Οι Diabulus in Musica είναι μία Ισπανική Gothic/Symphonic female fronted metal μπάντα. Τον Μάιο του 2010 κυκλοφόρησαν το εξαιρετικό ντεμπούτο τους με τίτλο "Secrets" το οποίο μπορεί να συγκριθεί μόνο με αυτά των After Forever (Prison of Desire) και των Epica (The Phantom Agony). Πολλά μεγάλα πράγματα αναμένονται από αυτή τη μπάντα στο μέλλον καθώς υπόσχονται φρέσκο αέρα στον κορεσμένο χώρο της Gothic σκηνής.

-First of all, thank you for doing this interview. Can you tell us a bit about the history of the band? How did you get together?
Zuberoa Aznárez: Diabulus in Musica was founded in 2006. All the members knew each other from the local metal scene of Pamplona, and most of us were friends before creating Diabulus in Musica. Gorka Elso (keyboard player/grunter) played in two well-known power metal bands in the city. I started to sing in one of them, and Adrián Vallejo, guitar player/screamer) started to play the guitar in the other. Both bands disappeared, so Gorka and I decided to invite Adrián to join us in the new project we were about to start: Diabulus in Musica. Xabi Jareño (drummer) joined us while recording "Secrets". He was Adriánʼs friend; they also played together in a cover band and Alex Sanz (bass guitar player and Diabulus in Musicaʼs newest member) also knew Adrián because they had worked together in another rock project. We had another drummer and bass player before, but they had to leave the band due to personal reasons.
- Diabulus in Musica means….the Devil in Music right? What does it mean for you?
ZA: Diabulus in Musica is a Latin medieval word, which means ʽthe devil in music.ʼ It was like that as they called the triton or the interval of the augmented fourth. The medieval ear was used to hearing perfect fourths and perfect fifths. The augmented fourth, being halfway between these two most common intervals, was about the worst discord imaginable. Thatʼs why they thought that the devil was inside the triton. It was perfect for us not only because of the meaning it has to us, but also because it sounds a bit dark, as our music sometimes. We like this ʽdark romantic aestheticʼ, so we thought Diabulus in Musica was the name that fit us the best.
- How would you describe your music to someone who has never heard of you?
Gorka Elso: It"s a mixture of different musical styles, from classical to metal, but everything combined to achieve songs full of dynamism.
Adrián Vallejo: Our music takes the passion of classical music but from the point of view of a metal band.
-So, Secrets is your debut album and itʼs obvious that you put a lot of hard work in it. How was the writing process of the album? (Did you all sit down in a room and started writing or was it different ideas that was later put together?)
AV: Secrets was written by Zube, Gorka and me. Xabi joined the band during the recording and Alex a bit after. For the new upcoming album we did the same as in "Secrets", but this time all of us contributed to the writing. Basically, one writes one song completely and then the others add their point of view and feelings. But, before writing, we organize many meetings to know what exactly we want to do, and how should be the songs. Maybe this is the most important thing.
- And what can you tell us about the recording process? Working with Sascha Paeth and Ad Sluijter must be on hell of experience
AV: Yes, they are very professional people. Most of the job is done via Internet but, anyway, we learnt a lot.
GE: In "Secrets" we were not in a hurry and we spent the time we needed to have the perfect takes sounding and playing wise. In this process Sascha and Ad were not still involved. We started working with Ad in the mixing process, we couldn"t find the sound we wanted and he helped us a lot. He finally did the whole mix, I think he did a great job. He gave us some tricks for future recordings that, along with our experience, we used for the new album.
-So, on to the fresh part. You are currently preparing your second album, what details can you tell us about it? (Are you moving into a different direction? Any surprises?)
GE: I think it"s a step forward in the maturation of DiM. The songs are stronger and better composed, we were able to mix a harder sound with more bombastic effects. It"s definitely an impressive album.
