earth, filling the gap Matt Barlow left behind. Would you say you"d put yourself in a very difficult position for a second time in life?
Tim "Ripper" Owens : No..Iced earth changes singers and band mates a lot…it was a great time but it was nothing
like priest..Main thing is I made some of the best cd’s they put out and I had a great time..
Rock Overdose : How would you characterize your relationship with Iced Earth having in mind you had to work with a very peculiar personality, that of John Schaffer?
Tim "Ripper" Owens : I had good times in IE, but it is over and I moved onto better and more exciting things
Rock Overdose : You"ve appeared in various tribute albums and have covered a lot of songs but you"ve adapted them in your own vocal abilities stating that first of all you are a FAN and then an artist. What is the recipe for transforming these songs and adapting them to suit your vocals instead of just copying the original ones?
Tim "Ripper" Owens : I just sing like Ripper Owens, I just walk in and belt it out..hahahhah I love to sing, this
is what I do! People say I do to much, I say I don’t do enough..LOL
Rock Overdose : You then worked with Yngwie Malmsteen, an artist widely known to work with the best singers of metal music. Tell us a few words about your collaboration in Perpertual Flame and Relentless
Tim "Ripper" Owens : Great, I really love working with Yngwie, what a talent, and I am looking forward to more in the future….Look for tour dates on Yngwie’s site
Rock Overdose : During the same period of your collaboration with Malmsteen, you release your first solo album Play the Game, an album which features a lot of well known artists. How did you manage to co-ordinate all these artists and create this album?
Tim "Ripper" Owens : Yea..Lucky to have so many friends..it was a great cd, I think the best I have done and so many great players on there..most of them lived in LA where is was recorded..I just got em down to Bob Kulicks studio
Rock Overdose : Lets talk about "To live again". What made you write its lyrics?
Tim "Ripper" Owens : Life my friend, Life….we all can do it
Rock Overdose : Charred Walls of the damned combines two worlds: One of Power Metal and the more extreme metal scene , since you"ve worked with Richard Christ and Steve DiGiorgio who are known for playing "extreme" metal. How did this collaboration came to be?
Tim "Ripper" Owens : Well Richard and myself are friends and he wanted to do something, I said hell yea..so we started to get it together..this is really Richards Baby..New cd out soon
Rock Overdose : Do you believe that if Chuck Schuldiner was still alive he"d been a member of Charred walls of the Damned ?
Tim "Ripper" Owens : hahahahhah Maybe him not me….I bet that’s the way it would be…
Rock Overdose : What"s on your playlist this period of your life? Name your favorite 5 albums of this year (2010 till present)?
Tim "Ripper" Owens : I have none..hahahahahah ok..haven’t heard it yet, I say Anthrax..hahaha
Rock Overdose : And now a cliche question: What is Heavy Metal to you ?
Tim "Ripper" Owens : Life, friends, good times, just life
Rock Overdose : Lastly, tell your Greek hardcore fans your future plans and if performing in Greece is part of
those plans!
Tim "Ripper" Owens : I hope I come soon..Seems that promoters all over the world bring me in for a small tour but Greece hasn’t done that yet..I WANT TO ROCK YOU ALL….

Tim "Ripper" Owens : Ευχαριστώ πολύ κι εγώ για τη πρόσκληση, είμαι πολύ καλά. Ας ροκάρουμε!
Rock Overdose : Όπως είναι γνωστό, αυτή τη περίοδο είσαι στους Dio Disciples (tribute συγκρότημα στον Ronnie James Dio). Θα ήθελες να μας πεις περισσότερα γι"αυτό το group, ποιανού ιδέα ήταν να δημιουργηθεί και κάποια άλλη δραστηριότητα σου;
Tim "Ripper" Owens : Απλά γιορτάζουμε τον Ronnie James Dio. Εγώ και ο Toby (Jepson) στα φωνητικά μαζί με το group του Ronnie...κάθε νύχτα είναι υπέροχη και πολύ συναισθηματική για μας. Και γίνεται με τον σωστό τρόπο, αυτόν που θα ήθελε ο Ronnie να γίνει. Οι φίλοι του να προσφέρουν τη μουσική του στους υπόλοιπους φίλους και fans του. Αυτό πιστεύω πως είναι ένα show που όλοι πρέπει να δουν. Μελλοντικά, σχεδιάζω ένα tour με τον Yngwie (Malmsteen) και αρκετή προσωπική δουλειά, ίσως κάποια lives με τους Hail! (supergroup) εδώ κι εκεί και στη συνέχεια το νέο cd των Charred Walls Of The Damned (supergroup) που θα κυκλοφορήσει σύντομα.
