1) Hi Duncan and welcome to Rockoverdose.gr. Well how are things these days for you?
DP: Hello there. I’m in northern Mexico at the moment, recovering from
a nasty illness that I have had for months. Getting better each day
though.
1) Tell us some things about your new album with Ion. Many guests and so many atmospheres into a cd I could say.
DP: I recorded most of it in Portugal at my friend's studio. I had a
great percussionist from France, and great flautist and
cello/violinist both from Lisbon. So we tracked most of the songs
there between us. It was a pleasure to record with talented and
enthusiastic musicians. In my experience musicians are the laziest
bastards on earth, so I was blessed this time around. The list of
guests on these albums is quite deceiving though, as the music is very
minimal, but people do their bits here and there.
2) What’s your inspiration when you are writing music and especially lyrics?
DP: I write about my past experiences and present situations, always
have done. As for the music, ideas come to me at different times.
Sometimes old tunes will pop into my mind and they will fit in with a
current creation, so I will work on them and piece something together.
Other times I'll be sat playing an instrument and come up with
something fresh. I’m not really inspired by other music as such, but I
do have my influences that go back a long time. I have my own style
because I go with what feels right to me.
3) What is Duncan Patterson doing musically at the moment?
DP: I have just written an album called The Brink, which is about the
'dumbing down' of society where people are encouraged not to think for
themselves, or follow their hearts. The modern music scenes are a
perfect example of this, and as I am involved in music a lot of the
album is about that. People who are obsessive 'fanatics' of a
well-known band yet are clueless when it comes to the actual songs
and the message (if there is one). I get quite a lot of unhealthy
attention from supposed Anathema 'fanatics', so I can write from
first-hand experience as well as from a witnesses point of view when I
go to gigs or attempt to converse with people about music these days.
4) What about live shows? Is there something for Greece?
DP: I don’t get any offers from Greece, nor do I get any cd orders. So
I’m not sure if anyone would show up if I actually did play.
5) You’ve been living in Greece for a long time… What do you think about
Greeks as music fans and as people in general? Is there anything that you
are missing from that period?
DP: I find Greece and Greeks in general to be highly charged. I blame
the coffee, but there’s really way too much shouting going on haha. It’s
a chaotic place but it does have its unique charm and character. I
smile when I think about the place. I won’t comment on what I have
witnessed of the music scene though. There are some great musical
people who are truly passionate about what they love, but they're in
the minority. My Greek friends and I have had millions of
discussions about it. I think if something (a band/album) is over hyped
then it attracts a certain type of person, but at the same time it
repulses another type of person. That applies to everywhere though I
guess. I miss my friends up in Thessaloniki, as I had some great times
up there. I have some close friends in Athens too but I'm not a big
fan of the city. I've also had some bad experiences with parasitical
people there so I prefer the north.
6) Is there a combination maybe through Anathema, Antimatter and Ion for
you?
DP: I guess the common denominator is me. My style of writing hasn't
changed that dramatically all the way through my career. The
instrumentation and the lyrical intent maybe, but the style is still
me.
7) We read on your site as well on Phase's, about the cooperation you had
with the Greek band, on a song of theirs, entitled “Ibidem”.
What do you think of their music?
DP: One of the guys got in touch with me and asked if I would be a
guest on their album. So I asked to hear some tracks to see if I liked
it. I was actually busy at the time but I loved that track "Ididem".
So I recorded a few synth parts and weird alien noises and sent it to
them. Hope they liked it 🙂 When I finally return to Greece I'll have
to hook up with the guys for a drink and some fine Greek cuisine.
8) Is there a big dream that you haven’t done yet in your music carrier or
in your life?
DP: The main thing that I want to achieve in life is contentment, and
that goes for every aspect in my life. I have worked a lot on myself
over the years to improve the quality of my existence and it really
worked. Though there will always be obstacles, the trick is how to
deal with them calmly and without fear.
9) Tell me one song from yours that is definitely written for “you” and
maybe is taken from a situation of your life.
DP: All of my songs are written that way. I'll give you an old one
though anyway. Back in the mid-nineties I was suffering from severe
anxiety attacks which could hit me at any time. I have since
discovered that they were due to my allergies and too much caffeine
intake, but I was unwise to it back then. I had difficulty sleeping
which led me to drinking, which led to hangovers, which increase my
anxiety levels along with daft amounts of caffeine. At the same point
in time the band (Anathema) were starting to get bigger due to the
success of the Eternity album. As we gained more recognition we also
attracted a lot of parasites. People hanging around us to try to get
something from our popularity for themselves. During this time I was
writing the most part of the Alternative 4 album. One night I had a
terrible attack and I was having difficulty breathing. Many things
were going through my mind, I wasn’t being respected for my input in
the band especially from the record label. People were taking
advantage of the guy who was most easily influenced in the band and
trying to get him onside for their own selfish agenda, which was often
against me as they knew I wouldn't allow them to interfere directly. I
was deeply unhappy with my life and the people I was surrounded by,
plus my health and mental state were hanging by a thread. That was the
night I wrote 'Lost Control' which, to this day, people can still
recognise the power and honesty behind the song. Its no coincidence
that people can actually feel the energy and distress in it, as it is
100% real. Thankfully the parasites have all fucked off now and been
exposed, and I neither drink caffeine or gallons of vodka anymore. So
I regained control, so to speak.