AV: Oh, yes! This is going to be an amazing album, I can tell that itʼs going to be a conceptual album, with a heavier sound and with very special guests. One thing we have improved is that we found the way to go to the limit with emotions. At the moment everything is recorded and it"s being mixed by Jacob Hansen.
- And you also releasing a video clip for this album, right?
AV: Yes, we recorded a clip with the new single. Itʼs going to be release in the MFVF DVD.
GE: We can also say that the video was recorded in very beautiful and unique sceneries of where we live, you will see on the video 😉
-This year, like last year, you are playing the prestigious Metal Female Voices Fest in Belgium, the best place for female metal bands and their fans. How was that experience?
Xabi Jareño: The experience was incredible. All of us enjoyed this festival a lot. As you said, this is the best festival in our style, so it was really amazing.
GE: Since we started with DiM it was one of our goals and we achieve it... sometimes dreams become true!
-Last year at MFVF you had lots of surprises for the fans, a small choir for the epic parts and duets with Maite Itoiz, both on your songs and on an opera aria. Are there more surprises for this year that you can reveal to us?
XJ: Mmm...we can only say that this year will be at least as interesting as last year. We have prepared a special show with some collaborations and "other things", something really special that is not seen usually on a metal concert. We are pretty sure that it will be hard to forget this show.
- That reminds me, your live show at MFVF8 is also featured in the MFVF DVD released this year. What songs did you pick for the dvd? 😛
GE: Haha, I read on the Social Networks people asking for some particular song. Well, obviously we had to make a choice (we"d like to put all the songs, haha) and the two songs selected are... Evolution"s Whim and Nocturnal Flowers. I think they represent very well how we felt on the stage and how was the communication with the audience (they were incredible, btw).
-Back to Secrets, another point that is very interesting is your song themes, very diverse from angel-demon lyrics to more humane emotions and situations. What is your inspiration for lyrics?
ZA: Iʼm inspired by so many things! Specially Nature and Freedom. There are different aspects of my mind reflected in the lyrics, sometimes nothing to do one with the other, as I have a messy brain haha I would say that the topics of the lyrics are personal worries, fears or feelings in general, there are some mythological themes as well… but what I like when writing is that everyone can interpret the lyrics as they want, thatʼs the magic of the metaphors J
-How did people and media react to your debut?
GE: We were nominated as best debut band of 2010, best debut album and best revelation band (at MFVF) in many different websites and fanzines. I think the reaction was good, wasn"t it?
-Definitely a lot positive hehe, Do you have any tour plans for when the new album is released?
GE: Yes, we have several options to go on tour, we are working hard to achieve this, but until is not confirmed we prefer not to give more details, hehe. Nowadays it"s quite difficult for a newcomer band; you have to promote each gig and earn enough money to pay all the costs, so we are working hard to try to optimize the tour so it can take place in the best conditions possible.
-To close up, do you have any message for all your fans and fan clubs out there?
DiM: We would like to thank everybody for your interest. We hope to see all of you somewhere and that you enjoy our music and our gigs. Thank s for your support, we really appreciate it!

- Πρώτα από όλα, ευχαριστώ που μας δίνετε αυτή τη συνέντευξη. Μπορείτε να μας πείτε μερικά λόγια για την ιστορία του συγκροτήματος; Πως βρεθήκατε όλοι μαζί;
Zuberoa Aznárez: Οι Diabulus in Musica σχηματίστηκαν το 2006. Όλα τα μέλη γνωρίζονταν μεταξύ τους από την τοπική metal σκηνή της Pamplona, και οι περισσότεροι ήμασταν φίλοι πριν σχηματίσουμε τους Diabulus in Musica. Ο Gorka Elso (keyboard player/grunter) έπαιζε σε δύο γνωστές power metal μπάντες της πόλης. Εγώ ξεκίνησα να τραγουδώ στην μία από αυτές και ο Adrián Vallejo (guitar player/screamer) έπαιζε κιθάρα στην άλλη. Έπαιζαν επίσης μαζί σε μία μπάντα διασκευών και ο Alex Sanz (bass guitar player και το νεότερο μέλος των Diabulus in Musica) γνωστός και ως Adrián γιατί είχαν δουλέψει μαζί σε ένα άλλο rock project. Είχαμε άλλον drummer και μπασίστα πριν, αλλά έπρεπε να φύγουν για προσωπικούς λόγους.
