RockOverdose: Καλημέρα/Καλησπέρα Mud Spencer, ή προτιμάς το Rodolphe; Είμαι ο Νίκος. Πως είσαι αυτές τις μέρες; Πως είναι ο καιρός στο Ciremai της Ταϊλάνδης;
Mud Spencer: Γεια σου Νίκο, χαίρομαι που σε γνωρίζω. Μπορείς να με λες Rodolphe, κανένα πρόβλημα. Ο καιρός είναι ωραίος τώρα στο Cirebon της Ινδονησίας, πόλη Βορειοδυτικά της νήσου Java. Το Ciremai είναι βουνό κοντά στην πόλη.
RockOverdose: Το έχω απορία: Έχεις γεννηθεί και μεγαλώσει στην Ταϊλάνδη ή αποφάσισες να ζήσεις εκεί έπειτα από επαγγελματικό ταξίδι ή αναψυχής;
Mud Spencer: Γεννήθηκα στο Παρίσι το 1975. Πήγα στην Ινδονησία για διακοπές δύο φορές, το 2002 και 2007 και αποφάσισα να μείνω εκεί από το 2011. Προσλήφθηκα σε μία εταιρεία εξαγωγών επίπλων το 2012 όπου και δουλεύω ακόμη.
RockOverdose: Ώστε παίζεις, ηχογραφείς και μιξάρεις τα πάντα μόνος σου. Μπορείς να μου εξηγήσεις τη διαδικασία; Και εννοώ κυρίως σε πρακτικό επίπεδο. Είμαι σίγουρος ότι πολλοί μουσικοί εκεί έξω ενδιαφέρονται να μάθουν πως μπορείς να ηχογραφήσεις και να μιξάρεις τόσο καλά από το δωμάτιό σου! Το Kliwon ακούγεται πολύ “ζεστό”.
Mud Spencer: Ναι αμέ!
Η διαδικασία της μουσικής παραγωγής:
- Ηχογραφώ πρόχειρες ιδέες στο φωνογράφο, όταν έχω έμπνευση.
- Όταν έχω χρόνο, επιλέγω μία από τις ιδέες και ηχογραφώ ένα προσωρινό κανάλι κιθάρας με μετρονόμο στο Cubasis, στο iPad. Το σήμα της κιθάρας είναι καθαρό (dry) με πετάλια μόνο.
- Πάω στον υπολογιστή και γράφω πρόχειρα ντραμς, βασισμένα στο προσωρινό κανάλι της κιθάρας.
- Μεταφέρω τα ντραμς στο Cubasis, στο iPad.
- Ηχογραφώ τις κιθάρες που θα μείνουν στο κομμάτι, ακούγοντας τα ντραμς.
- Ηχογραφώ τα υπόλοιπα κανάλια. (κιθάρες/μπάσο/πλήκτρα).
- Κάνω μία πρόχειρη μίξη.
- Μεταφέρω την πρόχειρη μίξη χωρίς ντραμς στον υπολογιστή για να ελέγξω ξανά τα ντραμς και να γράψω τα τελικά.
- Μεταφέρω τα τελικά ντραμς στο iPad και σβήνω τα πρόχειρα.
- Μιξάρω, τελειοποιώ και όταν έχω σχεδόν ολοκληρώσει, το μεταφέρω σε νέο project.
- Όταν το νέο project έχει σχεδόν τελειώσει, ολοκληρώνω τη μίξη.
Ηχογραφώ στο δωμάτιό μου γιατί έχω εγκαταστήσει κλιματιστικό εκεί. Το κλίμα είναι θερμό και με υγρασία. Και μιξάρω πάνω στο βουνό κατά τη θερινή σεζόν επειδή μπορώ να το κάνω μέσω του iPad…και είναι πιο άνετα από το σκοτεινό μου δωμάτιο.
RockOverdose: Πολύ ενδιαφέρον! Τώρα που καλύψαμε κάπως το τεχνικό μέρος των πραγμάτων, τι σε εμπνέει; Τι σου δίνει κίνητρο να κάτσεις κάτω και να γράψεις;
Mud Spencer: Η δουλειά μου δεν είναι καθόλου δημιουργική, πρέπει να απασχολώ το μυαλό μου δημιουργικά για χάρη της ψυχικής μου υγείας και αγαπώ τη μουσική. Αυτό είναι αρκετό κίνητρο.
