Το Rock Overdose και ο Παναγιώτης Μπούγαλης πάει μέχρι την Virgina στις Ηνωμένες Πολιτείες για να μιλήσει με τον κιθαρίστα και βασικό συνθέτη της μπάντας,Tom Phillips,εφ όλης της ύλης, για προσωπικές στιγμές του και τις αναμνήσεις του από την εμφάνισή τους στο Up The Hammers festival στην Αθήνα. Hello Tom!Welcome to Rockoverdose.gr.
1. I know that you"ve just returned from an appearance in ProgPower festival. What are your impressions from this;
Tom: ProgPower USA is without a doubt the most professional and organized event that we’ve ever participated in…and that says something considering the precision of our mates in Germany that have done an amazing job at festivals such as Hammer Of Doom or Doom Shall Rise for example…not to mention the quality of our booking agency Rock The Nation. Despite the fact that these are all incredible examples of how to “do things right”, the fact is ProgPower USA is even above and beyond all of them; every single detail was scrutinized well in advance, and everything from the stage crew on through the coordinators of the signing sessions and even the catering was like nothing we’d ever experienced before. Then there’s the audience…who truly were an anomaly in the United States; everyone was extremely friendly, open-minded, passionate…the closest thing I’ve ever experienced in the USA to an EU event, period. Further, there were actually sponsors who paid $500 each just to have intimate access to the band…which was mind-blowing. Even the venue was inspired, helpful, and gracious…which is even more jawdropping considering the sheer number of festering dives littering the States! As far as the bands that we shared the stage with…every damn one of them was incredible in their own right…amazing musicians and vocalists….Chity (Red Circuit/ex-Firewind), Rob Tiranti (Rob Tyrant of Labyrinth), Warrel Dane…for myself though, the bands that stole the show were Ihsahn (ex-Emperor, backed by his nephew’s band Leprous) and our labelmates Forbidden (a rare performance with Gene Hoglan on drums!)…but everyone really killed it. It was truly an honor to participate in such a special event and I can only hope that we have an opportunity in the future to be a part of a future edition.
2. You"ve said that, after the fest, they’ll be changes in the group. Can you tell us something more;
Tom: The scenario is simply that after the whirlwind of activity over the last three years, some members are needing to take some time off to spend with their families and focus on their personal circumstances; it is not a catastrophic scenario…and we’re all family really…it’s simply that some individuals will be sitting “on the sidelines” for a couple years while WHW continues onward. There’s no drama; no one is getting fired or quitting…it’s just a matter of people needing to address and invest in that which they have outside of the band. I wish I could be more specific, but the official press releases have not been issued yet…however what I CAN tell you is that the core voices and writers of WHW will be carrying on regardless, with the blessings of those who have elected to focus on other things…but they’ll be back ultimately…there’s just no vacation or break from WHW for the rest of us; too much to express and a vast quantity of NEW music to deliver. The bottom line is after 22 years, there’s no end in sight now, and I’ve given up trying to pretend I don’t need to continue doing this (for my own sanctity and sanity).
3. Through the years, there were many changes in the line-up. Are you looking always for perfection or it"s just a matter of reasons;
Tom: You know, actually the line-up has been fairly stable since 1998 apart from a revolving door of drummers and the addition of both Rain Irving (on lead vocals) and Jason Lingle (on keyboards). The vast majority of the absurd number of line-up changes transpired early on; we started WHW in the first year of high school as a group of friends…inevitably, there would be those that continued to develop and believe in this as well as those who would become distracted by other musical styles, university, women, addictions, etc. Piecing together the current line-up was a painstaking process that took many years, but I do believe it is the greatest of all WHW configurations and we’d be hard-pressed to pull something else together that rivaled what we have now. This is in no way a criticism of past members; every new line-up took things to another level and some amazing musicians have passed through the ranks over the years…but in essence, right now we have the “golden” line-up…something so special that it is hard to imagine WHW continuing onward without every last member involved…though, given our history, we always move upwards and onwards, even when it seems impossible. In the end, the fact is there are benefits and deficits any way you perceive it, and while there may be those who are technically more capable, there are non-musical aspects that are impossible to replace; again, WHW is very much a family…literally and figuratively; Michelle and Trevor are husband and wife, Scott is Michelle’s brother…the four of us went to high school together, etc.