10) If you could change one thing in the world what would be this?
DP: I wish that the majority of people would just be themselves, and
not follow each other like sheep. Things would improve on many many
levels then.

1) Λοιπόν Duncan πως είναι για σένα τα πράγματα αυτές τις μέρες?
DP: Γεια χαρά, είμαι στο Mexico αυτή τη στιγμή και αναρρώνω από μία δυσάρεστη ασθένεια που είχα εδώ και μήνες. Πηγαίνω καλύτερα όμως μέρα με τη μέρα.
2) Πες μας μερικά πράγματα σχετικά με το καινούριο σου album με τους Ion. Πολλοί καλεσμένοι και πολύ ατμόσφαιρα μέσα σε ένα cd θα μπορούσα να πω.
DP: Το περισσότερο ηχογραφήθηκε στην Πορτογαλία στο studio ενός φίλου. Είχα κρουστά από την Γαλλία, ένα σπουδαίο φλάουτο και έναν βιολιστή/ τσέλο και οι δύο από τη Λισαβόνα και έτσι ετοιμάσαμε τα περισσότερα κομμάτια εκεί μεταξύ μας. Ήταν ευχαρίστηση μου να ηχογραφώ με ταλαντούχους και ενθουσιώδεις μουσικούς. Από την εμπειρία μου οι μουσικοί είναι τα πιο τεμπέλικα καθάρματα στη γη. Και αυτή τη φορά ήμουν ευλογημένος. Η λίστα των guest σε αυτό το album είναι αρκετή.
3) Ποια είναι η έμπνευση σου όταν γράφεις μουσική και ειδικά στίχους?
DP: Γράφω σχετικά με εμπειρίες από το παρελθόν αλλά και το παρών μου. Η μουσική μου έρχεται σε διαφορετικές στιγμές. Πολλές φορές έχω κάποιους παλιούς ήχους στο μυαλό μου οι οποίοι θα μπορούσαν να χρησιμοποιηθούν με μία πιο μοντέρνα έκδοση και έτσι τους κολλάω κάπως με τους στίχους. Άλλες φορές κάθομαι παίζω κάποιο όργανο και βγάζω κάτι πιο φρέσκο. Δεν εμπνέομαι από άλλες μουσικές συνήθως αλλά έχω τις επιρροές μου οι οποίες έρχονται από αρκετά παλιά. Έχω το δικό μου στυλ.
4) Τι κάνει ο Duncan Patterson μουσικά αυτή τη στιγμή?
DP: Μόλις έγραψα ένα album που ονομάζεται “The Brink” και έχει να κάνει με την σημερινή κοινωνία που δεν επιτρέπει στους ανθρώπους να ακολουθούν την καρδιά τους. Η σύγχρονη μουσική σκηνή είναι ένα
τέλειο παράδειγμα για να το δείξεις αυτό. Παίρνω κάποια όχι τόσο καλά σχόλια από υποτίθεται φανατικούς οπαδούς των Anathema αλλά πηγαίνοντας σε συναυλίες και συνομιλώντας με κόσμο μπορώ από πρώτο χέρι να γράψω πάνω σε αυτό.
5) What about live shows? Is there something for Greece?
DP: Δεν έχω προτάσεις από Ελλάδα αλλά ούτε και παραγγελίες για cd. Οπότε δε νομίζω να υπήρχε κόσμος σε επερχόμενη εμφάνιση μου εκεί.
6) Έχεις μείνει στην Ελλάδα για πολύ καιρό. Τι έχεις να πεις για τους Έλληνες ως fans αλλά και ως ανθρώπους γενικά? Είναι κάτι που σου λείπει από εκείνη την περίοδο?
DP: Θεωρώ την Ελλάδα και τους Έλληνες κάπως φορτισμένους τελευταία. Κατηγορώ τον καφέ σας αλλά υπάρχει περιθώριο εξέλιξης χαχα….Είναι ένα χαοτικό μέρος με πολύ όμως γοητεία και χαρακτήρα. Χαμογελάω όταν σκέφτομαι αυτό το μέρος αλλά δε θα σχολιάσω το τι έχω βιώσει στη μουσική σκηνή εκεί. Υπάρχουν κάποιοι άνθρωποι αρκετά παθιασμένοι μουσικά αλλά είναι μειοψηφία. Οι Έλληνες φίλοι μου και εγώ κάναμε άπειρες συζητήσεις πάνω σε αυτό. Όταν ένα συγκρότημα επηρεάζει ένα σύνολο ανθρώπων άλλο τόσο απωθεί ένα άλλο μέρος του. Αυτό συμβαίνει πάντα. Μου έλειψαν οι φίλοι μου στη Θεσσαλονίκη. Πέρασα πολύ καλά εκεί. Έχω μερικούς πολύ καλούς φίλους στην Αθήνα επίσης αλλά δεν είμαι πολύ μεγάλος fan της πόλης. Είχα και κάποιες άσχημες εμπειρίες με ανθρώπους «παράσιτα» εκεί οπότε προτιμώ τα βόρεια.
