- Από τη Πορτογαλία δεν βλέπω τελευταία αρκετές μπάντες στο προσκήνιο. Πείτε μας μερικά πράγματα για εσάς και την πορεία σας και που νομίζετε οτι οφείλετε αυτό;
Hugo: Γεια σας! Άρχισα να παίζω μουσική όταν ήμουν 15 χρονών αλλά επαγγελματικά όλα άρχισαν με το δικό μου solo άλμπουμ το 2000, με όνομα Atlantis. Μετά απ’ αυτό, δημιούργησα το γκρουπ ‘’Sonic Pulsar’’ με άλλα 2 άλμπουμς, ένα το 2002 και το άλλο το 2005. Την παρούσα περίοδο το γκρουπ αυτό μετεξελίχθηκε στο Project Creation, ένα μουσικό εγχείρημα στο οποίο είναι καλεσμένοι πολλοί μουσικοί. Για το επικό αυτό εγχείρημα, έγιναν 2 άλμπουμς και τώρα δουλεύω πάνω σ’ ένα τρίτο. Το Project Creation έχει καθορισμένη ταυτότητα που περιλαμβάνει και τα 3 άλμπουμς, είναι πολύ προοδευτικό ροκ και metal προορισμένο να συμπίπτει με το Cybermetal των Factory of Dreams.
Φτάνουμε έτσι στους Factory of Dreams που συμπεριλαμβάνει ήδη 3 άλμπουμς! Ξεκίνησα αυτό το γκρουπ για να μπορώ να δημιουργήσω απλούστερη μουσική απ’ ότι με το προηγούμενο εγχείρημά μου. Αλλά ακόμη κι έτσι, είναι προοδευτικό ροκ και ο ήχος είναι αρκετά διαφορετικός, υποθέτω, απ’ ότι συνήθως.
Παράγοντας επιτυχίας και διαφορετικότητας αποτελεί σίγουρα ο αυθόρμητος τύπος μουσικής. Αφήνουμε τη μουσική ελεύθερη να λάμψει και δε συνθέτουμε βάσει σταθερών μουσικών προτύπων. Βάζουμε μέσα επικά ορχηστρικά κομμάτια και μερικά «κρυμμένα» μουσικά όργανα για να την κάνουμε περισσότερο ενδιαφέρων.
Η Jessica έχει μοναδική φωνή κι αυτό είναι επιπλέον παράγοντας επιτυχίας για τη μουσική του Factory of Dreams. Εκτός από εξαίσια φωνή, η Jessica συνθέτει τα δικά της κομμάτια, τα οποία είναι -το λιγότερο- ονειρεμένα! Αυτό από μόνο του είναι φανταστικό!
Όσον αφορά τώρα στα μουσικά, εγώ παίζω περισσότερο την κιθάρα αλλά τα καταφέρνω εξίσου καλά και με τα πλήκτρα. Για σύνθεση μουσικής βασίζομαι στα synthesizers αλλά για εκτελέσεις και γρήγορα σόλο αγαπώ την ηλεκτρική κιθάρα…
Jessica: Ξεκίνησα να παίζω πιάνο όταν ήμουν 7 χρονών, τραγούδησα στα 15 μου και στα 17 έγραψα την πρώτη μουσική μου! Δουλεύω με τον Hugo και στο Factory of Dreams από τα τέλη του 2007, είναι πολύ διασκεδαστικό και πηγή έμπνευσης. Παράγω demos με δική μου μουσική για το ‘’Once There Was’’ και είμαι επίσης μέλος στο Αργεντίνικο γκρουπ Beto Vazquez Infinity.
