Rockoverdose.gr: You're preparing a new album,"Hammer damage".Is it getting finished and when it will be released;
Kenny: After several delays, I think everything is back on track with the new record, and I look for it to be released early
next spring.
Rockoverdose.gr: How will it sound;Shall we wait a return to "old traditional" OMEN sound or something different;
Kenny: I have been trying to write everything from the heart for this one, every time I listen to outside influences it ends up being something I am ultimately disappointed in. So it should definitely sound like a traditional Omen record.
Rockoverdose.gr: The band's first 3 releases are,and will be forever,classical for the power metal music.How do you feel about this;Did you waited something like that when you were writing these albums;
Kenny: At the time we were making these records, I always felt like they were ahead of their time and maybe would not be appreciated until I was dead. I'm very happy to see that they have passed the test of time and I am still alive!
Rockoverdose.gr: Although OMEN had a very good reputation among the metal scene,next album,"Escape to nowhere",had a very different sound.How did you got the decision for that change;
Kenny: See question 2!! lol....Though I still think Paul O'Neil, who produced the record is a musical genius and I learned much from him. But due to lack of funds and support from the label, his hands were tied. To be honest, only 3 of the songs were finished before we were forced to release it. Giving the reigns of Omen to anyone one else, has always been a poor decision. It is hard to convey my vision to anyone else.
Rockoverdose.gr: What really happened and J.D.Kimball wasn't anymore the band's singer;
Kenny: This is always a tough question to answer. JD had some personal demons. I have the greatest respect for his musical abilities and together, we produced something very special. I have spent 20+ years working to get back to that level and I will not say anything to disrespect his memory.
Rockoverdose.gr: If Kimball was still in life,would you ever thought of his return in the band;
Kenny: Ironically at the time of his death, I had been searching for almost 2 years to find him and attempt to bring him back into the band. The day after his passing, I received an e-mail from his brother informing me of his battle with cancer and that he had been following the band's progress via Internet. He wanted me to know that he felt his days in Omen were a special part of his life and something he was very proud of. I always re-think that whole situation and maybe I could have done something to change how it ended, but his message helped relieve some of those feelings of quilt that I had for not doing more to help him.
Rockoverdose.gr: Although "Escape to nowhere" was the most successful commercially album of OMEN,the band disappeared for 10 years after that.What had happened;
Kenny: Actually, The Curse was the most successful record in terms of worldwide sales, but Escape to Nowhere received extensive radio play in the U.S. and resulted in the most successful Omen tour ever. At the end of that tour, I looked around on stage one night and did not see anyone or hear anything that was remotely what I felt Omen should be. I decided then, to stop it until I could get it back on track. For me, Commercial success will never be a replacement for doing music from the heart.
Rockoverdose.gr: Next step was "Reopening the gates" and with your son on the vocals but why it didn't worked up;
Kenny: Honestly, I brought my son into the band hoping to help him learn the ropes so he could be successful in his own band. I hoped to get a couple of records out of him in return, but we do not share the same passion for music.
Rockoverdose.gr: What is the current line-up and are you feeling that it'll be more stable now;
Kenny: Matt Story-vocals, Andy Haas-bass, original drummer Steve Wittig, Kenny Powell-guitars, producer, engineer, manager, etc. etc. etc......Nothing would make me happier than for this to be the final line-up for Omen, but I am a realist and given the lack of resources at this level, and the knowledge that we all have personal responsibilities, changes are always possible. After having my heart crushed many times and discovering that not everyone shares my passion for Omen, I am resolved to the fact that nothing is permanent.
If that happens, I will forge on, regardless of what it takes!
Rockoverdose.gr: Are you gonna tour for the promotion of the new album;
Kenny: My plan is to tour until we fall over in promotion of this new record!!
Rockoverdose.gr: Do you believe that you’re starting a new period for OMEN;
Kenny: Hammer Damage is the record that I have been waiting to make since 1987 as the follow-up to The Curse.
I would not call it a new period, but the continuation of the original vision.
Rockoverdose.gr: .I think that you’re often visiting Greece and you have some friends here,am I right;
Kenny: I feel that Greece is my adopted home and hope to own a second home there one day.
Some of my best friends in the world are in Greece.
I am deeply troubled by the current financial crisis there and hope it can be resolved soon.
Rockoverdose.gr: .Finally,what's your message for the Greek fans of OMEN and your friends here;
Kenny: I am busting my ass trying to get this record finished, and when it is right, I will return to my to my
adopted homeland and together we will create more of the epic times that I always experience there!!!!!

