- Πείτε μου καταρχήν λίγα λόγια για εσάς. Ποιοι είστε και πότε ξεκινήσατε;
(Nemetor & Kerveros):
Γεια χαρά Γιάννη, ξεκινήσαμε το συγκρότημα οι δυο μας σαν ένα project για να βγάζουμε το άχτι μας να παίζεται η αγαπημένη μας μουσική live, μιας και τότε (2008) δεν υπήρχε καμία διάδοσή του Viking/Folk Death Metal στην Ελλάδα. Αρχίσαμε να πειραματιζόμαστε με κάποια τραγούδια και σιγά σιγά προσελκύσαμε δυο κιθαρίστες (Aeon & Erevos) που μοιράζονται το ίδιο μουσικό πάθος με εμάς και έναν από τους λίγους drummers (Kratos) που μπορούν να ανταπεξέλθουν στις απαιτήσεις της μουσικής μας. Με τον καιρό προσθέσαμε και πολλές ξεχωριστές επιρροές αλλά και ολότελα νέα στοιχεία στον ήχο μας, με αποτέλεσμα να δημιουργήσουμε και να συνεχίσουμε κάτι εντελώς καινούργιο, ειδικά για τα ελληνικά δεδομένα.
- Κυκλοφορήσατε πρόσφατα ένα demo και ένα videoclip. Πείτε μου λίγα πράγματα σχετικά με αυτό.
Το Demo/EP μας Mirror of Darkness περιέχει τα τρία πρώτα τραγούδια που γράψαμε, και παρόλο που σε σχέση με τα καινούργια μας κομμάτια υστερούν αρκετά σε πρωτοτυπία και πολυπλοκότητα είναι ένα καλό δείγμα του τι παίζουμε και τι ακολουθεί! To opening track 'Winter' πραγματεύεται το αιώνιο φιλοσοφικό ερώτημα της ύπαρξης ζωής χωρίς θάνατο. Το Dark Mirror αντιπροσωπεύει τη σκοτεινή πλευρά της επιφάνειας της θάλασσας όπως φαίνεται από τη βυθισμένη Ατλαντίδα, ενώ το Ravenhell είναι η αρχή ενός χιουμοριστικά ακραίου έπους για την επερχόμενη καταστροφή του κόσμου από τα κοράκια.
Ως εκ τούτου, το videoclip του Ravenhell είναι μια χιουμοριστική αναπαράσταση του θέματος και των γεγονότων του τραγουδιού. Γυρίστηκε από εμάς με μια απλή ψηφιακή κάμερα και παρόλα τα εμπόδια της Μητέρας Φύσης (χόρτα, τσουκνίδες και κάτι μυρμήγκια που αποσπούσαν τον Aeon) περάσαμε πολύ καλά γυρίζοντάς το! Bless you ants... Blants.
Παρεπιπτόντως, σε ένα στιγμιότυπο του βίντεο κάτι δεν είναι όπως θα έπρεπε να είναι.

- Πείτε μου ποιες είναι οι επιρροές σας και τι θέλετε να προβάλετε με τη μουσική σας;
Αρχικά οι επιρροές μας ήταν κυρίως οι Ensiferum, Wintersun και Amon Amarth, αλλά σταδιακά η life-long πόρωσή μας με Blind Guardian κατέλαβε το μουσικό μας ειρμό, με αποτέλεσμα να ξεφύγουμε από την όλη 'Nordic epic metal' σκηνή και να δημιουργήσουμε κάτι αποκλειστικά δικό μας. Όποιος έχει έρθει σε κάποια από τις συναυλίες μας, όπου παίζουμε μερικά από τα κομμάτια του μελλοντικού μας δίσκου, θα έχει αντιληφθεί και στοιχεία από μοντέρνο metal (όπως breakdowns και πιο 'αμερικάνικοι' ρυθμοί, πάντα στο ύφος μας) ενώ έχουμε ενσωματώσει και στοιχεία από jazz-blues, όπως θα φανεί στο επερχόμενο single μας Embracing the Waves.
Με τη δουλειά μας θέλουμε πρωτίστως να προβάλλουμε τη δική μας αγάπη για επική, μαγευτική μουσική, μεταφέροντας ένα ευρύτατο φάσμα συναισθημάτων. Μέσω των τραγουδιών μας επαναφέρουμε στη ζωή αρχαιοελληνικούς (και μη) μύθους και ιστορίες, όχι περιγράφοντας τους αλλά αναπαριστώντας τους με σκέψεις και διαλόγους των ηρώων. Χαρακτηριστικό παράδειγμα είναι ένα τραγούδι που έχουμε γράψει για τη μάχη των Θερμοπυλών, με το οποίο εισαγάγουμε κάτι καινούργιο στη metal, όπου το τραγούδι εξελίσσεται θεατρικά με βάση τα γεγονότα, χωρίς συγκεκριμένα μέρη και δομή.