4. Let"s get back to the first days of WHW.Is it true that the name of the band came up from a letter of an ex-girlfriend of you;
Tom: It’s something like that; I received a letter from the one who at the time meant more than anyone or anything to me…on our anniversary…it was a brilliant autumn day, not a cloud in the sky…and I tore into the envelope at the mailbox….what I read absolutely devastated me; she’s moved over the previous summer and because of various circumstances were forced worlds apart (parents, etc.). What I read leveled me…gutted me…she was my best friend and our love was one of purity and innocence; the only words that I can recall to this day are some that might also be familiar to our fans: “I’m not the only one in this world” and “I’ve just given up”…anyway, as I read this, I was taken to my knees with overwhelming grief, in the street in front of my parents’ house. There was no “fighting back” the tears…I wept uncontrollably…and while this transpired, the wind suddenly was enraged, the sky turned black, and the heavens unleashed a deluge…as if empathetic to my despair…heaven literally wept. Since then, it has rained during every major event in the history of WHW; sudden downpours during practices, violent thunderstorms at the completion of mastering sessions, more of the same during significant concerts…it’s quite strange and mystical, but the absolute truth.
5. Can you tell us about the way you"re composing music; How much your life"s facts influence your composing;
Tom: Everything we do comes from the heart; there is never a premise or premeditation…the music (and lyrics) comes when it does…as if we are “channels” of something deeper, greater. Often a profound real-life event precedes this “channeling” and there really is no rhyme nor reason beyond this…the music comes when it does…from the deepest heart of hearts…it is always pure, sincere emotion…nothing is ever contrived, forced, or planned. Ultimately, everything we do is based entirely upon real events, relationships, circumstances…it is the premise of WHW and all I know how to do. That being said, once the exoskeleton of a composition has revealed itself, it is only then that I will put pen to paper to flesh out the final arrangements…otherwise, it is 100% organic and unquestionably from the heart and soul.
6. The past years, WHW"s music was much more depressive and dark. Nowadays I feel there is a little bit change in the mood. Are the things getting better in your life and that has to come and with your musical approach;
Tom: I would not go so far as to say that the recent releases are any less depressive and dark….musically, they are more diverse, but in terms of lyrical content, they’re as bleak as ever; while we do evolve as individuals and have new experiences, in the end, WHW is a vehicle for all the things that did not go according to plan, ambition, or heart. I think the thing that confounds most people is the fact that we are not afraid to incorporate major key melodies and progressions within the music (as if we had a choice, being that we are merely “channels”….); what many people don’t realize is the power of contrast…; how can you define truly black without white? Heaven without Hell? I suppose that somewhere within all of this is the true nature of WHW….the unthinkable juxtaposition of light against the dark.
7. What are your music influences; What kind of music do you like to listen;
Tom: We listen to such a wide array of music…it would eat up all the bandwidth on your site to articulate our full listening spectrum! But at the core of WHW, it has always revolved around the premise of fusing John Arch-era Fates Warning with early Candlemass and Kitaro (at the core). There were always elements of Sabbath, Slayer, Rush, Holy Terror, Voivod, Bach, and Coroner (and 50,000 other influences), but the aforementioned trifecta has always been where we came from. Individually we listen to everything from Classical to Jazz to Prog – and just about anything that isn’t plastic or pre-conceived really…but the core of WHW has always been about Metal in its purest form melded with external elements and ideas.