Rockoverdose.gr: Γεια σου Kenny και καλώς ήρθες στο Rockoverdose.gr
Ετοιμάζετε ένα νέο άλμπουμ, το ‘Hammer Damage’. Κοντεύει να τελειώσει και πότε θα κυκλοφορήσει;
Kenny: Μετά από πολλές καθυστερήσεις, όλα ξαναπήραν τον δρόμο τους με το νέο άλμπουμ και πιστεύω ότι θα κυκλοφορήσει νωρίς την επόμενη άνοιξη.
Rockoverdose.gr: Πως θα είναι ο ήχος του; Πρέπει να περιμένουμε το παλιό παραδοσιακό ήχο των Omen ή κάτι διαφορετικό;
Kenny: Προσπαθώ να τα γράψω όλα από καρδιάς γι’αυτό ρο άλμπουμ... κάθε φορά που επιρρεάζομαι από κάτι εξωτερικό, καταλήγει να είναι κάτι απίστευτα απογοητευτικό. Οπότε θα ηχεί οπωσδήποτε σαν ένα κλασσικό Omen άλμπουμ.
Rockoverdose.gr: Οι 3 πρώτες κυκλοφορίες της μπάντας, είναι και θα είναι για πάντα κλασσικές για το power metal. Πως νιώθεις γι’αυτό; Περίμενες κάτι τέτοιο όταν έγραφες αυτά τα άλμπουμ;
Kenny: Την περίοδο που κάναμε αυτούς τους δίσκους, πάντα ένιωθα ότι ήταν πολύ μπροστά από την εποχή τους και ότι ίσως να μην τα εκτιμούσαν πριν πεθάνω. Είμαι πολύ χαρούμενος που πέρασαν το τεστ του χρόνου και είμαι ακόμα ζωντανός!
Rockoverdose.gr: Παρόλο που οι Omen έχουν πολύ καλή φήμη στην metal σκηνή, το επόμενο άλμπουμ ‘Escape To Nowhere’, είχε πολύ διαφορετικό ήχο. Πως πήρατε αυτή την απόφαση για την αλλαγή;
Kenny: Δες την ερώτηση 2!! Χαχαχα... Παρόλα αυτά, πιστεύω ότι ο Paul O’Neil που έκανε την παραγωγή είναι μουσική ιδιοφυία και έμαθα πολλά από αυτόν. Όμως λόγω έλλειψης χρημάτων και υποστήριξης από την εταιρία, τα χέρια του ήταν δεμένα. Για να είμαι ειλικρινής, μόνο 3 κομμάτια ήταν έτοιμα πριν μας αναγκάσουν να το κυκλοφορήσουμε. Το να δώσεις τα ηνία των Omen σε άλλον, ήταν πάντα μια φτωχή απόφαση. Είναι δύσκολο να περάσω το όραμά μου σε οποιονδήποτε άλλον.
Rockoverdose.gr: Τι πραγματικά έγινε και ο J. D. Kimball δεν ήταν πια ο τραγουδιστής της μπάντας;
Kenny: Αυτή είναι πάντα μια δύσκολη ερώτηση. Ο JD, είχε κάποιους προσωπικούς δαίμονες. Τρέφω απίστευτο σεβασμό για τις μουσικές του ικανότητες και μαζί βγάλαμε κάτι πολύ ξεχωριστό. Ξόδεψα πάνω από 20 χρόνια για να ξαναφτάσω σ’αυτό το επίπεδο και δεν θα πω τίποτα που θα προσβάλλει την μνήμη του.
Rockoverdose.gr: Αν ο Kimball ήταν ακόμα εν ζωή, θα σκεφτόσουν ποτέ την επιστροφή του στη μπάντα;
Kenny: Εντελώς συμπτωματικά, την περίοδο του θανάτου του, τον έψαχνα τουλάχιστον 2 χρόνια για να προσπαθήσω να τον φέρω πίσω στη μπάντα. Την επόμενη που πέθανε, έλαβα ένα email από την μητέρα του που με ενημέρωνε για τη μάχη του με τον καρκίνο και ότι παρακολουθούσε την πρόοδο της μπάντας από το ίντερνετ. Ήθελε να ξέρω ότι οι μέρες του στους Omen, ήταν ένα μοναδικό κομμάτι της ζωής του και κάτι για το οποίο ήταν πολύ περήφανος. Πάντα σκεφτομαι την όλη κατάσταση και ίσως θα μπορούσαν να είχα κάνει κάτι για να αλλάξω το πως τελείωσε, αλλά το μήνυμά του βοήθησε να ανακουφιστούν κάποιες από τις τύψεις που είχα, επειδή δεν έκανα πιο πολλά για να τον βοηθήσω.