- Σχεδιάζετε να εμφανιστείτε σε κάποιο live σύντομα; Έχετε εμφανιστεί κάπου στο παρελθόν;
Έχουμε εμφανιστεί σε αρκετά από τα γνωστά μαγαζιά της Αθήνας που ασχολούνται με metal (όπως το ΑΝ club). Είμαστε σε διαπραγματεύσεις για μια σειρά από Live τώρα την Άνοιξη, ξεκινώντας με ένα show στο Jasmin Rock Club στις 10 Μαρτίου και τελειώνοντας με το ετήσιο Ravenfeast, ένα μικρό metal fest προς τιμήν του Θεού-Κοράκι, που οργανώσαμε πρώτη φορά πέρυσι.
- Που ηχογραφείτε και που στηρίζεται η παραγωγή σας;
Λόγω του ότι η παραγωγή στο EP μας δεν ήταν ικανοποιητική, με βάση τα standards που έχουμε θέσει για τον ήχο μας, αποφασίσαμε να συνεργαστούμε με το Fragile Studio (γνωστοί και καταξιωμένοι στην ελληνική metal σκηνή) για την ηχογράφηση αρχικά του single και στη συνέχεια του πρώτου μας full-length, με το οποίο μέχρι στιγμής είμαστε απόλυτα ευχαριστημένοι.
- Τι πιστεύετε οτι συμβαίνει στην Ελληνική σκηνή γενικότερα; Αντιλαμβάνεστε κάποια ανάπτυξη στο χώρο της metal;
Γενικότερα η ελληνική σκηνή βρίσκεται πολύ πίσω σε σχέση με τα παγκόσμια μουσικά τεκτενόμενα. Νέα συγκροτήματα παίζουν μουσικές που έξω έχουν ήδη ξεπεραστεί απλά επειδή τις άκουγαν όσο μεγάλωναν, ενώ παλιότερα συγκροτήματα προσκολλώνται σε έτοιμες συνταγές και δεν εξελίσσονται καθόλου.
Το κύριο πρόβλημα όμως βρίσκεται στα μαγαζία, που ενδιαφέρονται για 100-200 παραπάνω ευρώ κάθε βράδυ αντί να επενδύσουν σε μια βάση πάνω στην οποία η ελληνική σκηνή μπορεί να ανθίσει και να αποφέρει μεγαλύτερα κέρδη. Πλέον είναι πολύ πιο εύκολο για μια μπάντα που παίζει tribute στους Metallica να κλείσει ένα μαγαζί, παρά κάποια που έχει να προσφέρει νέο υλικό. Παράλληλα, οι δισκογραφικές κλείνουν τις πόρτες σε νέους καλλιτέχνες και ξεζουμίζουν τις ίδιες και τις ίδιες μπάντες, αναζητώντας επίσης το άμεσο και όχι το μακροπρόθεσμο κέρδος.
- Έχετε συνεργαστεί η σκοπεύετε να το κάνετε με κάποια άλλη Ελληνική μπάντα που κινείται στο χώρο έστω και σαν ανταλλαγή απόψεων η κοινής παρουσίας στη σκηνή;
Έχουμε συνεργαστεί και παίξει μαζί με αρκετές μπάντες της ελληνικής underground σκηνής (Allen's Hand, Still Falling κ.α.), και είμαστε ανοιχτοί σε πρότασεις για νέες συνεργασίες. Άλλωστε η μουσική μας βασίζεται στην ανταλλαγή απόψεων και στην ανάμιξη επιρροών. Γενικά αυτήν την περίοδο αναζητούμε συγκροτήματα από όλη την Ελλάδα για τη διοργάνωση tour. Επίσης θα μας ενδιέφερε και να ακολουθήσουμε ένα καταξιωμένο act στο tour του.
- Εκπλήσσει ο συνδιασμός Ελληνικών και Αγγλικών φωνητικών που χρησιμοποιείτε στο demo. Πως το επιλέξατε και τι θέλετε να μεταδώσετε;
Σε ολόκληρο το EP μόνο σε ένα σημείο του Ravenhell υπάρχουν ελληνικά λόγια, που κύριο σκοπό έχουν τη χιουμοριστική προσέγγιση για τους Έλληνες και την cult ατμόσφαιρα για τους ξένους.
Σε μετέπειτα τραγούδια μας έχουμε ενσωματώσει Αρχαία Ελληνικά, για να μεταφέρουμε το κλίμα και τη θεματολογία της εποχής.
- Σαν πρωτοεμφανιζόμενη μπάντα έχετε δημιουργήσει πολύ καλές εντυπώσεις. Να αναμένουμε κάποια συνέχεια στο άμεσο μέλλον;
Όπως έχουμε ήδη αναφέρει, σύντομα θα είναι διαθέσιμο το single μας Embracing the Waves, ενώ συνεχίζουμε τις ηχογραφήσεις για το full-length album μας.
Παράλληλα θα διοργανώσουμε όσο πιο πολλές ζωντανές εμφανίσεις γίνεται, και αναζητούμε την υποστήριξη του κόσμου, ώστε να μπορέσουμε να προσφέρουμε ένα υπέροχο album.