8. In your compositions, there are many kinds of metal, doom ,power, epic, progressive. How difficult is to combine all these so successfully;
Tom: Honestly, it is effortless because the music has a tendency to write itself; we listen and love so deeply that it is without a thought or care that we swerve in and out of genres….the heart…and emotion has no dedicated genre….so we simply “let it be”….; if it comes from the heart, then it is “right”….the moment we start THINKING about it, I’ll send us out to pasture…and walk away. We all grew up with classic Metal, NWOBHM, Thrash, Prog, plus the influences of our elders and siblings…;these aspects will always be there and it is as natural and organic as breathing for us.
9. Have you any music artist that you admire and there is anyone that you"ve liked to collaborate with;
Tom: To tell the truth, it is this configuration of WHW that I want to collaborate TRULY with the most; so far I’ve been responsible for 99% of what has been released, yet every member of this band is a songwriter in their own right and we have yet to tap into that. Thinking outside of the band? Hmmm I would LOVE to spend a few jams with Devin Townsend, Sverd from Arcturus, Away from Voivod….or Vangelis and Kitaro…hell, I can imagine so many things…everything from Steve Perry singing “Voice In The Wind” to Uli Jon Roth playing on ANYTHING we do. And then there is Mono from Japan…who I’d kill to create with….man, it’s really all over the place…but when all is said and done, the only musicians I NEED…are those with whom I have surrounded myself with already. But if Tim Baker (from Cirith Ungol) or John Arch ever want to intervene, the door is more than open….
10. WHW"s music isn’t so simple. Is it difficult for the band to attribute it on live shows;
Tom: It really depends on the songs in question; even the most straightforward require a devotion and connection unlike that of most scenarios. But whatever we do elect to perform is absolutely rehearsed to death….until we have insured every performance is a transcendence. 9 times out of 10 however, we will resolve to perform the material that has the most meaning to us, and that isn’t necessarily the most technically demanding, rather the emotional. That said, it IS second nature to perform from the heart & every note, every beat is a representation of what has truly been felt or known. The hardest thing for us is reliving the things we’ve buried in our personal lives…but if it makes a difference for even 1 individual, we’ll rise to that challenge every time.
11. It"s known that there is a lot of older unreleased material. Is there any thought for doing an album containing this material;
Tom: Prior to our current deal, there were plans to unearth these rarities, and it is not to say that this will not come to fruition now, but our focus is very much on the “new” and the future; there already is another NEW album waiting in the wings, so there is no point in gravedigging at this point. But someday, aye, we’ll sort out some ultra-rare things if anyone out there is interested in hearing them!
12. Now the band has signed with Nuclear Blast. The fact that it"s a major label puts any limitations;
Tom: While on one hand we cannot just do ANYTHING we want, we are absolutely free to be who and what WHW is. Obviously we have to adhere to NB’s timeframes, plans, and ambitions, but that has zero effect on the music of WHW whatsoever. In the grand scheme of things, our alliance with a “superpower” like NB insures that our music will reach more people than ever before, and in doing so shut down the extortionists that pimp our older releases like fine whores… soon, the entire discography of WHW will be available at a reasonable price, in more locations than ever before…and THAT was a prime motivation in sealing this deal with NB; no more extortion…if you want to hear us, it will be within reach.
13. Before some months WHW made a great performance at Up The Hammers festival, here in Greece. What are your memories;
Tom: There is absolutely no place more special or closer to my heart than Athens. I have a lot of history there…and pieces of my heart and soul are not only scattered over the city, but throughout Hellas. When I am there, I feel that I am home…so to have the fortune of performing at Up The Hammers…after all these years…brother, we would’ve played there for free…and nearly did. There is no city in the universe that is more METAL than Athens, and I have so many brothers & sisters there that they alone could fill a venue….and they did….along with my heart and soul. One of the most important things WHW has ever done was to share the stage with age-old brothers like Solstice and Dawn Of Winter…but more relevant was the fact that this happened first in Athens. The first interviews we ever did as WHW were for Greek zines….and bro, I’ve spent a good amount of time there in my personal life. There is absolutely no place more special or close to my heart than Athens…to have finally performed there after all these years meant the world to me…and to share that experience with everyone I’ve ever known from Hellas…let’s just say those tears onstage were genuine; I was home…it’s where I belong…and our music is the music of Hellas…in heart if not else. But no more tricks involving tsipouro or congorettzi you cheeky bastards! I’m a veteran and thus know better…I’ve paid my dues haha….Heavy Metal Re Mounia!