Νομίζω ότι παράγοντας επιτυχίας του Factory of Dreams, εκτός απ’ αυτά που ανέφερε ο Hugo, είναι η αποφασιστικότητα και επιμονή του. Η παραγωγή video clips και παρόμοιων καλλιτεχνικών παραγωγών δεν είναι και το ευκολότερο πράγμα στον κόσμο και το γεγονός ότι ο Hugo τα κάνει αυτά αποδεικνύει ότι κάνει κάτι παραπάνω για να κρατήσει τη μουσική ζωντανή από απλά CD μόνο. Φυσικά τα CD είναι σπουδαία αλλά τα video κάτι παραπάνω, το οποίο είναι φανταστικό! Επιπλέον, αγαπάμε κι οι δυό αυτό που κάνουμε, αν δεν υπάρχει ψυχή πίσω απ’ τη μουσική φαντάζομαι δε θα είναι και τόσο ενδιαφέρον το τελικό αποτέλεσμα…
- Πρόσφατα είχαμε ένα review σχετικά με τον τρίτο σας δίσκο "Melotronical" ο οποίος άφησε καλές εντυπώσεις στην ομάδα του Rockoverdose.gr. Πείτε μας λίγα πράγματα σχετικά για αυτό.
Hugo: Ευχαριστώ! Το Melotronical είναι το δυνατό μας ατού έως τώρα, κυρίως επειδή είναι πιο προοδευτικό και επιθετικό μουσικώς και φωνητικώς (φωνητικά, άντρες και γυναίκες είναι δυνατότεροι). Κατά τη γνώμη μου είναι το καλύτερό μας άλμπουμ μέχρι τώρα.
Θέμα του άλμπουμ είναι η εξέλιξη ενός ηλεκτρονικού μορίου σε άνθρωπο, βασικά, και πως αυτή η οντότητα αρχίζει να συνδιαλέγεται με τον κόσμο. Αλλά είναι και κάτι πολύ βαθύτερο απ’ αυτό, το άλμπουμ ασχολείται με τη μοίρα, τη δημιουργία, την ελευθερία. Στον κόσμο το δικό μας και του Melotronical οι άνθρωποι ακολουθούν τάσεις, ηγέτες, η ‘’μοίρα’’ τους ελέγχει και όχι αυτοί τη μοίρα. Υπάρχει λίγος χρόνος να Ζήσει κανείς μια πλήρη ζωή, ποιοτική ζωή…Το ‘Protonic Stream’ είναι το 4ο κομμάτι και μιλά γι’ αυτόν τον
κόσμο με διαστρεβλωμένη δημοκρατία, όπου οι άνθρωποι είναι όντως φυλακισμένοι στις δουλειές τους, τη ζωή τους…Είναι σκληρή κριτική όταν κοιτάζω από ψηλά τη Γη Μας.
Όταν ξεκινά το άλμπουμ με το επιθετικό και χαοτικό Enter Nucleon, παρατηρούμε αυτό το μόριο να εξελίσσεται, βλέπει τον κόσμο και τον ερωτεύεται. Μέχρι το 3ο κομμάτι
μεταμορφώνεται σε ζωντανό οργανισμό που αναπνέει. Όταν ξεκαθαρίζουν σιγά-σιγά τα πράγματα, ο κόσμος δεν είναι αυτός ο παράδεισος που νόμιζε, ζωές με άγχος, χωρίς χρόνο για απόλαυση της ζωής, αυτά κάνουν τον κόσμο σκοτεινότερο στο νέο αυτό άτομο. Το υπόλοιπο του άλμπουμ είναι αυτή η συνεχής αναζήτηση για τρόπους αλλαγής των πραγμάτων και διαστάσεων. Να επαναπρογραμματίσουμε το σύμπαν! Εξάλλου, αυτή η οντότητα δεν ζει σ’ ένα δικό της κόσμο, ίσως φτιαγμένο απ’ αυτή;
Jessica: Συμφωνώ ότι αυτό όντως είναι το καλύτερο άλμπουμ έως τώρα. Φυσικά πάντα θα νομίζουμε έτσι, ότι δηλαδή το πιο πρόσφατο άλμπουμ θα είναι το καλύτερο μέχρι τώρα. Αυτό σημαίνει ότι η μουσική έχει προοδεύσει, όλοι έχουμε προοδεύσει. Ακόμη κι έτσι, πιστεύω ότι μπορείς ν’ ακούς τη μουσική του Factory of Dreams μέσα απ’ όλα τα κομμάτια του. Τα tracks είναι σχετικά περίπλοκα και ίσως όχι δομημένα ως είθισται στη μουσική βιομηχανία, κάτι που φαίνεται να είναι ταυτόσημο χαρακτηριστικό του Hugo όταν γράφει μουσική, αλλά νομίζω ότι ταιριάζει ωραία. Αυτό πάντως κάνει το κάθε track ν’ ακούγεται διαφορετικά.