Γνωρίζουμε ότι ο δρόμος είναι μακρύς, αλλά πιστεύουμε ότι θα καταφέρουμε να πραγματοποιήσουμε τους στόχους μας κάνοντας αυτό που μας αρέσει περισσότερο, παίζοντας μουσική για εσάς όπως εμείς θα θέλαμε να είναι.

- Please tell me now some things about you, who are you, when did you start your career...
(Nemetor & Kerveros):
Hail Yianni, the band started out as a project so the two of us could actually listen to our favourite music being played live, seeing as at the time (2008) Viking/Folk Death Metal was not at all known around Greece. We started experimenting with a couple of songs and soon attracted two guitarists (Aeon and Erevos) who share our passion of music and one of the few drummers in Greece (Kratos) who can live up to the demands of our musical creation. In time we added many different influences and some totally new elements, thus creating and continuing something new, especially as far as Greece is concerned.
- Recently, you brought out a demo and produced a videoclip. please tell us about this...
Our demo/EP Mirror of Darkness contains the first three songs we ever composed and, although compared to our newer songs they are lacking both in originality and in complexity, they are a good sample of what we play and what is to come. The opening track Winter deals with the eternal philosophical question of the existence of life without death. The Dark Mirror represents the dark side of the surface of the sea as that is seen from the sunken Atlantis, whilst Ravenhell is the beginning of a humourously extreme epic tale of the impending destruction of the world by Ravens.
As such, the Ravenhell videoclip is a humourous representation of the themes and events in the song. It was shot by us with a simple digital camera and despite the obstacles set forth by Mother Nature (grass, weeds and some ants that kept distracting Aeon) we had a great time shooting it. Bless you ants... Blants.

- Now I have to ask you what were your influences, was there any mentors, what do you wish to stress with your music? Is there something you want to make especially known to all?
At first our influences were mainly Ensiferum, Wintersun and Amon Amarth, but gradually our life-long fascination with Blind Guardian took over our creative flow, resulting in us breaking away from the whole 'Nordic epic metal' scene and creating something exclusively our own. Anyone who has come to one of our shows, where we play some tracks from our forthcoming album, will have noticed modern metal elements (breakdowns, more ‘american style’ rhythms, always within the tone of the band). We have also incorporated jazz-blues elements, as it is shown in our soon upcoming single Embracing the Waves.
Through our work we firstly wish to project our love for epic, majestic music, while transfering a vast spectrum of emotion. Through our songs we resurrect Ancient Greek (and other) myths and stories, not by description but by reprisal through the thoughts and dialogues of the heroes. A fitting example is that of a song we have composed about the battle of Thermopylae, with which we are introducing something completely new in metal music, namely that the song progresses theatrically based on the events of the tale, without any specific parts or structure.
- Do you plan to stage live performances soon? Have you done so anywhere in the past?
We have played a number of the known stages around Athens (like AN club). We are currently negotiating a series of live shows within the spring, starting with one at Jasmin Rock Club at March 10 and ending with the annual Ravenfeast, a small metal fest in honour of the Ravengod, which was held for the first time last year.
- Where is the studio where you make your recordings? Is there a sponsor backing your activities?
As the production in our EP was not satisfactory, based on the standards we have set for our sound, we decided to collaborate with Fragile Studios (known and accomplished in the Greek music scene) for the recording initially of our single, and later on of our first full-length album. So far we are very pleased.
- Now please tell us, what do you think of the Greek music scene in general, do you feel that something's going on or sense any developments?
Generally the Greek music scene is miles behind global music events. New bands play music that has been long outdated simply because they grew up listening to it, while older bands are attached to fixed recipes and fail to evolve whatsoever.
The main problem, however, lies with the venues, which are interesting in making a couple hundred easy Euros more each night, instead of investing on a basis on which the Greek scene can thrive and profit on even more in the future. It is now easier for a Metallica tribute band to book a show than a band presenting their own material. Meanwhile, record labels are shoving off new artists and sucking the blood dry off of the same old bands and acts, also going for the small immediate profit instead of a greater longterm one.
- Have you partnered with any Greek group or plan to do so, sharing music or just staging together?
We have cooperated and played with a number of bands of the Greek underground scene (Allen's Hand, Still Falling and more) and are open to new partnerships. Besides, our music is based on the exchange of ideas and the mixture of influences. At this time we are seeking other bands from Greece in order to organize a tour. We would also be interested in supporting an accomplished act in their tour.
- The combination of Greek and English used in your demo is a pleasant surprise, how did you come to choose it and what was the message, if any, you want to share?
In the entire EP only in one part of Ravenhell are there Greek vocals, mainly intended as a humourous approach for the Greek audience and for creating a cult atmosphere for the foreign listeners. In newer songs we have added Ancient Greek, in order to capture the feel and theme of the time.
- Despite being a relatively new group, you have already impressed. Can we soon expect something from you?
As we have already mentioned, we will soon release our single Embracing the Waves, while we are continuing the recordings for our full-length. Meanwhile we will set up as many live shows as possible, where we expect the support of the metal community, in order for us to present you with an album as awesome as possible. We are aware of the hardships ahead, but our metal resolve will not let us rest until we succeed in doing what we love most, playing music for you straight from our souls.
