Ο Ζήσης Πετκανάς συνομίλησε πρόσφατα με την ES Pitcher τη τραγουδίστρια και κιθαρίστρια του female-fronted indie rock συγκροτήματος των THE NEW UP.

Γυναικεία φωνητικά και indie rock μαζί με ποπ και ψυχεδελικά στοιχεία.

-Δουλεύετε πάνω σε κάποιο νέο υλικό?
Ναι, έχουμε αρκετά νέα τραγούδια με τα οποία είμαστε αρκετά ενθουσιασμένοι.
-Ποιά τα σχέδια σας σχετικά με περιοδίες το 2010-2011, και σχεδιάζετε να περάσετε και απ’την Ελλάδα?
Αυτή την στιγμή δουλεύουμε πάνω σε ημερομηνίες για την Ευρώπη και το ΗΒ για την αρχή του καλοκαιριού του 2011, οπότε μείνετε συντονισμένοι στο website για πληροφορίες καθώς κλείνουν οι ημερομηνίες. Δεν βλέπουμε την ώρα να παίξουμε στην Ελλάδα, αισθανόμαστε πως η μουσική μας και το κοινό εκεί θα συνδέονταν τέλεια.

-Σας αρέσει να ακούτε διαφορετικά είδη μουσικής?
Όλοι μας ακούμε ένα πολύ πλατύ φάσμα μουσικών ειδών. Κάποια απο΄τα πιό προφανή αγαπημένα μας είναι οι Radiohead, Talking Heads, The Beatles, Queens of the Stone Age, Pink Floyd, Massive Attack, Led Zeppelin, Ween, The Pixies, Tom Waits και η PJ Harvey, όπως και σε όλους μας αρέσει η παλιά hip-hop, κλασσική μουσική, jazz (ο Coltrane είναι μία μεγάλη έμπνευση για όλους μας), metal (ειδικά κλασσικό metal) κ.τ.λ.. και είτε το πιστεύεις είτε όχι, σε όλους μας αρέσει οι κωμωδίες και τις ακούμε όταν βρισκόμαστε στον δρόμο, για έμπνευση.
-Θα’θελες να αφήσεις ένα μήνυμα στους αναγνώστες?
Ναι, προς τους fans της μουσικής παντού: είναι πολύ σημαντικό να προσπαθείτε να ανακαλύπτετε καινούρια μουσική που να σας ενδιαφέρει. Είναι κάποιοι τύποι της μουσικής «βιομηχανίας» εκεί έξω που θα ήθελαν απλά όλοι μας να ακούμε την μουσική που αυτοί ασταμάτητα μας ταϊζουν. Το πρόβλημα με αυτό φυσικά είναι πως έτσι αποθαρύνουμε την ποικιλομορφία στην μουσική και μειώνουμε συνολικά την ποιότητα της μουσικής. Η μουσική δεν είναι σαν τα άλλα προιόντα, δεν μπορείς απλά να την παράγεις μαζικά και να είσαι άνετος πως έχεις παράξει το καλύτερο. Το καλύτερο χαρακτηριστικό της τέχνης γενικότερα, είναι πως αντιπροσωπεύει άπειρες ξεχωριστές οπτικές. Οπότε, ψάξτε να δείτε μπάντες που ποτέ δεν έχετε ξανακούσει, ή σερφάρετε το internet για συγκροτήματα που παίζουν είδη που ήδη σας αρέσουν.

-Are you working on a new matterial?
Yes, we have several new songs that we are very excited about.
-What are your tour plans for 2010-2011 and you are planning to visit Greece?
We are currently working on EU and UK dates for early summer 2011, so stay tuned to the website for information as dates are confirmed. We can't wait to play in Greece as we feel that our music would really connect with people there.

-Do you like listening to different kinds of music?
We all listen to a very diverse range of music. Some of the more obvious favorites are Radiohead, Talking Heads, The Beatles, Queens of the Stone Age, Pink Floyd, Massive Attack, Led Zeppelin, Ween, The Pixies, Tom Waits and PJ Harvey, but we all like old hip-hop, classical music, jazz (Coltrane is a big inspiration to us all), metal (especially classic metal), etc. and believe it or not we all love comedy and listen to it when we're on the road for inspiration
-Would you like to leave a message to the readers of this interview?
Yes, to music fans everywhere: it's so important to keep trying to find new music that you're interested in. There are some music industry folks out there that would loving nothing more than for everyone to just keep ingesting the music that they are spoon-feeding them. The problem with this is that it discourages diversity in music and actually brings down the quality of music overall. Music isn't like other products, you can't just mass market it and feel comfortable that you are getting the best product. The best quality about art in general is that it represents infinitely unique points of view. So get out there and see bands you've never heard of or surf the web for bands that are in genres that you already like.