- Πως θα προσδιορίζατε τη μουσική σας και γενικά σε ποιο χώρο θεωρείτε οτι ανήκετε;
Είναι λιγάκι δύσκολο να κατηγοριοποιηθεί η μουσική μας, νομίζω ότι είναι καλύτερα ν’ αφήσουμε τον κόσμο ν’ ακούσει τη μουσική και ν’ αποφασίσει αν του αρέσει ή όχι, ασχέτως του στυλ. Παρόλα αυτά, η μέταλ και ηλεκτρονική μουσική είναι παρούσα σε όλο το έργο μου, αλλά μπορεί να διαφοροποιείται κάπως αναλόγως το γκρουπ και άλμπουμ. Έχουμε λοιπόν το Melotronical, ένα είδος Cybermetal ή ατμοσφαιρικό μέταλ, αν και ‘ατμοσφαιρικό μέταλ’ ταίριαζε καλύτερα να χαρακτηρίσει το πρώτο μας άλμπουμ Poles, το οποίο είναι αρκετά ελαφρότερο.
Το Factory of Dreams είναι λιγότερο προοδευτικό από το Project Creation, το οποίο είναι το άλλο μου έργο όπου είναι καλεσμένοι κι άλλοι μουσικοί να παίξουν.
Δεν προσκολλιέμαι σε πρότυπα ενώ γράφω μουσική, ακολουθώ απλά το ένστικτό μου. Πάντα υπάρχει κάτι νέο που προστίθεται στα τραγούδια, όπως επικά ορχηστρικά και κάποια ‘κρυμμένα’ όργανα, ένα είδος ‘υποσυνείδητων’ μηνυμάτων και μελωδιών που εμπλουτίζουν τη μουσική μου.
- Βλέπω οτι χρησιμοποιείτε αρκετά και διαφορετικά όργανα στα κομμάτια σας. Πως καταλήξατε εκεί και πως βλέπετε την πορεία αυτης της επιλογής σας;
Όταν παίζεις αρκετά είδη μουσικής και θέλεις να μεταδώσεις πολλά συναισθήματα και ιδέες με ένα κομμάτι ή μουσικό έργο, είναι ωραία να έχεις διαθέσιμα ανά πάσα στιγμή αρκετά όργανα και ήχους, για να χαρακτηρίσεις και περιγράψεις κατάλληλα αυτό που νιώθεις. Οι κυριότερες ιδέες μου βασίζονται στην επιστημονική φαντασία, δηλαδή, ‘Όπως το Σύμπαν έχει πολλά πρόσωπα έτσι και η μουσική μου’ θα έλεγα. Το Project Creation είναι έκρηξη μουσικών γεύσεων, με σαξόφωνο, φλάουτα, εθνικά μουσικά όργανα κλπ. Το Factory of Dreams έχει στενότερα όρια, η μουσική του αμεσότερη. Χρησιμοποιώ λοιπόν κυρίως μπάσα, κιθάρες και synthesizers…και φωνητικά, θεωρώντας τα και αυτά μουσικά όργανα, ειδικά όταν πρόκειται για ένα μοναδικό μουσικό όργανο όπως η Jessica!