RockOverdose: ¨Χωρίς μπάντα, χωρίς ζωντανές εμφανίσεις, περισσότερος χρόνος για υπνάκους, μασάζ και χαλάρωση, χωρίς στρες¨. Αυτό είναι γραμμένο στο Bandcamp των Mud Spencer. Ήταν επιλογή σου να παίξεις όλα τα όργανα μόνος σου ή έγινε από ανάγκη; Θα ήθελες να παίξεις τη μουσική σου ζωντανά μπροστά σε κοινό ή ακόμη και σε περιοδεία;
Mud Spencer: Κάνω μουσική με αυτόν τον τρόπο επειδή δεν έχω άλλες επιλογές. Δεν υπάρχουν άλλοι μουσικοί εδώ που ζω για το συγκεκριμένο είδος αλλά ούτε και κοινό… Θα προτιμούσα να παίζω σε μπάντες που παίζουν ζωντανά.
RockOverdose: Ποιους ¨καλλιτέχνες δωματίου¨ ακούνε οι Mud Spencer και υπάρχει κάποιος που σε έκανε να πεις ¨θέλω να το κάνω αυτό!¨.
Mud Spencer: Σίγουρα υπάρχουν κι άλλοι ¨καλλιτέχνες δωματίου¨ αλλά μάλλον περισσότερο σε είδη ηλεκτρονικής μουσική.
Πάντα ακούω πολύ μουσική, τελευταία περισσότερο στο αμάξι μου στη διαδρομή προς τη δουλειά. Αγαπώ διάφορα είδη. Δεν ξέρω γιατί ποτέ δεν ξεκόλλησα από τον ήχων των 60s & 70s. Υπάρχουν πλέον πολλές και καλές μπάντες που έχουν αυτά τα 70s vibes.
RockOverdose: Θα μου άρεσε να ακούσω μια συνεργασία εσένα και του Buckethead. Είσαι fan του;
Mud Spencer: Ναι, ξέρω τον Buckethead χωρίς να είμαι fan.
RockOverdose: Συνεχίζω να το ψαχούλεμα στη σελίδα σου στο Bandcamp και διαβάζω: ¨Οι Mud Spencer είναι μια ιδέα που επιβιώνει σε ένα περιβάλλον όπου υπάρχουν μόνο καφές και καπνός ως ενισχυτικά διάθεσης.¨
Είναι αυτό ο δικός σου πόλεμος προς τα ναρκωτικά; Ακούγεται σαν να ξεκαθαρίζεις πως δεν έχουν χρησιμοποιηθεί ουσίες κατά τη δημιουργία της μουσικής σου, σε ένα είδος που είναι πολύ συνδεδεμένο με αυτές.
Mud Spencer: Ok, σίγουρα λόγω των κακών αγγλικών μου, κάτι κατάλαβες λάθος.
Μου αρέσει πολύ το χόρτο και το χασίς αλλά δεν υπάρχει δυνατότητα να κάνω χρήση εδώ στην Ινδονησία γιατί οι νόμοι είναι πολύ αυστηροί… Οπότε έχω μόνο καφέ και καπνό για ενισχυτικά διάθεσης. Μεγάλο κρίμα…!!! Θα ήμουν ο πιο ευτυχισμένος άνθρωπος στη Γη αν μπορούσα να κάνω ασφαλή χρήση εδώ.
RockOverdose: Τι επιφυλάσσει το μέλλον για τους Mud Spencer?
Mud Spencer: Στο μέλλον, πρέπει να τελειώσω το heavytrashcorepunk 60s άλμπουμ μου, μαζί με το funk άλμπουμ μου και όταν είμαι κοντά στην ολοκλήρωσή τους, να ηχογραφήσω το τρίτο Mud Spencer άλμπουμ.