- Diabulus in Musica σημαίνει…. ο Διάολος στην μουσική, σωστά; Τι σημαίνει αυτό για εσάς;
ZA: Diabulus in Musica είναι μία λατινική μεσαιωνική λέξη, που σημαίνει "ο Διάολος στην Μουσική". Ονομάστηκε έτσι όταν είπαν τον τρίτωνα ή το διάστημα του τέταρτου της επαυξημένης. Το μεσαιωνικό αυτί χρησιμοποιήθηκε για να ακούει τέλεια τέταρτα και πέμπτα. Η τέταρτη επαυξημένη, είναι στα μισά μεταξύ των δύο πιο συνηθισμένων χρονικών διαστημάτων, ήταν περίπου η χειρότερη διχόνια που μπορεί να φανταστεί κανείς. Γι αυτό πίστευαν ότι ο διάβολος ήταν μέσα στον τρίτωνα. Ήταν τέλεια επιλογή για εμάς, όχι μόνο λόγω της σημασίας που έχει, αλλά και γιατί ακούγεται ως ένα σκοτεινό κομμάτι, όπως η μουσική μας μερικές φορές. Μας αρέσει αυτή η σκοτεινή ρομαντική αισθητική, γι αυτό πιστεύουμε ότι το Diabulus in Musica ήταν το τέλειο όνομα για εμάς.
- Πως θα περιγράφετε την μουσική σας σε κάποιον που δεν σας έχει ακούσει ποτέ;
Gorka Elso: Είναι μία μίξη διάφορων μουσικών ειδών, από κλασσική μέχρι metal, αλλά όλα συνδυασμένα με σκοπό την επίτευξη ολικού δυναμισμού.
Adrián Vallejo: Η μουσική μας παίρνει το πάθος της κλασικής μουσική αλλά από την οπτική γωνία μίας metal μπάντας.
-Έτσι, "Secrets" λέγεται το ντεμπούτο album σας και είναι οφθαλμοφανές ότι έχετε ρίξει πολύ δουλειά πάνω του. Πως ήταν η διαδικασία του γραψίματος για το album? (Καθίσατε όλοι μαζί σε ένα δωμάτιο και αρχίσατε να γράφετε, ή ήταν διαφορετικές ιδέες που τις βάλατε μαζί;)
AV: Το "Secrets" γράφτηκε από τον Zube, τον Gorka και εμένα. Ο Xabi ήρθε στο συγκρότημα κατά τη διάρκεια των ηχογραφήσεων, ενώ ο Alex λίγο αργότερα. Για το επερχόμενο album κάναμε ότι κάναμε και με το "Secrets", αλλά αυτή τη φορά επικεντρωθήκαμε όλοι στο γράψιμο. Βασικά ένας γράφει ένα ολόκληρο κομμάτι και οι άλλοι βάζουν την δική τους οπτική γωνία και συναισθήματα. Αλλά, πριν γράψουμε, οργανώνουμε πολλές συναντήσεις για να γνωρίζουμε ακριβώς τι ακριβώς θέλουμε να κάνουμε και πως θα πρέπει να είναι τα κομμάτια μας. Ίσως αυτό είναι το πιο σημαντικό πράγμα.
- Και τι μπορείτε να μας πείτε για την διαδικασία των ηχογραφήσεων; Το να δουλέυεις με τους Sascha Paeth και Ad Sluijter πρέπει να είναι φανταστική εμπειρία!
AV: Ναι, είναι πολύ επαγγελματίες άνθρωποι. Η περισσότερη δουλειά έγινα μέσω Internet αλλά, τέλοσπαντων, μάθαμε πολλά.