Λατρεύω τις συνθέσεις, είναι ένα ολόκληρο σύμπαν δυνατοτήτων, περισσότερο δε με εξιτάρουν τα όργανα, αν και τα καταφέρνω πιο πολύ με την κιθάρα. Οι συνθέσεις είναι πιο πολύ ποιοτικές από ποτέ, πραγματικά εξαίσιες. Η μπάσα κιθάρα εμφανίστηκε πολύ αργότερα. Με εντυπωσίασαν οι συνθέσεις γιατί δημιούργησαν δυνατούς και πρωτοποριακούς ήχους, κι επίσης, αναπαράγουν πραγματικά όργανα, οι δυνατότητες είναι ατελείωτες ή σχεδόν ατελείωτες…Ακόμη κι ο Μότσαρτ ή ο Μπετόβεν θα περιβάλλονταν από συνθέσεις αν ζούσαν σήμερα, είμαι σίγουρος γι’ αυτό.
- Διατηρείτε την ίδια 'κατεύθυνση' στην μέχρι τώρα πορεία σας ή έχετε την τάση να κάνετε πειραματισμούς;
Hugo: Δοκιμάζω διαφορετικά πράγματα, παρόλο που αυτή τη φορά θα εργαστώ με τον ίδιο ήχο που χρησιμοποίησα στο Melotronical για το μελλοντικό άλμπουμ Factory of Dreams. Όταν άρχισα με το Factory of Dreams, ήθελα κάτι που να συγγενεύει με προοδευτικό και μέταλ ρεύμα, αλλά ποτέ να παραμείνω μόνο σ’ αυτά. Για μένα το κλειδί αποτελεί πάντα η μελωδία και ενδιαφέρθηκα περισσότερο γι’ αυτή όταν έγραφα μουσική. Τη μελωδία θυμούνται πάντα οι άνθρωποι και το αποτύπωμα της μουσικής, κι έτσι η πρόκληση για μένα ήταν να επικεντρωθώ στη μελωδία και παραγωγή παρά σε περίπλοκα πράγματα, όπως έκανα με το Project Creation.
Στα CD του Project Creation, συνήθως δουλεύω με πολλούς μουσικούς, και παρότι είναι δύσκολο να οργανωθούμε, κάνει τη μουσική απέραντα όμορφη αλλά και περίπλοκη, γεννώντας πολλά νέα στοιχεία και στυλ μουσικής στις συνθέσεις. Αυτό κάνει το Project Creation ένα επικό έργο, που καλύπτει πολλά μουσικά ρεύματα και με μεγάλο θέμα.
Ένα άλλο σημαντικό πράγμα είναι ότι πάντα κάνω αυτό που θέλω και ό,τι μου έρχεται στο μυαλό. Έτσι εξηγείται και γιατί όλα τα άλμπουμ του Factory of Dreams είναι ηχητικά διαφορετικά, αν και πάντα έχουμε ίδια στοιχεία, όπως την κιθάρα και τα ηχητικά της Jessica.
Jessica: Προσπαθώ κι εγώ να πειραματίζομαι με τα ηχητικά. Φυσικά δε μπορώ να κάνω κάτι καλύτερο με τη φωνή μου, ακούγεται ακόμη το ίδιο! Δοκιμάζοντας όμως διάφορες τεχνικές και άλλα παρόμοια, δίνουν -περιστασιακά- στα ηχητικά διαφορετική χροιά. Δουλεύοντας σκληρά με τον Hugo με κάνει να μαθαίνω καινούργια πράγματα για τη φωνή μου σε κάθε άλμπουμ, κάτι πραγματικά όμορφο.
-Ποιές μπάντες σας έχουν επηρεάσει και ποιές νομίζετε οτι σας έλκουν ακόμα;
Hugo: Υπάρχουν γκρουπ που ακούω συνεχώς και ακόμη με διασκεδάζουν, αλλά όσον αφορά επιρροές είναι δύσκολο να πω γιατί πάντα κάνω αυτό που μου έρχεται στο μυαλό, σπανίως δε σκέφτομαι άλλα γκρουπ ενώ δημιουργώ μουσική.