Rockoverdose.gr: Παρόλο που το ‘Escape To Nowhere’ ήταν το πιο εμπορικά επιτυχημένο άλμπουμ της μπάντας, εξαφανιστήκατε για 10 χρόνια μετά. Τι είχε γίνει;
Kenny: Βασικά το ‘The Curse’ είναι το πιο επιτυχημένο μας άλμπουμ σε ότι αφορά τις πωλήσεις, αλλά το ‘Escape To Nowhere’, παίχτηκε πάρα πολύ στο ραδιόφωνο στην Αμερική και συνέβαλλε στην πιο επιτυχημένη περιοδεία της μπάντας. Στο τέλος της κοίταξα τη σκηνή ένα βράδυ και δεν είδα τίποτα, ούτε άκουσα τίποτα που να ήταν έστω και λίγο αυτό που θα έπρεπε να ήταν οι Omen. Τότε αποφάσισα να σταματήσω μέχρι να ξαναβάλω τα πράγματα σε μια σειρά. Για μένα, η εμπορική επιτυχία δεν πρέπει ποτέ να είναι αντικατάσταση του να κάνεις μουσική από καρδιάς.
Rockoverdose.gr: Επόμενη στάση ήταν το ‘Reopening the Gates’ και με τον γιο σου στα φωνητικά γιατί δεν δούλεψε;
Kenny: Ειλικρινά, έφερα τον γιο μου στη μπάντα, ελπίζοντας ότι θα μάθει τα βασικά ώστε να μπορέσει να πετύχει με την δική του μπάντα. Ήλπιζα να μπορέσω να βγάλω μερικούς δίσκους μαζί του για αντάλλαγμα, αλλά δεν μοιραζόμαστε το ίδιο πάθος για τη μουσική.
Rockoverdose.gr: Ποιο είναι το lineup της μπάντας τώρα; Νιώθεις ότι είναι πιο σταθερό τώρα;
Kenny: Matt Story – φωνητικά, Andy Haas – μπάσο, ο original ντράμμερ μας Steve Wittig, Kenny Powel – κιθάρες, παραγωγή, μάνατζερ κλπ κλπ... Τίποτα δεν θα με έκανε πιο χαρούμενο, από το να είναι αυτό το τελικό lineup για τους Omen, αλλά είμαι ρεαλιστής και δεδομένης της έλλειψης παραγόντων σ’αυτό το επίπεδο και η γνώση του ότι όλοι έχουμε και προσωπικές ευθύνες και προτεραιότητες, οι αλλαγές είναι πάντα πιθανές. Μετά από πολλά ραγίσματα της καρδιάς μου και ανακαλύπτοντας ότι δεν μοιράζονται όλοι το πάθος μου για τους Omen, κατέληξα στο γεγονός ότι τίποτα δεν είναι μόνιμο.
Rockoverdose.gr: Θα περιοδεύσετε για την προώθηση του νέου άλμπουμ;
Kenny: Το σχέδιό μου είναι να κάνουμε περιοδεία μέχρι να πέσουμε κάτω από τη προώθηση του δίσκου!!!
Rockoverdose.gr: Πιστεύεις ότι ξεκινάς μια νέα περίοδο των Omen;
Kenny: Το ‘Hammer Damage’, είναι ο δίσκος που περίμενα να κάνω από το 1987, σαν διάδοχος του ‘The Curse’. Δεν θα το πω νέα περίοδο, αλλά συνέχεια στο αρχικό όραμα.
Rockoverdose.gr: Νομίζω ότι επισκέπτεσαι συχνά της Ελλάδα και ότι έχεις μερικούς φίλους εδώ, σωστά;
Kenny: Νιώθω ότι η Ελλάδα είναι το υιοθετημένο σπίτι μου και ελπίζω να καταφέρω να αγοράσω ένα σπίτι εκεί κάποια στιγμή. Κάποιοι από τους καλύτερους φίλους μου στον κόσμο είναι στην Ελλάδα. Προβληματίζομαι πάρα πολύ για την οικονομική κρίση και ελπίζω να λυθεί σύντομα.
Rockoverdose.gr: Τελειώνοντας, ποιο είναι το μήνυμα στους Έλληνες οπαδούς των Omen και τους φίλους σου εδώ;
Kenny: Σπάω τον κώλο μου, προσπαθώντας να τελειώσω τον δίσκο και όταν γίνει, θα επιστρέψω στην υιοθετημένη πατρίδα μου και μαζί θα δημιουργήσουμε την πιο επική στιγμή που πάντα ζω εκεί!!!!