14. What are the plans for the future; I’ve read, in your fb page, that next album "won"t be doom, just metal”. Are you moving to a new direction;
Tom: As always it is music from the heart and soul…it’s simply that in this case, it’s very aggressive, progressive, and without brooding; WHW is what it is and cannot be anything different….it’s just a different ratio of the same influences that have always been a part of us. More guitars, more neo-classic harmonies, more motion…but yet with the same emotion as always…as deep as it gets….so yeah, it does recall our early influences like Holy Terror and Forbidden, but yet the staples of early Warlord, Fates Warning, Mercyful Fate, and Rush are all still in there. It’s really just yet another ratio of existing influences…but it is Epic and Metal as fuck! Yet, it is still clearly WHW….and after 22 years, there is no way we could be anything other….; let’s put it this way, if you were with us before, you will be proud with these songs….if not, perhaps this brutality will be encouragement…but in the end…you are either with us or against us….our music only comes from one place…the heart.
15. Finally, have you any message for the Greek fans of WHW;
Tom: Brothers and sisters of Athens and Hellas….I love you more everyday….I am with you there…in heart & spirit….do not compromise your dreams or ideals….do not sell your souls…stand your ground…we are with you….it takes a united nation to make changes, thus young and old….unite…to forge a new Greece…do NOT sit on the sidelines…forge the new world…with the fire of your ancestry….WHW is with you in heart, soul, and mind. You are my brothers and sisters…and I will die by your side. But before we concede to the bastards, let us enjoy a new renaissance together…where we all feel at home. Hellas means all to me and WHW…we are with you…as you have been with us….forever and ever.

1. Ξέρω ότι μόλις γυρίσατε από μια εμφάνιση στο ProgPower festival. Ποιες είναι οι εντυπώσεις σου από αυτό;
Tom: Το ProgPower USA είναι σαφέστατα η πιο επαγγελματική και πιο οργανωμένη που έχουμε συμμετάσχει ποτέ... και αυτό λέει κάτι αν λάβεις υπόψιν σου την ακρίβεια των φίλων στη Γερμανία, που έκαναν απίστευτη δουλειά σε φεστιβάλ όπως το Hammer Of Doom ή το Doom Shall Rise για παράδειγμα... για να μην αναφέρουμε την ποιότητα του ατζέντη μας για τις συναυλίες, Rock The Nation. Παρόλο το γεγονός ότι αυτά είναι όλα εξαιρετικά παραδείγματα για το πως να κάνεις κάτι σωστά, η αλήθεια είναι ότι το ProgPower USA είναι πάνω και πέρα από όλα αυτά... η παραμικρή λεπτομέρεια ήταν ξεψυρισμένη στην εντέλεια και τα πάντα, από τοθς τεχνικούς μέχρι τους ρυθμιστές του signing session, ακόμα και το catering, ήταν κάτι που δεν είχαμε βιώσει ξανά μέχρι τώρα. Μετά είναι το κοινό... που πραγματικά ήταν κάτι ανώμαλο για την Αμερική... όλοι ήταν φιλικοί, ανοιχτόμυαλοι, υπομονετικοί... επιπλέον υπήρχαν σπόνσορες, που πλήρωσαν 500 δολλάρια ο καθένας, για να έχουν άμεση πρόσβαση στη μπάντα... εξωπραγματικό! Επίσης ο χώρος της συναυλίας, ήταν απίστευτος... αν λάβεις υπόψιν σου το τι υπάρχει στην Αμερική. Σε ότι έχει να κάνει με τις μπάντες με τις οποίες μοιραστήκαμε τη σκηνή, κάθε μια από αυτές ήταν απίστευτη με τον τρόπο της... απίστευτοι μουσικοί και τραγουδιστές... ο Chity (Red Circuit/ex-Firewind), ο Rob Tiranti (Rob Tyrant Of Labyrinth), ο Warrel Dane… Για μένα πάντως οι μπάντες που έκλεψαν την παράσταση ήταν ο Ihsahn (ex-Emperor, συνοδευόμενος από τη μπάντα του ανιψιού του, Leprous) και οι Forbidden (μια σπάνια εμφάνιση με τον Gene Hoglan στα τύμπανα!)... αλλά όλοι ήταν τέλοιοι. Ήταν πραγματικά τιμή μας να συμμετάσχουμε σε μια τέτοια εκδήλωση και θέλω να ελπίζω ότ στο μέλλον θα έχουμε ξανά την ευκαιρία να συμμετάσχουμε και πάλι.