Πάντα μου άρεσε ο Devin Townsend, ή το άλμπουμ ‘Sex and Religion’ του Steve Vai, ή τώρα με το SYL και το γκρουπ του Devin Townsend ή σόλο. Επίσης μου αρέσει ο Vangelis, το σύνηθες ποπ/ροκ του ’80, ο Def Leppard, ο Bryan Adams, ή το προοδευτικό ροκ όπως οι Yes, Pink Floyd, και μέταλ Ozzy Osbourne, Dream Theatre, Rush, The Gathering...
Εκτός απ’ αυτά, πάντα μου άρεσαν οι ταινίες και τα βιβλία επιστημονικής φαντασίας. Μικρός επηρεάστηκα πολύ από τις ταινίες του Steven Spielberg, όπως Close Encounters και E.T, καθώς επίσης και το Αlien του Ridley Scott, ή το The Thing του John Carpenter, κλπ. Μου αρέσει επίσης η αστρονομία, τα μυστηριώδη φαινόμενα, όλα αυτά δε με ωθούν να επεκτείνομαι και μετατρέπω τις ιδέες αυτές σε μουσική.
Jessica: Ίσως οι μπάντες που με επηρεάζουν περισσότερο είναι οι The Gathering, Nightwish, Sarah Brightman, Enya, Björk και Within Temptation. Νομίζω ότι πάντα επηρεάζεσαι από μουσικές που ακούς και διασκεδάζεις, είναι κάπως αναπόφευκτο και ωραίο, εφόσον προσπαθείς να δημιουργήσεις το δικό σου στυλ με αυτές τις επιρροές.
-Η μουσική σκηνή της χώρας σας σε πιο επίπεδο κινείται; Υπάρχει ανταπόκριση στη μουσική σας;
Είναι σχετικά δύσκολη ‘αγορά’, το αστείο της υπόθεσης είναι ότι παρόλο που δεν πουλάμε πολύ εδώ, ανακαλύπτω πολλούς θαυμαστές του Factory of Dreams. Η πειρατεία είναι ΤΕΡΑΣΤΙΟ πρόβλημα στις μέρες μας.
Το Μάρτιο έδωσα μια συνέντευξη για το ραδιοφωνικό show Via Noctirna, ζωντανά, ενώ όλος ο Μάρτιος ήταν σημαντικός για τη μουσική μέταλ στην Πορτογαλία. Ζωντάνεψε το Heaven wood μετά από πολύ καιρό, και κυκλοφόρησαν 2 νέα ποιοτικά άλμπουμ. Άλλα γκρουπάκια, όπως οι Urban Tales και Oblique, ήταν η επιτυχία της χρονιάς.
Αυτά τα ονόματα είναι που κάνουν ‘κλικ’. Επιπλέον, δίνω ιδιαίτερη σημασία στη διεθνή σκηνή αλλά η Πορτογαλική Moonspell αποτελεί αναφορά της μέταλ/γκοθ μουσικής. Και διαπρέπουν εκεί…
Οι εμπορικοί ραδιοσταθμοί δεν παίζουν μουσική μέταλ. Για ν’ ακούσει κάποιος μέταλ θα πρέπει να πάει σε online διαδικτυακούς σταθμούς ή κάποια συγκεκριμένα show όπως το φανταστικό Hypertensão του Antonio Freitas, ή το Via Nocturna.
- Έχετε καθόλου επαφή ή απόψεις σχετικά με την Ελληνική σκηνή και γενικότερα με τις 'Ελληνικές μπάντες;
Διατηρώ επαφή κυρίως μέσω webzines και κάποιων ειδησεογραφικών sites. Έχω επαφή με το Νίκο από το http://www.greekrebels.gr
Δεν έχω πάντως ιδιαίτερη τακτική επαφή με μπάντες. Γνωρίζω μερικές που μου αρέσουν, όπως οι InnerWish, οι προοδευτικοί ‘μεταλάδες’ Fragile Vastness, οι Wastefall και η προοδευτική δυνατή μέταλ μπάντα Emerald Sun, για παράδειγμα.