RockOverdose: Από το RockOverdose, σου ευχόμαστε ο,τι καλύτερο και να συνεχίσεις να είσαι τόσο παραγωγικός και δημιουργικός. Θες να πεις κάτι τελευταίο;

We spoke with Rodolphe, the brain behind the one-man project “Mud Spencer”. His new album “Kilwon” is out now.
RockOverdose: Good day/evening Mud Spencer, or do you prefer Rodolphe? My name is Nick.
How are you these days? What’s the weather like in Ciremai Thailand?
Mud Spencer: Hi Nick, nice to meet you. You can call me Rodolphe, no problem. The weather is nice now in Cirebon Indonesia (a city in the North West of Java island). Ciremai is the mountain close to the city.
RockOverdose: Just to clear things up. Were you born and raised in Thailand or decided to live there after a trip or business?
Mud Spencer: I was born in Paris France in 1975.
I went to Indonesia for holidays 2 times in 2002 and 2007, and decided to live there since 2011.
I join rattan furniture exporter company in 2012 and still work there.
RockOverdose: So you record and mix everything by yourself. Could you walk me through your process? And I mean mostly on a technical level. I’m sure many musicians out there would be interested to know how they could record and mix that effectively in their bedroom! Kliwon sounds really warm.
Mud Spencer: Yes, sure !
The music production process :
- I record draft ideas on dictaphone, when I'm inspired.
- Once I have time, I choose one draft and record a temporary guitar track with tempo on cubasis for ipad. Guitar dry with pedals only.
- I move to PC to make a draft drums tracks based on the temporary guitar track
- I import the temporary drums tracks in cubasis ipad.
- I record now the first definitive guitar tracks based on drum tracks.
- I record the others tracks (guitars/bass/organ)
- I make a draft mix.
- I import the draft mix without drums on PC to recheck the drums tracks and make it finalised.
- I import the finalised drum track on ipad, erase the tempory tracks.
- Then I mix it, arrange it, once almost done I move to an other project.
- Once the other project is almost done, I finalise the mix.
I record in my bedroom only because I have installed Air Conditionner there, the climate is hot and wet. And mix on the mountain during dry season because I can do it using ipad..and it's more comfortable than the dark bedroom.
RockOverdose: Now that we somewhat covered the technical aspect of things, what inspires you? What motivates you to sit down and write?
Mud Spencer: My job is not creative at all, I need my brain to focus on creativity for my mental health, and I love music, so that's enough for motivation.
RockOverdose: “No band, no live performances, more time for naps, massages, and relaxation, no stress”. This is written on Mud Spencer’s Bandcamp page. So was it a choice to play all instruments yourself or a necessity? Would you be interested in playing your music in front of a crowd and even tour?
Mud Spencer: I make music like this because I don't have other choices. There are no musicians here where I live for that kind of music and no public..I would prefer for far playing in bands and play live..
RockOverdose: Which “bedroom artists” does Mud Spencer listen to and was there someone that made you say “I want to do this too!”?
Mud Spencer: There are surely others "bedroom" musicians but perhaps more on electronic genres.
I always listen a lot of music, now more in my car during the trip to go at work . I love a lot of different styles, I don't know why I never unhooked from 60s and 70s sound..There are now also a lot of very good bands using 70s sound vibes.
RockOverdose: Ι’d love to hear a collab with you and Buckethead. Are you a fan of his?
Mud Spencer: Yes I like Buckethead without being a fan.
RockOverdose: I keep digging on your Bandcamp page and read “Mud Spencer is a concept to survive in an environment where there are only coffee and tobacco as mood enhancer”.
Ιs this your war on drugs? Sounds like you want to be clear that no other substances were used in the making of your music, in a genre that is very much associated with them.
Mud Spencer: Ok, surely because of my bad English you misunderstood..
I really like weed and hashish, but that's not possible at all to use it here in Indonesia, the law is ultra strict..So, I have only coffee and tobacco as mood enhancer..Such a pity..!!!! I would be the happiest men on earth if I can use it safe here.
RockOverdose: So what does the future hold for Mud Spencer?
Mud Spencer: In the future, I have to finished my heavytrashcorepunk 60s album, together with my funk album and when closed to be finished, record the third Mud Spencer album.
Try to reduce tobacco..