GE: Στο "Secrets" δεν βιαζόμασταν και ξοδέψαμε την ώρα που χρειαζόμασταν για να έχουμε τον τέλειο ήχο και παίξιμο. Σε αυτή τη διαδικασία οι Sascha και Ad δεν αναμιχθήκανε. Αρχίσαμε να δουλεύουμε με τον Ad στην διαδικασία της μίξης, δεν μπορούσαμε να βγάλουμε τον ήχο που θέλαμε και μας βοήθησε πολύ. Τελικά έκανε όλη τη μίξη, και νομίζω ότι έκανε σπουδαία δουλειά. Μας είπε και κάποια κόλπα για μελλοντικές ηχογραφήσεις που, μαζί με την εμπειρία μας, χρησιμοποιήσαμε στο νέο μας album.
-Έτσι, περνάμε στο φρέσκο μέρος τώρα. Ετοιμάζεστε για το δεύτερο album, τι λεπτομέρειες έχουμε γι αυτό; (Θα κινηθείτε σε διαφορετική κατεύθυνση; Καμία έκπληξη;)
GE: Πιστεύω ότι θα είναι ένα βήμα μπροστά στο υλικό των DiM. Τα κομμάτια είναι πιο δυνατά και καλύτερα γραμμένα, ήμασταν πιο ικανοί να κάνουμε καλύτερη μίξη με πιο δυνατό ήχο και βομβιστικά εφέ. Είναι σίγουρα ένα εντυπωσιακό album.
AV: Ω, ναι! Θα είναι ένα εκπληκτικό album, μπορώ να πω ότι θα είναι ένα ενιαίο album, με πιο βαρύ ήχο και πολύ special guests. Ένα πράγμα που βελτιώσαμε είναι ότι βρήκαμε τον τρόπο να φτάσουμε στα όρια με τα συναισθήματα. Αυτή τη στιγμή όλα είναι ηχογραφημένα και την μίξη κάνει ο Jacob Hansen.
- Και επίσης κυκλοφορείτε ένα video clip γι αυτό το album, σωστά;
AV: Ναι, έχουμε γράψει ένα video clip με το νέο μας single. Θα κυκλοφορήσει από την MFVF DVD.
GE: Μπορούμε να πούμε επίσης ότι το video γράφτηκε σε πολύ όμορφα και μοναδικά σκηνικά από τα μέρη που ζούμε. Θα τα δείτε στο video 😉
-Φέτος, όπως και πέρσι, παίζετε στο Metal Female Voices Fest στο Βέλγιο, το καλύτερο μέρος για τις female metal bands και τους οπαδούς του. Πως είναι αυτή η εμπειρία;
Xabi Jareño: Η εμπειρία είναι φανταστική. Όλοι μας απολαμβάνουμε αυτό το φεστιβάλ πολύ. Όπως είπες, είναι το καλύτερο φεστιβάλ στο είδος μας, έτσι είναι πραγματικά εκπληκτικό.
GE: Από τότε που ξεκινήσαμε με τους DiM ήταν ένας από τους στόχους μας και τον πετύχαμε... μερικές φορές τα όνειρα γίνονται πραγματικότητα!
-Στο προηγούμενο MFVF είχατε αρκετές εκπλήξεις για τους οπαδούς, ένα μικρό choir για τα επικά μέρη και ντουέτο με την Maite Itoiz, τόσο για ένα κομμάτι σας όσο και για μία οπερέτα. Έχετε κάποια τέτοια έκπληξη που θα κάνετε φέτος και μπορείτε να μας αποκαλύψετε;
XJ: Χμ...μπορούμε μόνο να πούμε ότι φέτος θα είναι τουλάχιστον όσο ενδιαφέρον ήταν και πέρσι. Έχουμε ετοιμάσει ένα special show με κάποιες συνεργασίες και κάποια "άλλα πράγματα", κάτι πραγματικά special που δεν έχετε ξαναδεί σε άλλη metal συναυλία. Είμαστε σίγουροι ότι θα είναι δύσκολο να ξεχαστεί ένα τέτοιο show.