-Είστε απο οτι βλέπω μια μπάντα 2 ατόμων. Έχετε εμφανιστεί ζωντανά ποτέ; Έχετε στα σχέδια σας να εμφανιστείτε στο άμεσο μέλλον;
Hugo: Βασικά είμαστε γκρουπ των studio, αλλά ποιος ξέρει…την παρούσα φάση προετοιμάζουμε το νέο video clip για μέρος του Melotronical και θα είναι το highlight του έργου προς το παρόν. Προσπαθούμε να στήσουμε επικό σκηνικό και αρκετά ατμοσφαιρικά οπτικά και αισθητικά. Νομίζω θα είναι φανταστικό! Έχουμε επίσης αρκετές συνεντεύξεις στον ορίζοντα και κάμποσες διαφημιστικές προωθήσεις εδώ κι εκεί. Θα δούμε πως θα προχωρήσει λοιπόν…
Επιπλέον, προωθούμε εντατικά τους Factory of Dreams σε διάφορα δίκτυα κοινωνικής δικτύωσης και η μέχρι τώρα ανταπόκριση υπήρξε εξαιρετικά θετική.
-Τι θα θέλατε να πείτε στους οπαδούς σας στην Ελλάδα;
Ελπίζουμε να αγοράσουν όλοι το άλμπουμ, πρέπει να σταματήσουμε την πειρατεία όλοι μαζί καθώς καταστρέφει την ίδια τη μουσική. Αν σου αρέσει η μουσική, απλά αγόρασέ την! Ελάτε μαζί μας στα κοινωνικά δίκτυα, ειδικά στο Facebook που εξαπλώνεται γρήγορα.

- We see quite few bands from Portugal lately; please tell some things about you, your career and factors of success.
Hugo: Hi! Well, I started making music when I was about 15 years old but professionally it all started with my first solo album, back in 2000, called Atlantis. After this one I formed the band “Sonic Pulsar” and released 2 albums, one in 2002 and the second in 2005. Right now, this band actually evolved into Project Creation, a project where several musicians are invited. Two albums were released for this epic project, and I'm working on the 3rd album now. Project Creation has a very defined storyline spanning across three albums and it is very much progressive rock and metal oriented to contrast with Factory of Dreams' Cybermetal.
So now we come to Factory of Dreams that already has 3 albums in store! I started this band to be able to make simpler music than I did with my other project. But still, it is progressive and the sound is quite different from what is usually done I suppose.
A factor of success and of difference is indeed the spontaneous nature of the music. We let the music shine and we do not compose based on formulaic song structures. We try to include epic orchestrations and some 'hidden' instruments to make it all more interesting.
Jessica also has quite a unique voice and that is a strong factor of success for the music of Factory of Dreams. She's not only a fantastic singer, but Jessica composes her vocal parts, all harmonies. That's just great!
As far as instruments are concerned, I mostly play the guitar but also manage to handle the keyboards pretty well. For music creation I definitely stick to synthesizers, but for performances and fast soloing, the electric guitar is my favourite.
Jessica: I started playing the piano when I was 7, singing when I was 15 and when I was about 17 I started writing my own music. I’ve been working with Hugo and Factory of Dreams since late 2007, and it’s a lot of fun and very inspiring work. I’m releasing demos with my own music under the project name Once There Was and I’m a part of the Argentinean band Beto Vazquez Infinity, too.
I think one factor of success for Factory of Dreams, apart from what Hugo already mentioned, might be his determination. Producing video clips and stuff like that isn’t the easiest thing, and the fact that Hugo does this definitely shows he’s doing stuff to keep the music alive more than through CD’s only. Which is good too of course, CD’s are great, but videos add a bit more. Which is awesome! Plus, we both love doing what we do. If there’s no soul behind the music I suppose it won’t turn out too interesting in the end.
- We recently hosted a review of your third album ‘’Melotronical’’, leaving very good impressions to Rockoverdose.gr members. Tell us some things about the album…
Hugo: Thanks! Melotronical is our strongest album so far, and by strong I mean in two different ways; it is more aggressive musically and vocally (both male and female vocals are stronger), and it's our best album to date in my opinion.
