RED FANG on RockOverdose: “Our new album is aggressive with a little more horror and gloom thrown in!’

RockOverdose had the chance to speak with RED FANG's  quitarist Bryan Giles on their new album “Arrows”, which is going to be released on the 4th of June via Relapse Records.

Enjoy!

RockOverdose: Hi Bryan and welcome to Rock Overdose!

Bryan Giles (Red Fang): Howdy!

RockOverdose: Let’s start from few band details so Greek audience may get to know you a little better. How did you originally meet and formed the band?

Bryan Giles (Red Fang): We all met through our local music scene here in our home of Portland Oregon.  John, David and I were in a band together for several years before we started Red Fang called Party Time so we were pretty accustomed to each other, and Aaron played in bands we shared the stage with many times so it was a natural fit.

RockOverdose: How did you end up naming the band “Red Fang?

Bryan Giles (Red Fang): We didn’t put too much thought into the name.  A good band with a terrible name is still good!

RockOverdose: Almost 5 years after the previous album and a pandemic in the middle how is things within the band?

Bryan Giles (Red Fang): We are just waking up from a year of hibernation like the rest of the world.  It’s very exciting to be active again after all the down time.  I spent the year learning to do home recordings, so I’m happy to say that I came through the pandemic with a new skill that will be useful to Red Fang going forward.

RockOverdose: How did you spend your time during the lock down?

Bryan Giles (Red Fang): Ragin’ through the contagion!  If that doesn’t translate, I drank a lot of coffee and kept the couch from floating away.

RockOverdose: “Arrows” is following 2016 “Only Ghosts”. What differences shall we expect in band’s music?

Bryan Giles (Red Fang): I’m very happy with the new record, and glad that we continue to evolve in our song writing.  It’s still as aggressive as previous albums, with a little more horror and gloom thrown in for good measure.

RockOverdose: May you please tell us few words about the new album? Thematology…inspiration…

Bryan Giles (Red Fang): I continue to use the band as a vehicle to release my hostility in a way that doesn’t put anyone in the hospital.  Rock and roll is great for that!

RockOverdose: Did you collaborated with Ross Robinson or you changed producer for the new album.

Bryan Giles (Red Fang): Our first two albums on Relapse records were produced by Chris Funk of the Decemberists.  It seemed like an odd pairing initially, but he has a great music sensibility which crosses genres, so on Arrows we were glad he was down to make another one with us!

RockOverdose: Your music is heavy and dark, but your videos are extremely sarcastic and funny. How can you combine this?

Bryan Giles (Red Fang): You can’t have darkness without the light.  The humor in our videos is a natural expression of our day to day personalities.  We take our music very seriously, but I don’t think anyone needs to see us flex our muscles.. I’d have to go to the gym!!

RockOverdose: Did you manage to arrange any live yet?

Bryan Giles (Red Fang): Yes, and we’re all super excited to hit the road!  We are doing a month long tour in the States mid-October to mid-November.  It’s been a year and a half since we got on a stage.  WAAAYYY too long!

RockOverdose: Is there any near future plans for the band?

Bryan Giles (Red Fang): Just kicking off the rust and getting back at it!

RockOverdose: Are you aware of any Greek band?

Bryan Giles (Red Fang): There’s a really good band from Philidelphia called Stinking Lizavetta that features two Greek brothers.  They’re sort of a mix between Black Sabbath, Black Flag, and Santana.  Opa!!

RockOverdose: What are your memories from Greece?

Bryan Giles (Red Fang): I remember having really good seafood, and the vibe of the people being really positive and friendly.  We got to swim in the Aegean and play a show in the same day!

RockOverdose: Anything you want to say to your fans?

Bryan Giles (Red Fang): Welcome back to “normal”!  Let’s make it even better than the old “normal”!!

RockOverdose: Thank you very much for your time, I wish you the best!

Bryan Giles (Red Fang): Thanks so much!  See you out there on the dusty trail!!!