2. Είπατε ότι μετά το φεστιβάλ, θα υπάρξουν αλλαγές στη μπάντα. Μπορείς να μας πεις κάτι περισσότερο;
Tom: Το σενάριο είναι ότι μετά τον χείμαρρο δραστηριότητας τα τελευταία 3 χρόνια, κάποια μέλη έχουν την ανάγκη να πάρουν λίγο χρόνο εκτός μπάντας με τις οικογενειές τους και να αφοσιωθούν στις προσωπικές τους καταστάσεις. Δεν είναι κάτι καταστροφικό... είμαστε όλοι σαν οικογένεια... απλά κάποια μέλη θα κάτσουν στην άκρη, ενώ οι While Heaven Wept θα συνεχίσουν μπροστά. Δεν υπάρχει δράμα... κανένας δεν απολύεται ή παραιτείται... είναι απλά θέμα ανθρώπων που θέλουν να αντιμετωπίσουν και να επενδύσουν σε ότι έχουν εκτός μπάντας. Μακάρι να μπορούσα να γίνω πιο συγκεκριμένος, αλλά τα επίσημα δελτία τύπου δεν έχουν ανακοινωθεί ακόμα... Μπορώ όμως να σου πω, ότι οι βασικές φωνές και συνθέτες της μπάντας, θα συνεχίσουν ακάθεκτοι, με τις ευλογίες αυτών που διάλεξαν να κάνουν άλλα πράγματα... οι οποίοι θα επιστρέψουν δριμύτεροι... δεν υπάρχουν διακοπές ή διαλείμματα από τη μπάντα για τους υπόλοιπους. Έχουμε πολλά να πούμε και μεγάλη ποσότητα μουσικής να δώσουμε. Μετά από 22 χρόνια, δεν βλέπουμε το τέλος στον ορίζοντα και σταμάτησα να προσπαθώ να δείχνω ότι δεν χρειάζεται να το κάνω αυτό (για την δική μου ψυχική ηρεμία).
