Comeback Kid is a Canadian punk rock band from Winnipeg, Manitoba formed in 2000. Their name comes from a headline in a newspaper about hockey player Mario Lemieux coming back to the National Hockey League. The band will be visiting Greece for two live shows in both Athens and Thessaloniki on the 18th and 19th of January 2018!
Rock Overdose and Elpida Vounzoulaki (Hope Vnz) had the chance to catch up with the band’s member Andrew Neufeld – lead vocals, guitars just a few days before their shows.
Rock Overdose: Hello guys and welcome to Rock Overdose! Let’s start from your latest album, “Outsider” which has been released quite recently and has already received fantastic critics! Would you like to tell us a few words about the inspiration behind the songs and everything that contributed in the creation of this album?
Andrew: Yeah man, this was a really inspiring record to make. 3 of us in the band in particular brought some different kinds of songs to the table. You know, we would start the writing with some really fast in your face thrash type riffs, and in response to that... when I would sometimes gravitate to also bringing those elements to the table as well I would instead try to write songs that were totally different in tempo, and feel.
I like an album to move in emotion and feel. I want to hear it come up and down and get hard but also bring it to a more melodic place. That is my goal with Comeback Kid records. To keep the "Comeback Kid" sound and keep it in the punk/ hardcore genre but keep it interesting enough to keep it moving and create a journey through the album.
Rock Overdose: You are currently on a tour, visiting several places all over Europe. Would you like to share with us any experiences you have had so far? What makes this tour so special?
Andrew: We are on a short break over christmas right now in between some touring. The last tour in Europe was more Germany, UK etc. but in the new year I wanted to do a tour that was only focused on the south and eastern regions in Europe. We are starting in Greece and ending in Portugal. So I plan to come out to Greece early and stay late after in Portugal and do a little travelling on my own!
Highlights of the last tour was playing Koko in London to a sold out crowd, Playing the legendary Gibus in Paris, Getting Champaign sprayed all over us in Prague or going to the baths in Budapest Hungary which made for a great day.
Rock Overdose: We expect to see you live both in Athens in Thessaloniki in January 2018. However, this is not the first time for you to visit Greece for a show. What is it so special about visiting Greece once again?
Andrew: I know the crowds in Greece go wild style. I've spent some time there on and off tour ( actually had my iPhone stolen last time I was there while eating breakfast outside ) so I'll keep a close eye on my stuff this time around! I know the Athens crowd is great and the show will definitely be off the hook. Just wanna go crazy you feel me?
Rock Overdose: What are your thoughts on creativity and inspiration? Do you believe that it is something you are born with or something you cultivate throughout your life, and why?
Andrew: I know that I was born to play music that is for sure. My whole family is involved in music and play instruments so for me personally it was an undeniable option and I NEED to be doing music in my life. Creativity comes from everywhere. I don't think it comes from inside me but I think I can access it sometimes from somewhere out in the universe. I also get writer's block often too so lets be real.
Rock Overdose: How do you feel about your constantly evolving fanbase and about the fact that more and more people relate to your music and lyrics? Is that what you aimed from the very first time you started as a band?
Andrew: I always wanted to share music we write with people who are willing to hear it. I don't want to keep it to myself. It would be no fun if it stayed a secret forever.
Rock Overdose: Do you believe that technology and the social media have a major influence on people and what they think of a band? Do you use the social media a lot as well, and why?
Andrew: Social media is something we HAVE to use to promote our band and our releases / shows etc. I don't say I love it but I do find myself sometimes too attached to being online, and I think that's annoying sometimes.
Rock Overdose: How do you usually spend your time when not in the studio or touring?
Andrew: Chillin with friends, going to other shows as a fan, working out, spending time with family. Really, we are home sporadically so home is about catching up with the people you love.