The subject of the album is the evolution of an electronic molecule into a person basically, and how this entity starts dealing with the world. But it is far more deep. The album deals with destiny, with creation, with freedom. In our world and in the world of Melotronical, people follow trends, follow a leader, ‘destiny’ controls them and not the other way ‘round. There’s little time to Live a full life, quality time you know.. ‘Protonic Stream’ is track number 4 and this track speaks about this world with a false democracy implanted, where people are indeed imprisoned in their jobs, lives,... This is really a big criticism, when I look upon ‘our’ Earth.
When the album begins, with the aggressive and chaotic opener ‘Enter Nucleon’, we witness this electronic molecule evolve, she sees the world and falls in love with it. Upon track 3 it becomes a living breathing entity. Once things start getting clearer, the world isn’t such a paradise anymore, stressful lives and no time to really enjoy it makes the world seem darker to this new person. The rest of the album is this constant search for a way to change things and to change its own dimension. Reprogram the universe! After all isn't this entity living in a world of her own, perhaps created by herself?
Jessica: I can agree that this is the best album to date, definitely. Hopefully that will always be the case, that we think the latest album recorded is the best one so far, since that means the music has progressed, and that we have progressed, too. Still I think you can hear the Factory of Dreams-sound through all releases. The tracks are a bit complex and perhaps not the standard approach concerning song structure, which seems to be Hugo’s thing when writing music, and I think it works great. That makes each track different.
- How would you define your music and where do you think you belong?
It’s difficult to categorize our music, I think that the best is for people to listen and see if they like it, independently of style. However, well, metal and electronic is present throughout all my music, but depending on the band and album, it may change slightly. So, let’s see! Melotronical is a kind of Cybermetal or an atmospheric metal, even though ‘atmospheric metal’ was better suited to characterize our first album Poles which is much lighter.
Factory of Dreams is less progressive than Project Creation, which is my other project where more musicians are invited to play.
While writing tracks, I don't stick to formulas, I just follow my instincts. There's always something new added to the songs, including epic orchestrations and some 'hidden' instruments, kind of like subliminal messages and melodies to make my music richer.
- We can see that you use many different music instruments in your songs. What made you decide on this and what is the course or future, you think, of this kind of choice?
When you enjoy several music styles and when you wanna convey lots of emotions and ideas into a piece of music, it's always great to have at hand several instruments and sounds to be able to characterize what you’re feeling. My main concepts are based on scifi stuff, so, ‘The universe has got many faces and so does my music’ I’d say. Project Creation is an explosion of musical flavours, with Saxophone, flutes, ethnic instruments, etc... Factory of Dreams is narrower, the music is more direct, so, I mainly use bass, guitars and synthesizers… and vocals, considering it an instrument too and a phenomenal one delivered by Jessica!
I simply adore synths. It's a whole universe of possibilities, and it's the instrument that pleases me the most, even though the guitar is the one that I master mostly. Synths are more advanced than ever, amazing stuff really. The bass guitar appeared much later. I was really fascinated by synths because they were able to create such great and innovative sounds, plus reproduce several real instruments; the possibilities are endless, or almost... Mozart, Beethoven would be surrounded by Synths if they lived in our times, I’m positive of that.
- Would you say that you walk in the same music direction until now or you tend to experiment and try different things in your repertoire?
Different things, even though I will pursue, this time, the same sound that you find on Melotronical for a future Factory of Dreams album. When I started Factory of Dreams, I wanted something bordering the progressive genre and the metal genre, but never ever being just one of these genres. For me, melody is always the key and while composing, I took care of the melodic parts most of all. Melody is what people remember and the fingerprint of music, so the challenge for me was to be able to focus more on melody and on production than complex material like I was doing with Project Creation.
On my Project Creation cds, I usually work with lots of musicians, and although this is difficult to organize, it makes the music very vast and complex, bringing lots of new elements and styles to the compositions. This makes Project Creation an epic project, covering lots of different music genres and a huge story-arc.