Rock Overdose : Γιατί αποφάσισες να να δημιουργήσεις τους Beyond Fear αντί να "αναβιώσεις" τους Winter"s Bane;
Tim "Ripper" Owens : Για να είμαι ειλικρινής, οι δισκογραφικές δεν το ήθελαν, ήθελαν να κάνω άλλο συγκρότημα. Και μέχρι σήμερα δεν έχω καταφέρει να βρω δισκογραφική για τους Winter"s Bane. Επιπλέον ήθελα να κάνω κάτι νέο και οι Beyond Fear ήταν αυτό που βόλεψε πέραν της προσωπικής μου δουλειάς.
Rock Overdose : Ένα βασικό στοιχείο των Beyond Fear είναι η "ωμή" ενέργεια που βγαίνει από τη μουσική τους. Θα έλεγες πως είναι μία κραυγή για ελευθερία; Τι σε κάνει να αποδίδεις έτσι;
Tim "Ripper" Owens : Είναι όντως "ωμή"... κι αυτό γιατί είμαστε μια μπάντα που ζούμε όλοι κοντά και κάνουμε πρόβες συνέχεια και βγαίνουμε όλοι μαζί έξω. Απλά αγαπώ αυτή τη φάση, μαζί με το "Play My Game" (πρώτο solo album του Tim "Ripper" Owens).
Rock Overdose : Οι στίχοι του τελευταίου κομματιού "The Faith" από το album "Beyond Fear" έχουν ένα ξεχωριστό νόημα. Μπορείς να μας πεις την ιστορία πίσω του;
Tim "Ripper" Owens : Όλοι μας έχουμε πίστη, εντάξει. Εγώ δεν σταματάω να πιστεύω στο metal όπως κι εσείς το ίδιο. Μπορεί να το παραλλάξω λίγο, να τραγουδήσω λίγο old-school, λίγο heavy ή μελωδικά αλλά πάντα θα είναι metal! Έχω μεγάλη πίστη σε αυτή!
Rock Overdose : Πίσω στα 90"s, όλη η metal κοινότητα είχε στρέψει το βλέμμα της σε 2 άτομα που κουβάλησαν το μεγάλο βάρος των φωνητικών 2 μεγάλων συγκροτημάτων. O ένας τραγουδούσε στους Wolfsbane και αντικατέστησε τον Bruce Dickinson στους Iron Maiden και ο άλλος τραγουδούσε στoυς Winter"s Bane και αντικατέστησε τον Rob Halford των Judas Priest. Εσύ και o Blaze Bayley είχατε αυτές τις μεγάλες ευθύνες. Θα έλεγες ότι οι καριέρες σας συμβάδιζαν σ"αυτή τη περίοδο των 90"s;
Tim "Ripper" Owens : Ίσως, ο Blaze ήταν πιο γνωστός τότε, εγώ βγήκα από το πουθενά. Γι"αυτό το λόγο ίσως εγώ να είχα πιο εύκολο δρόμο από αυτόν. Αλλά όντως αντικαταστήσαμε είδωλα, χεχεχέ!
Rock Overdose : Ο χρόνος σου στους Judas Priest με μία λέξη;
Tim "Ripper" Owens : Συναρπαστικός!
Rock Overdose : Η ταινία "Rockstar", πόσο ανταποκρίνεται στη πραγματικότητα; Υπάρχουν πολλές αντίθετες απόψεις.
Tim "Ripper" Owens : Δεν είναι και πολύ αντιπροσωπευτική, θα έλεγα. Υπάρχουν φυσικά ομοιότητες αλλά πάει προς τη δικιά της κατεύθυνση. Κρίμα όμως, η αλήθεια για τις μέρες με τους Judas Priest ήταν πολύ καλύτερη από αυτή της ταινίας.
Rock Overdose : Γνωρίζοντας τι θα πει να αντικαθιστάς έναν "τραγουδιστή - σύμβολο", έγινες ο frontman των Iced Earth αντικαθιστώντας το κενό του Matt Burlow. Ήρθες σε δύσκολη θέση για δεύτερη φορά στη ζωή σου;
Tim "Ripper" Owens : Όχι. Οι Iced Earth αλλάζουν τραγουδιστές και μέλη συνέχεια. Ήταν υπέροχα εκεί αλλά δεν ήταν τίποτα μπροστά στους Priest. Το κυριότερο ήταν ότι έβγαλα κάποια από τα καλύτερα cd τους και πέρασα υπέροχα μαζί τους.
Rock Overdose : Πως θα χαρακτήριζες τη σχέση σου με τους Iced Earth σκεπτόμενος ότι είχες να δουλέψεις με μία πολύ ιδιόρρυθμη προσωπικότητα, αυτή του Jon Schaffer;
Tim "Ripper" Owens : Είχα καλές στιγμές με τους Iced Earth αλλά τώρα όλα έχουν τελειώσει και προχώρησα σε καλύτερα και συναρπαστικότερα πράγματα.