3. Σε όλα τα χρόνια που υπάρχετε, έγιναν πολλές αλλαγές στο lineup σας. Ψάχνετε πάντα την τελειότητα ή υπάρχουν άλλοι λόγοι γι’αυτό;
Tom: Το lineup μας ήταν αρκετά σταθερό από το 1998, εκτός από τους ντράμμερ και την προσθήκη των Rain Irving (φωνητικά) και Jason Lingle (πλήκτρα). Η μεγαλύτερη κινητικότητα στο lineup, ήταν τα πρώτα χρόνια. Ξεκινήσαμε τη μπάντα στην πρώτη χρονιά του Λυκείου σαν μια παρέα φίλων... Αναπόφευκτα, υπήρξαν αυτοί που συνέχισαν να εξελίσσονται και να πιστεύουν σ’αυτό, καθώς και αυτοί που έχασαν την συγκέντρωσή τους από άλλα είδη μουσικής, πανεπιστήμια, γυναίκες, καταχρήσεις κλπ. Το να φτιάξουμε αυτό το lineup, ήταν μια διαδικασία που πήρε χρόνια για να γίνει, αλλά πιστεύω ότι είναι το καλύτερο setup της μπάντας και θα δυσκολευτούμε να φτιάξουμε κάτι άλλο που να ξεπερνάει το υπάρχων. Αυτό δεν είναι σε καμία περίπτωση κριτική για τα παλιά μέλη... κάθε νέο line up, πήγε τα πράγματα σε άλλο επίπεδο και έχουν περάσει από διάφορες θέσεις κάποιοι απίστευτοι μουσικοί... αλλά στην ουσία, πιστεύω ότι τώρα έχουμε το ‘χρυσό’ line up... κάτι τόσο σπουδαίο, που είναι δύσκολο να φανταστώ τη μπάντα να συνεχίζει χωρίς αυτά τα μέλη. Παρόλα αυτά, δεδομένης της ιστορίας μας, πάντα προχωράμε μπροστά και ανοδικά, ακόμα κι όταν φαίνεται ακατόρθωτο. Στο τέλος, το θέμα είναι ότι υπάρχουν πλεονεκτήματα όπως και να το εκλάβεις και παρόλο που υπάρχουν κάποιοι που είναι πιο άρτιοι τεχνικά, υπάρχουν μη μουσικά θέματα που είναι αδύνατον να αντικατασταθούν. Και πάλι, η μπάντα είναι λίγο-πολύ μια οικογένεια... κυριολεκτικά και υποθετικά. Η Michelle και ο Trevor είναι παντρεμένοι, o Scott είναι ο αδερφός της Michelle… οι 4 μας πήγαμε σχολείο μαζί κλπ.
4. Ας πάμε πίσω στις πρώτες μέρες της μπάντας. Είναι αλήθεια ότι το όνομα της μπάντας βγήκε από ένα γράμμα μια πρώην κοπέλας σου;
Tom: Κάπως έτσι είναι. Έλαβα ένα γράμμα από κάποια που τότε για μένα σήμαινε πιο πολλά από οποιονδήποτε και οτιδήποτε... στην επέτειό μας... ήταν μια λαμπρή φθινοπωρινή μέρα, ούτε σύννεφο στον ουρανό... και είδα τον φάκελο στο γραμματοκιβώτιό μου... αυτά που διάβασα με καταράκωσαν εντελώς. Είχε μετακομίσει το προηγούμενο καλοκαίρι και λόγω διαφόρων καταστάσεων, ο κόσμος είχε διαλυθεί (γονείς κλπ). Αυτά που διάβασα με ανέβασαν... με έριξαν... ήταν η καλύτερη φίλη μου και η αγάπη μας ήταν αγνή και αθώα. Οι μόνες λέξεις που θυμάμαι πλέον, μπορεί να φανούν γνωστές στους οπαδούς μας, ‘I’m not the only one in this world’ και ‘I’ve just given up’… τέλος πάντων, όταν το διάβασα, έπεσα στα γόνατα με απερίγραπτη θλίψη, μπροστά στο σπίτι των γονιών μου. Δεν μπορούσα να κρατήσω τα δάκρυά μου... Έκλαψα ανεξέλεγκτα... και καθώς γινόντουσαν αυτά, ο αέρας ξαφνικά ήταν αγριεμένος, ο ουρανός έγινε μαύρος, και οι ουρανοί εξαπέλυσαν έναν κατακλυσμό... σαν να ένιωθαν την απόγνωσή μου... ο ουρανός κυριολεκτικά θρηνούσε. Από τότε, βρέχει σε κάθε μέγαλη εκδήλωση στην ιστορία της μπάντας. Ξαφνικά στη διάρκεια προβών, βίαιες καταιγίδες όταν τελειώνουμε κάποιο mastering session, τα ίδια σε σημαντικές συναυλίες... είναι αρκετά περίεργο και μυστήριο, αλλά είναι η απόλυτη αλήθεια.
