Την Κυριακή 6 Νοεμβρίου 2011 θα πραγματοποιηθεί μια «επική» συναυλία, καθώς οι βετεράνοι Epic/Power Metall VIRGIN STEELE επιστρέφουν στη χώρα μας για μια και μοναδική εμφάνιση στο Κύτταρο, με support τους δικούς μας Dexter Ward!!!
Με την ευκαιρία λοιπόν αυτής της επίσκεψης, ο Αντώνης "Jk" Κατσαρός για λογαριασμό του Rock Overdose, συνάντησε τον frontman της μπάντας David DeFeis, ο οποίος ήταν ευδιάθετος και έτοιμος να απαντήσει σε όλες τις ερωτήσεις!
Παρακάτω ακολουθεί η συνέντευξη στα Αγγλικα, και αμέσως παρακάτωστα Ελληνικά...
Hi, and welcome to Rockoverdose.gr
Rockoverdose.gr: In November you will release Age of Consent. What are the differences from the original?
DeFeis: It contains an extra disc of new music. There are new songs that I"ve just written, plus various somewhat obscure covers that I have taken the liberty to re-compose. Nothing was meant to be an exact recreation of the original versions. These covers have all been revamped. As regards the albums original program, I have re-mastered all those tracks from the original source tapes. The artwork has been expanded, and there are pretty extensive new liner notes.
Rockoverdose.gr: Are there any plans after the album and your live dates?
DeFeis: No. Not at this time. The next thing released will probably be the re-issue of LIFE AMNONG THE RUINS.
Rockoverdose.gr: How was the first Virgin Steele tour in S. Africa?
DeFeis: We actually never played in South Africa. We played now for the second time this year in South America. It was absolutely over the top! The people down there are very enthusiastic about what we are doing. They are really into the entire catalogue, especially the latest releases. It was a really nice experience.
Rockoverdose.gr: Correct me if I am wrong but this was the first time that you had a keyboard player on stage?
DeFeis: Well actually I have been playing keyboards live onstage since the band began. However, this year on a few dates we had hired an outside keyboard player. This was an experiment. It freed me up to run around onstage more, and it was quite nice, but I have returned to playing the keyboards live onstage once again, as both the band and I missed that side of what I do. The person we had with us is a long time friend of mine, Lynn Terremoto. She has performed with me onstage in my weird side project CARNIVAL OF SOULS. So she was no real stranger to me, or the rest of us.it was very easy to incorporate her into the ranks for those few gigs.
Rockoverdose.gr: A lot of your albums are concepts. Is it harder to release a concept album than a normal one?
DeFeis: They both have their difficulties. With a concept album the main task is to make everything tie in, in a coherent manner.With a "normal" album.you still have the issue of continuity, but from a different angle. Either way the main thing is to make a collection of songs that is strong, and that flows together as an album, rather than as a collection of unrelated material.
Rockoverdose.gr: Where do you get information about a concept album?
DeFeis: It depends on what the concept is. If it is something like THE MARRIAGE OF HREAVEN & HELL/INVICTUS albums, then it is largely from my own head..I am conceptualizing things from my own life in there..If it is THE HOUSE OF ATREUS..then it is a bit different. For that one I went back and read all the myths again, and kept the main tale in my head when composing. I knew the story intimately, so I was then able to adapt and change or transform it at will, to present the vision I had in mind.
Rockoverdose.gr: What do you see in the future of music industry? Are there any new bands that can have a breakthrough and will be considered classic in 15-20 years?
DeFeis: I don"t know that I do see much of a future for the "industry" per se. But there will always be a future for Music.as long as there are creative, passionate people born.the Music will survive. I receive CD"s from all sorts of new bands all the time, and there are a lot of new great players out there.
Rockoverdose.gr: Do you listen to any new bands?
DeFeis: Yes, I listen to the albums I receive from people along the way. Whenever we do a concert, I end up coming home with all sorts of records from new bands that I meet out there. I do try to listen to them all.
Rockoverdose.gr: Virgin Steele exist for about 30 years. What keeps you going on?