One thing important is that I always do what I want and what comes to mind. This is why all Factory of Dreams albums are different and sound different, even though you have always constant elements, like the guitar and Jessica's vocals.
Jessica: Vocal wise I try to experiment a bit. Of course I can’t do much about my voice, it still sounds the same 😉 But trying slightly different techniques and stuff might give the vocals a different shade at times. Working with Hugo makes me learn new things about my voice for every album, which is really nice.
- Which groups would you say influenced you the most and are there any of them that still keep a hook on you, I mean, is there any group that still attracts and affects you in a positive fashion?
Hugo: Well, there are bands that I hear constantly and still enjoy, but as far as influenced or not, it's hard to say since I always do what comes to mind and rarely think of other bands while creating the music.
I always enjoyed Devin Townsend, may it be on Steve Vai's ‘Sex and Religion’ album or now with SYL and Devin Townsend band or solo. Other stuff I love includes Vangelis, the usual pop/rock from the 80s too, Def Leppard, Bryan Adams, then the prog rock stuff like Yes, Pink Floyd, and metal Ozzy Osbourne, Dream Theatre, Rush, The Gathering...
Besides this, I love sci-fi movies, and books, always have.. I was very influenced by Steven Spielberg’s movies when I was little, Close Encounters, E.T , but also Alien from Ridley Scott, The Thing by John Carpenter, etc.. I also like astronomy, mysterious things, and all this leads me to expand these ideas in musical form.
Another inspiration was indeed new age music that introduced me to synthesizers, and to great melodies, so this was a starting point to evolve and incorporate more electric instruments with the music. David Arkenstone was perhaps my biggest influence honestly. He does new age music but also symphonic rock and pretty epic stuff that is so well done.
Jessica: Probably the bands I’m most influenced by are The Gathering, Nightwish, Sarah Brightman, Enya, Björk and Within Temptation. I suppose you always get influenced by stuff you listen to and enjoy, it’s a bit unavoidable and a good thing as long as you still try to do your own thing with these influences.
- What is the general situation in Portugal’s music scene, the trends etc. Does your music cause positive reactions or approach you think?
It’s a difficult market, but what’s funny is that even though we don’t sell a lot here, I find loads of people that are a fan of Factory of Dreams., Piracy is a HUGE problem, very drastic nowadays.
This March I did an interview for the radio show Via Noctirna, live, and March was a fantastic month for metal in Portugal. We had Heaven wood woken up after a long long hiatus actually, and they release two fine new albums. Other bands like Urban Tales and Oblique Rain are almost a highlight.
Those are the names that do click. Then again, I pay more attention to the international scene, but Portugal’s Moonspell is a reference for metal/goth music, and they excel there.
The commercial radios don’t play metal music. To listen to that style, one must look into online radios, or some specific shows like the awesome Hypertensão hosted by Antonio Freitas, or Via Nocturna.
- Now please tell us, do you maintain any kind of contact with groups in Greece? Do you happen to be acquainted with Greek music scene in general or bands?
I maintain contact mostly with webzines, some newsmedia. I have contact with Nikos from http://www.greekrebels.gr
I used to know a label there too. As far as bands, no regular contact, however there are bands that I do know and enjoy such a InnerWish, prog mettalers Fragile Vastness, Wastefall and the prog power metal band Emerald Sun, for example.
- I understand that you are a 2-member group. Have you ever performed live or plan to do so in the near future?
Hugo: We’re mostly a studio based band/project, but we never know.. Right now, we’re focused on preparing the new videoclip for one of Melotronical’s tracks. That’s gonna be the highlight now. We’re trying to setup an epic set and having quite an atmospheric take on the video’s visuals and aesthetics. I think it’s gonna be awesome! We also have several interviews in store, reviews being done and promos here and there, plus compilations to attend, so let’s see how it all turns out!
We’re also concentrating efforts on promoting Factory of Dreams on several social networks, and the response has been extremely positive so far.
- Do you wish to send a message to your fans in Greece?