5. Μπορείς να μας πεις τον τρόπο με τον οποίο συνθέτεις μουσική; Κατά πόσο ότι συμβαίνει στη ζωή σου επηρεάζει την σύνθεση;
Tom: Ότι κι αν κάνω βγαίνει από την καρδιά μου. Ποτέ δεν υπάρχει προεργασία... η μουσική (και οι στίχοι) βγαίνουν όταν είναι να βγουν... σαν να είμαστε ‘περάσματα’ σε κάτι βαθύτερο και πιο σπουδαίο. Συχνά ένα προφανές γεγονός υπερτερεί του ‘περάσματος’ και πραγματικά δεν υπάρχει αρμονία ή αιτία πέρα από αυτό... η μουσική βγαίνει όταν είναι η ώρα... από το βαθύτερο σημείο της καρδιάς... είναι πάντα αγνό, ειλικρινές συναίσθημα... τίποτα ποτέ δεν είναι εξαναγκασμένο ή προσχεδιασμένο. Οτιδήποτε κι αν κάνουμε, είναι βασισμένο σε αληθινά γεγονότα, σχέσεις, καταστάσεις... είναι προϋπόθεση της μπάντας και το μόνο που ξέρω να κάνω. Τη στιγμή που ο εξωσκελετός της σύνθεσης μας φανερωθεί, μόνο τότε θα πάρω στυλό και χαρτί για να διαμορφώσω τις τελικές ρυθμίσεις... αλλιώς είναι 100% οργανικό και αναμφισβήτητα από την καρδιά και την ψυχή.
6. Τα τελευταία χρόνια, η μουσική της μπάντας ήταν πολύ μελαγχολική και σκοτεινή. Πλέον, νιώθω ότι το ύφος έχει αλλάξει λίγο. Είναι τα πράγματα στη ζωή σου καλύτερα και έχει να κάνει αυτό με το πως προσεγγίζεις τη μουσική;
Tom: Δεν θα το πάω τόσο μακριά ώστε να πω ότι οι πρόσφατες κυκλοφορίες ήταν λιγότερο μελαγχολικές και σκοτεινές... μουσικά είναι πιο ποικίλες, αλλά στιχουργικά είναι ζοφερά όσο ποτέ. Καθώς εξελισσόμαστε σαν οντότητες και έχοντας νέες εμπειρίες, στο τέλος η μπάντα είναι ένα όχημα για όσα δεν έγιναν σύμφωνα με το σχέδιο, την φιλοδοξία, την καρδιά. Νομίζω ότι αυτό που συγχίζει τον κόσμο, είναι ότι δεν φοβόμαστε να ενσωματώσουμε τρανές μελωδίες στη μουσική μας (λες και έχουμε επιλογή, αφού είμαστε ‘περάσματα’...). Αυτό που πολλοί δεν καταλαβαίνουν, είναι η δύναμη της αντίθεσης. Πως μπορείς να ορίζεις το απόλυτο μαύρο χωρίς το λευκό; Τον Παράδεισο χωρίς την Κόλαση; Υποθέτω ότι κάπου μέσα σε όλα αυτά, βρίσκεται η αληθινή φύση της μπάντας... την αδιανόητη αντιπαράθεση του φωτός απέναντι στο σκοτάδι.
7. Ποιες είναι οι μουσικές επιρροές σας; Τι μουσική σας αρέσει να ακούτε;
Tom: Ακούμε μια τεράστια ποικιλία μουσικής... Θα μπορούσα να φάω όλο το χώρο του site σας για να αναπτύξω όλο το φάσμα της μουσικής που ακούμε! Στον πυρήνα της μπάντας όμως, όλα είναι γύρω από τους Fates Warning (της εποχής του John Arch), με τους πρώιμους Candlemass και Kitaro. Υπήρχαν πάντα στοιχεία από Sabbath, Slayer, Rush, Holy Terror, Voivod, Bach και Coroner (και ακόμα 50000 άλλες επιρροές), αλλά η παραπάνω τριάδα είναι αυτή από την οποία προερχόμαστε. Ξεχωριστά ακούμε τα πάντα από κλασσική μέχρι jazz, prog – και βασικά οτιδήποτε δεν είναι πλαστικό και προσχεδιασμένο... αλλά ο πυρήνας της μπάντας, ήταν πάντα στο metal και στην πιο αγνή του μορφή, σε συνδυασμό με εξωτερικά στοιχεία και ιδέες.