DeFeis: The passion for the Music, the hunger to create something new.I exist to immortalize in sound and word the way the world appears to me. That is the fuel that personally drives me. The band & I still have that hunger to live inside the Music and become one with it.
Rockoverdose.gr: What advices would you give to any new band?
DeFeis: Be in it for the Music itself.not money. Don"t be concerned about what other people think about your approach. Stay true to your vision, and be passionate about what you are doing.

Rockoverdose.gr: Next month you will be in Athens for a show. Should we expect something special?
DeFeis: Yes we will be there! We are really looking forward to it. I think the last visit was in 2004.so it has been quite awhile. We hope to play a show that will feature a bit of something from most of the various eras of the band.
Rockoverdose.gr: Would you like to say something for the Greek fans?

Rockoverdose.gr: Το Νοέμβριο θα κυκλοφορήσετε το "Age of Consent". Τι διαφορές θα έχει από την αρχική κυκλοφορία;
DeFeis: Θα περιέχει έναν έξτρα δίσκο με νέα μουσική. Περιέχει νέα κομμάτια που έγραψα πολύ πρόσφατα όπως επίσης και μερικές διασκευές τις οποίες άλλαξα αρκετά. Τίποτα δεν είναι μία απλή αντιγραφή των αυθεντικών εκτελέσεων. Όσο αφορά τον κανονικό δίσκο δουλέψαμε ξανά τα τραγούδια από τις αρχικές ηχογραφήσεις για καλύτερο ήχο. Επίσης θα υπάρχει ανανεωμένο εξώφυλλο και πολλές νέες σημειώσεις.
Rockoverdose.gr: Υπάρχει κάποια πλάνα μετά τον δίσκο και την περιοδεία;
DeFeis: Προς το παρόν όχι. Το επόμενο που θα κυκλοφορήσουμε θα είναι μάλλον η επανέκδοση του "Life Among The Ruins".
Rockoverdose.gr: Πως ήταν η περιοδεία σας στην Λατινική Αμερική;
DeFeis: Ήταν πραγματικά πάρα πολύ καλή! Οι άνθρωποι εκεί είναι πολύ ενθουσιώδεις. Ξέρουν ότι έχουμε κυκλοφορήσει και ειδικά τις νέες κυκλοφορίες. Ήταν πραγματικά μία πολύ ωραία εμπειρία.
Rockoverdose.gr: Διόρθωσε με αν κάνω λάθος αλλά είναι η πρώτη φορά που έχετε και ξεχωριστό πληκτρά μαζί σας.
DeFeis: Ναι. Από την αρχή τα πλήκτρα τα έπαιζα εγώ. Ωστόσο φέτος αποφασίσαμε να προσλάβουμε έναν. Ήταν ένα πείραμα. Έτσι μπορούσα να κινούμε περισσότερο πάνω στην σκηνή. Αλλά επιστρέψαμε και πάλι όπως ήμασταν πριν γιατί και η μπάντα και εγώ νιώθαμε ότι μας έλειπε εκείνη η πλευρά. Το άτομο που είχαμε μαζί μας, ήταν η εδώ και πολλά χρόνια φίλη μας, Lynn Terremoto. Ήταν μαζί μου στο project Carnival Of Souls. Δεν ήταν κάποια άγνωστη σε μένα ή στην υπόλοιπη μπάντα. Ήταν πολύ εύκολη η συνεργασία μας για εκείνες τις συναυλίες.
Rockoverdose.gr: Αρκετοί δίσκοι σας είναι θεματικοί. Είναι πιο δύσκολο να κυκλοφορήσεις έναν τέτοιο δίσκο;
DeFeis: Και τα δύο είδη έχουν τις δυσκολίες τους. Σε έναν θεματικό δίσκο το κυριότερο που πρέπει να κάνεις είναι να κρατήσεις τα πάντα δεμένα μεταξύ τους. Σε έναν "κανονικό" δίσκο, αν και πάλι έχεις το θέμα της συνέχειας, είναι πιο απλά τα πράγματα. Αλλά όπως και να έχει το θέμα είναι να γράψεις μερικά κομμάτια τα οποία θα δένουν μεταξύ τους.