7) Υπάρχει ίσως μια σύγκριση ανάμεσα στους Anathema , Antimatter αλλά και στους Ion για σένα?
DP: Νομίζω πως ο κοινός παρανομαστής είμαι εγώ. Το ύφος της γραφής μου δεν άλλαξε δραματικά στη διαδρομή της καριέρας μου. Τα όργανα και η λυρική πρόθεση ίσως αλλά το στυλ είναι ακόμα «εγώ».
8) Διαβάσαμε στο site σου για την συνεργασία που είχες με ένα ελληνικό συγκρότημα τους Phase σε ένα τραγούδι τους με τίτλο “Ibidem”. Τι πιστεύεις για τη μουσική τους?
DP: Ένα από τα παιδιά ήρθε σε επαφή μαζί μου και μου ζήτησε να είμαι guest στο album τους. Έτσι ζήτησα να ακούσω κάποια κομμάτια να δω αν θα μου άρεσαν. Ήμουν πραγματικά πολύ απασχολημένος εκείνη τη στιγμή αλλά το “Ibidem” μου άρεσε πολύ. Έτσι ηχογράφησα κάποια synths σημεία αλλά και κάποιες περίεργες κραυγές και τα έστειλα σε αυτούς. Ελπίζω να τους άρεσαν . Όταν τελικά επιστρέψω στην Ελλάδα θα βρεθώ με τα παιδιά για ένα ποτό αλλά για καλή ελληνική κουζίνα.
9) Υπάρχει κάποιο μεγάλο όνειρο που δεν έχει πραγματοποιηθεί ακόμα στην μουσική σου καριέρα η στη ζωή σου?
DP: Το κύριο πράγμα που θέλω να πετύχω στη ζωή μου είναι ικανοποίηση, και
αυτό ισχύει για κάθε πτυχή της ζωής μου. Έχω δουλέψει πολύ πάνω στον εαυτό μου όλα αυτά τα χρόνια για τη βελτίωση της ποιότητας της ύπαρξής μου και πραγματικά λειτούργησε. Αν και θα υπάρχουν πάντα εμπόδια, το τέχνασμα είναι πώς να τα αντιμετωπίσεις ήρεμα και χωρίς φόβο.
10) Πες μου ένα τραγούδι σου το οποίο θα έλεγες ότι σε αντιπροσωπεύει πλήρως και ίσως είναι παρμένο από κάποια προσωπική σου εμπειρία.
DP: Όλα μου τα τραγούδια είναι γραμμένα έτσι αλλά θα σου πω ένα παλιό. Πίσω στα μέσα του ’90 είχα σοβαρές κρίσεις άγχους οι οποίες προέκυψαν από αλλεργίες αλλά και από υπερβολική δόση καφεΐνης. Είχα δυσκολία στον ύπνο κάτι που με οδήγησε στο ποτό και έπειτα στον αλκοολισμό κάτι που αύξανε τις κρίσεις αυτές. Την ίδια στιγμή τότε με τους (Anathema) είχαμε μεγάλη επιτυχία με το Eternity album. Όσο παίρναμε δημοσιότητα τόσο και προσελκύαμε και πολλά παράσιτα οι οποίοι θέλανε να κλέψουνε και κάτι από την δημοτικότητα μας για τον εαυτό τους. Τότε είχα γράψει το μεγαλύτερο μέρος του Alternative 4 album. Μια νύχτα είχα μια φοβερή δυσκολία στην αναπνοή μου. Πολλά πέρασαν από το μυαλό μου. Δεν σεβάστηκα αρκετά για όσα προσέφερα στο συγκρότημα και ειδικά από την εταιρεία. Ήμουν βαθειά δυσαρεστημένος με την ζωή μου και από τους ανθρώπους που με περιέβαλαν. Συν την υγεία μου και την ψυχική μου κατάσταση η οποία κρεμόταν από ένα σκοινί. Αυτή ήταν και η νύχτα που έγραψα το 'Lost Control' από το οποίο κομμάτι ακόμα και σήμερα ο κόσμος καταλαβαίνει την δύναμη και την ειλικρίνεια που κρύβει μέσα του. Ευτυχώς τα τότε παράσιτα δεν υπάρχουν πια και ούτε εγώ δεν πίνω καφεΐνη η γαλόνια βότκας πια. Και έτσι ανέκτησα τον έλεγχο.
11) Αν μπορούσες να αλλάξεις ένα πράγμα στον κόσμο ποιο θα ήταν αυτό?
DP: Εύχομαι οι άνθρωποι να είναι απλά ο εαυτός τους και να μην ακολουθούν ο ένας τον άλλον σαν πρόβατα. Τα πράγματα μπορούν να βελτιωθούν κατά πολύ μετά από αυτό.
