WEEDPECKER on Rock Overdose: ‘Playing music in front of people is amazing, it’s like a drug’

Weedpecker is a new psychedelic stoner band from Warsaw, Poland, which started playing in 2011 and since then they released two great albums. If you love this kind of music you should check this band immediately. Rock Overdose had a chance to talk with Wyro (guitar, vocal) read the interview for more details.

Rock Overdose: Hello guys and welcome to rock overdose, how are you ?

Wyro: cool thanks!

WEEDPECKER 1

Rock Overdose: Can you tell us a few words about the band, how you met and start playing together ?

Wyro: I started the band in 2011 with my younger brother Bartek. He was just a kid back then, but his guitar skills were far beyond what most guys my age could do. We've been trying to find a drummer for like six months – finally Falon, who played for Belzebong at the time, contacted us. We sent him our demos and we set up a rehearsal in no time, things triggered on the spot and we were in a band together, just like that. My brother in law, Adam, who also played in a number of Warsaw bands, was supposed to join in as a bass player but things didn't really work out. We recorded a new demo with Falon and started looking for the bassist – that is how we met Jose, a Spanish dude living in Warsaw for several years already. He has had experience playing in extreme metal bands, but that didn't really matter – we liked him from day one, and I think the feeling was mutual. That is basically how the line-up for our first album came to be. Jose was later replaced by Mroku – guitar player for Dopelord and a good friend of ours.

WEEDPECKER 2

Rock Overdose: Who came up with the idea about the name of the band ?

Wyro: The name of the band was supposed to be a crossover between a woodpecker and weed, like a bird who picks on weed, you know? Later we found out that in US slang “pecker” goes for “penis”. Several times we would come across comments or massages in the likes of “what the fuck dudes, that's a sick name!”. Well, I guess it's a classic definition of pothed misunderstanding!

Rock Overdose: How you would describe your sound ?

Wyro: Fat, dirty, psycho dreamy

Rock Overdose: Which are your main influences ?

Wyro: Rush, Black Sabbath, Colour Haze, Elder, Causa Sui, Goatsnake + lots of psychodelic stuff like Pond, Wand, Temples, Ty Segall, Tame Impala.

Rock Overdose: You have released 2 full length albums which were perfect. How was the experience of recording process ?

Wyro: Very different, I'd say. Our first album we recorded in a small rehearsal room we rented at the time, with help from our friend Adam Ziółkowski. It was really hard, we didn't have a lot of gear to choose from, the sound in the room wasn't so great either. All we could do was try and make the songs good enough to make up for the lack of sound quality. As for the second album, we already had some money saved up, so we could afford a real studio – we chose Satanic Audio. Needles to say, the comfort was far superior to what we had experienced before. Nevertheless, I think both these sessions taught us a lot and we hope to put that knowledge to use while composing for – and recording – our third piece.

WEEDPECKER 3

Rock Overdose: Do you have any plans to record a new album or it's too early from the last one ?

Wyro: We hope to record our third album this fall.

Rock Overdose: What you enjoy most, writing music or touring around the world ?

Wyro: Well we're not really at the point where we could travel and play all over the world, but still – playing music in front of people is amazing, it's like a drug, it takes you places you didn't think were there in the first place. Studio sessions are often more of a blood-and-tears kind of thing, but I still like it. I'll take it over any other job.

Rock Overdose: What's your plans for 2016 ?

Wyro: We plan on embarking on a tour with our friends from Dopelord – we hope to announce the dates soon. A few summer festivals are on the agenda as well, but unfortunately I can't say any more at this point. And then there's the studio, obviously, which as I mentioned before, we plan to book for this fall.

Rock Overdose: Weedpecker never played live in Greece. Is there any chance to see you soon here ?

Wyro: Yes, we are currently discussing details for our gig in Greece.

Rock Overdose: Thank you guys for the interview, wish you all the best. Do you have any message for your fans ?

Wyro: Peace Brothers & Sisters.
