1) So, what are Spiritual Beggars doing these days?

Hi there. Apart from being busy with our other commitments, I think all of us are looking forward to this summer’s festival appearances. It’ll be the first time in more than 10 years we’re doing festival dates through Europe!

2) What about your new live cd? Tell us about this recording experience in Japan.

We played a festival in Japan called Loudpark in October last year which is a pretty big Metal Event. We recorded 2 cool shows and we had a good vibe going so it was decided to make the recordings official. The initial thought was for this to be a Japan only release and to coincide with a headlining tour of Japan in March, unfortunately we had to postpone the tour due to the tragic events with the earthquake and tsunami. The album is called Return To Live, Loudpark 2010 and will probably be released over here this year as well. It’s a good performance and a good representation of what we sound like nowadays I think.

3) The new vocalist Apollo was a surprise for Greece and Cyprus and not only. Tell us about this choice.

Apollo’s been a friend of the band for many years since he’s living in the same area as Ludwig and Mike in Sweden. I believe it was Ludwig’s suggestion to try him out as they had been playing together in bar bands doing classic rock stuff. Apollo’s no stranger to ‘Beggars as he’s seen us live many times through the years, which meant he knew what the band was all about before going in to the rehearsal room. We’re also kind of the same age and have grown up listening to the same bands so it was a pretty easy choice I’d say.

4) What have we to expect from you in the future?

We’ll keep on doing what we do when our schedules allow it. It’s been quite a while since we were out playing live and if possible we’re gonna do more of that. Sometime it would be fun to do another album as well but first up are these summer dates.

5) How will the sound of the next album be? Can you give us some information?

Maybe it will be filled with heavy rock, lots of guitar solos, rockin’ vocals, groovy keys and a swinging rhythm section, how about that!?:-)
We haven’t rehearsed any new stuff as the latest album Return To Zero is still new music to us and that’s what we’re concentrating on at the moment. We don’t talk that much about what a Beggars album’s gonna be as all of us know why we’re doing this band, it’s just a celebration of our love for heavy rock so a qualified guess would be more of that on the next recording.

6) “Return To Zero” was a different album than the previous one. This occured because of the new vocals or is it a new era for Spiritual Beggars and your sound?

I think both the production and the vocals give Return To Zero a new flavor, RTZ has more of a slick production than before and Apollo’s vocals are maybe a little bit more melodic than previous singers but I still think we’re dealing with the same balls out heavy rock that’s always been the Beggars trademark sound and it would be pretty sad if it came out exactly the same as before.

7) You are going to visit Cyprus for the MetaLmorphosiS Open Air Festival. Could you give us more info about this? What should the fans expect from your live show? Are there going to be any surprises?

It’s the first time we get to play Cyprus and we’re of course looking forward to this! We’ve always had a good time playing Greece and I’m sure this will be just as fun. You can expect a high energy rock’n roll show with songs pulled from the majority of our albums. Mike and Sharlee will also play with Arch Enemy so they’ll have a busy day!

8) Leave a message for your fans out there

It’ll be a fun day I’m sure, having spent a couple of vacations there in the past I know that Cyprus has lots of good things to offer and I’m sure fans of heavy rock and metal won’t disappoint, cheers and see you soon!

Thanks & take care! /Per Wiberg