- Αυτό μου θύμισε ότι, το show σας στο MFVF8 συμπεριλήφθηκε στο MFVF DVD που κυκλοφόρησε φέτος. Ποια τραγούδια επιλέξατε για το dvd? 😛
GE: Χαχα, διάβασα στα Social Networks ανθρώπους που ζητούσαν κάποια συγκεκριμένα κομμάτια. Φυσικά εμείς έπρεπε να κάνουμε την επιλογή (αν και θα προτιμούσαμε να τα βάλουμε όλα, χαχα) και τα δύο κομμάτια που επιλέξαμε είναι: "Evolution"s Whim" και "Nocturnal Flowers". Νομίζω ότι αντιπροσωπεύουν πολύ καλά πως αισθανόμασταν στην σκηνή και πως επικοινωνούσαμε με το κοινό (που ήταν φανταστικό, εδώ που τα λέμε).
-Πίσω στο "Secrets", ένα άλλο σημείο το οποίο είναι πολύ ενδιαφέρον, είναι τα θέματα σας, πολύ ποικίλα από αγγέλος-δαίμονες σε πιο ανθρώπινα συναισθήματα και καταστάσεις. Ποια είναι η έμπνευσή σας στους στίχους;
ZA: Εμπνέομαι από τόσα πολλά πράγματα! Ειδικά από τη φύση και την ελευθερία. Υπάρχουν διάφορες εκδοχές στο μυαλό μου που αντανακλώνται στους στίχους, καμιά φορά δεν έχουν καμία σχέση μεταξύ τους, καθώς έχω ένα άστατο μυαλό χαχα. Θα έλεγα ότι το θέμα των στίχων είναι προσωπικές ανησυχίες, φόβοι ή συναισθήματα γενικότερα, υπάρχουν κάποια μυθολογικά θέματα επίσης… αλλά αυτό που μου αρέσει όταν γράφω είναι ότι όλοι μπορούν να πάρουν τους στίχους όπως θέλουν, αυτή είναι η μαγεία της μεταφοράς J
-Πως αντιδράσανε οι άνθρωποι και τα media με το ντεμπούτο σας;
GE: Βραβευτήκαμε ως το καλύτερο ντεμπούτο του 2010, καλύτερο ντεμπούτο album και μεγαλύτερο συγκρότημα – αποκάλυψη (στο MFVF) σε πολλά διαφορετικά websites και fanzines. Νομίζω πως η αντίδραση ήταν καλή, δεν ήταν;
-Σίγουρα πολύ θετική χεχε. Έχετε πλάνα για περιοδεία όταν το νέο σας album κυκλοφορήσει;
GE: Ναι, έχουμε πολλές επιλογές για να βγούμε περιοδεία, δουλεύουμε σκληρά για να το επιτύχουμε, αλλά μέχρι να επιβεβαιωθούν προτιμούμε να μην δώσουμε λεπτομέρειες, χεχε. Σήμερα είναι κάπως δύσκολο για μία ανερχόμενη μπάντα. Πρέπει να προωθείς κάθε συναυλία και να κερδίζεις αρκετά χρήματα ώστε να πληρώνεις το κόστος, έτσι δουλεύουμε σκληρά προσπαθώντας να οργανώσουμε την περιοδεία, ώστε να γίνει υπό τις καταλληλότερες προϋποθέσεις που είναι δυνατόν.
-Για να κλείσουμε, τι μήνυμα έχεις για όλους τους οπαδούς και τα fan clubs εκεί έξω;
DiM: Θα θέλαμε να ευχαριστήσουμε όλους για το ενδιαφέρον τους. Ελπίζουμε να σας δούμε κάπου και να απολαύσετε την μουσική μας και τις συναυλίες μας. Ευχαριστούμε για την υποστήριξη, πραγματικά το εκτιμούμε!