Rock Overdose : Έχεις κάνει εμφανίσεις σε tribute albums και έχεις κάνει cover πολλά άλλα τραγούδια αλλά τα προσάρμοσες στη δικιά σου φωνή λέγοντας πως πρώτα είσαι fan και μετά καλλιτέχνης. Ποια είναι η συνταγή του να φτιάχνεις κάτι στη δική σου φωνή και όχι να το αντιγράψεις;
Tim "Ripper" Owens : Εγώ τραγουδώ σαν τον "Ripper" Owens, μπαίνω μέσα και "τον βγάζω έξω"... χαχαχαχά μου αρέσει να τραγουδάω, κι αυτό κάνω. Ο κόσμος λέει ότι τραγουδάω υπερβολικά, εγώ λέω πως δεν κάνω αρκετά πράγματα.
Rock Overdose : Στη συνέχεια λοιπόν δούλεψες με τον Yngwie Malmsteen, έναν καλλιτέχνη ευρύτατα γνωστό για τη συνεργασία του με τους καλύτερους τραγουδιστές της metal. Πες μας για τη συνεργασία σου μ"αυτόν στα "Perpetual Flame" και "Relentless".
Tim "Ripper" Owens : Υπέροχες στιγμές, πραγματικά απόλαυσα τις ηχογραφήσεις τότε και απολαμβάνω μέχρι τώρα να δουλεύω με τον Yngwie, ένα φοβερό ταλέντο και εννοείται πως θα κάνουμε δουλειές μαζί και στο μέλλον. Τσεκάρετε για ημερομηνίες tour στο site του.
Rock Overdose : Κι ενώ λοιπόν ήσουνα σε συνεργασία με τον Malmsteen, κυκλοφόρησες το πρώτο προσωπικό σου album με τίτλο "Play My Game" που είχε συμμετοχές από πολύ γνωστούς καλλιτέχνες. Πως κατάφερες να συντονίσεις τόσα πράγματα και να κάνεις ένα τόσο καλό album;
Tim "Ripper" Owens : Ναι όντως αλλά είμαι και τυχερός που έχω τόσους καλούς φίλους. Είναι ένα υπέροχο cd, νομίζω το καλύτερο που έχω κάνει μέχρι τώρα και εκεί υπάρχουν όλοι αυτοί οι masters του rock και του metal. Οι πιο πολλοί ζούσαν τότε στο Los Angeles, εκεί όπου ηχογράφησα το album. Τους γνώρισα όλους στο Bob Kulicks Studio και τα υπόλοιπα είναι γνωστά.
Rock Overdose : "Το Live Again". Ένα υπέροχο κομμάτι από το "Play My Game". Τι σε έκανε να γράψεις τους στίχους του;
Tim "Ripper" Owens : Η ζωή φίλε μου, η ζωή... όλοι μπορούμε να κάνουμε κάτι τέτοιο.
Rock Overdose : Οι Charred Walls Of The Damned συνδυάζουν δύο κόσμους : Power Metal και Extreme Metal αφού έχεις δουλέψει μαζί με τους Richard Christy και τον Steve DiGiorgio, γνωστοί για τη παρουσία τους στην "extreme" σκηνή.
Πως έγινε αυτή η συνεργασία;
Tim "Ripper" Owens : Ο Richard κι εγώ είμαστε πολύ καλοί φίλοι και ήθελε να κάνουμε κάτι μαζί, του απάντησα "Hell Yeah!". Έτσι αρχίσαμε αυτό το project και τα πάμε καλά. Μπορώ να το αποκαλέσω σαν "Ο διάδοχος του Richard". Νέο cd σύντομα κοντά σας.
Rock Overdose : Πιστεύεις ότι αν ζούσε ο Chuck Schuldiner θα ήταν κι αυτός μέλος των Charred Walls Of The Damned;
Tim "Ripper" Owens : Χαχαχαχά, ίσως αυτός ναι αλλά όχι εγώ. Λογικά έτσι θα ήτανε.
Rock Overdose : Τι ακούς στο playlist σου αυτή τη περίοδο; Κάποιο album που σου άρεσε;
Tim "Ripper" Owens : Δεν έχω κάποιο αγαπημένο καινούριο album προς το παρόν, θα πω χωρίς να έχω το ακούσει, των Anthrax... χαχαχαχά!
Rock Overdose : Και τώρα μια πιο "κλισέ" ερώτηση : Τι σημαίνει Heavy Metal για σένα;
Tim "Ripper" Owens : Ζωή, φίλοι, καλές στιγμές. Απλά ο ορισμός της ζωής.
Rock Overdose : Κλείνοντας, τα μελλοντικά σου σχέδια φτάνουν στην Ελλάδα και στους Έλληνες fans σου;
Tim "Ripper" Owens : Εύχομαι να έρθω πολύ σύντομα. Φαίνεται πως όλοι οι promoters θέλουν να επισκεφτώ τις χώρες τους αλλά η Ελλάδα δεν έχει κάνει κάτι τέτοιο μέχρι τώρα. Θέλω πραγματικά όμως να ροκάρω μαζί σας!