Rockoverdose.gr: Από πού αντλείς πληροφορίες για τους concept δίσκους;
DeFeis: Εξαρτάται από το θέμα. Εάν είναι κάτι σαν τα "The Marriage Of Heaven And Hell" και "Invictus", τότε κυρίως τα πάντα βγαίνουν από το μυαλό μου και από την ζωή μου. Εάν μιλάμε για το "The House Of Atreus" τότε τα πράγματα είναι λίγο διαφορετικά. Για το συγκεκριμένο έπρεπε να διαβάσω ξανά όλους τους μύθους και να έχω την κυρίως ιστορία συνεχώς στο μυαλό μου. Ήξερα πολύ καλά την όλη ιστορία και έτσι ήταν σχετικά εύκολο να την προσαρμόσω και να την αλλάξω σε αυτό που είχα στο μυαλό μου.
Rockoverdose.gr: Ποιο νομίζεις ότι είναι το μέλλον της μουσικής βιομηχανίας; Υπάρχουν συγκροτήματα που θα μπορούμε να τα αποκαλούμε κλασσικά σε 15-20 χρόνια;
DeFeis: Δεν ξέρω αν βλέπω μέλλον στην μουσική βιομηχανία. Βλέπω όμως μέλλον στην μουσική. Όσο υπάρχουν δημιουργικά και παθιασμένα άτομα, η μουσική θα υπάρχει. Λαμβάνω δίσκους από πολλές νέες μπάντες συνέχεια και υπάρχουν πολλοί εξαιρετικοί μουσικοί εκεί έξω.
Rockoverdose.gr: Ακούς νέες μπάντες;
DeFeis: Ναι ακούω τους δίσκους που μου δίνουν διάφορα άτομα. Κάθε φορά που δίνουμε συναυλίες, καταλήγω να γυρνάω σπίτι με πάρα πολλά νέα cd. Προσπαθώ να τα ακούσω όλα.
Rockoverdose.gr: Οι Virgin Steele υπάρχουν για περίπου 30 χρόνια. Τι σας κάνει να συνεχίζετε;
DeFeis: Το πάθος για την μουσική, η δίψα για την δημιουργία νέων πραγμάτων. Υπάρχω για να κάνω αθάνατο τον κόσμο όπως τον βλέπω εγώ μέσα από την μουσική μου και τους στίχους. Αυτό είναι που μας κάνει και συνεχίζουμε. Η μπάντα και εγώ ακόμα έχουμε αυτή την δίψα να ζούμε την μουσική και να γινόμαστε ένα με αυτήν.
Rockoverdose.gr: Τι συμβουλές θα έδινες σε ένα νέο συγκρότημα;
DeFeis: Ότι κάνουν να το κάνουν για την μουσική και όχι για τα λεφτά. Να μη τους νοιάζει τι σκέφτονται οι άλλοι για την προσέγγιση τους. Να μείνουν πιστοί στο όραμα τους και πάντα να είναι παθιασμένοι σε ότι κάνουν.
Rockoverdose.gr: Σε λίγες μέρες θα έρθετε στην Ελλάδα για μία συναυλία. Να περιμένουμε κάτι ιδιαίτερο;
DeFeis: Ναι θα είμαστε εκεί! Πραγματικά ανυπομονούμε να έρθουμε. Νομίζω ότι τελευταία φορά ήρθαμε το 2004. Έχει περάσει αρκετός καιρός. Ελπίζουμε ότι θα δώσουμε μία συναυλία που θα έχει λίγο απ" όλες τις περιόδους μας.
Rockoverdose.gr: Θα ήθελες να πεις κάτι στους Έλληνες οπαδούς;
DeFeis: ΜΑ ΤΟΥΣ ΘΕΟΥΣ ΚΑΙ ΤΙΣ ΘΕΕΣ!