8. Στις συνθέσεις σας, υπάρχουν πολλά στοιχεία metal (doom, power, epic, progressive). Πόσο δύσκολο είναι να τα συνδυάσετε τόσο επιτυχημένα;
Tom: Ειλικρινά, δεν καταβάλλουμε μεγάλη προσπάθεια, γιατί η μουσική έχει την τάση να γράφεται μόνη της. Ακούμε και αγαπάμε τόσο βαθιά, οπότε μπαίνουμε και βγαίνουμε από το κάθε είδος χωρίς σκέψη... η καρδιά... και το συναίσθημα δεν είναι αφοσιωμένα σε κάποιο είδος... οπότε απλά το αφήνουμε μόνο του... αν βγει από την καρδιά, τότε είναι σωστό... την στιγμή που αρχίσουμε να το σκεφτόμαστε, θα μας στείλω να βοσκήσουμε... και θα φύγουμε μακριά. Όλοι μεγαλώσαμε με κλασσικό metal, NWOBHM, Thrash, Prog, πέρα από τις επιρροές μας από μεγαλύτερους και αδέρφια... αυτά τα στοιχεία θα είναι πάντα εκεί και είναι τόσο φυσικά και οργανικά, όσο η αναπνοή για μας.
9. Υπάρχει κάποιος καλλιτέχνης τον οποίο θαυμάζετε; Υπάρχει κάποιος με τον οποίο θα θέλατε να συνεργαστείτε;
Tom: Για να πω την αλήθεια, είναι αυτή η σύνθεση της μπάντας που θέλω να συνεργάζομαι πιο πολύ... μέχρι στιγμής ήμουν 99% υπεύθυνος για ότι κυκλοφόρησε, αλλά τώρα άλλο ένα μέλος της μπάντας ασχολείτε με σύνθεση, οπότε πρέπει να το βάλουμε κι αυτό μέσα. Να σκεφτώ έξω από τη μπάντα; Χμμμ... θα γούσταρα πολύ να τζαμάρω μερικές φορές με τον Devin Townsend, τον Sverd των Arcturus, τον Away των Voivod… ή τον Vangelis των Kitaro… διάολε, φαντάζομαι τόσα πράγματα... οτιδήποτε από τον Steve Perry να τραγουδάει το ‘Voice In The Wind’, τον Uli Jon Roth να παίζει σε ΟΤΙ κι αν κάνουμε. Και μετά οι Mono από την Ιαπωνία... θα σκότωνα για να συνεργαστούμε... είναι παντού... αλλά στο τέλος, οι μόνοι μουσικοί που ΕΧΩ ΑΝΑΓΚΗ να συνεργάζομαι, είναι αυτόι που με περιτριγυρίζουν ήδη. Αν όμως ο Tim Baker (Cirith Ungol) ή ο John Arch θέλουν να επέμβουν, η πόρτα είναι παραπάνω από ανοιχτή...
10. Η μουσική της μπάντας δεν είναι και τόσο απλή. Είναι δύσκολο να την προσαρμόσετε ζωντανά;
Tom: Βασικά εξαρτάται για ποια κομμάτια μιλάμε. Ακόμα και τα πιο straight κομμάτια, απαιτούν αφοσίωση. Όμως ότι κι αν διαλέξουμε να ερμηνεύσουμε, το προβάρουμε μέχρι θανάτου... μέχρι να διασφαλίσουμε ότι κάθε εμφάνιση είναι μια υπεροχή. 9 από τις 10 φορές πάντως, θα διαλέξουμε να παίξουμε το υλικό που έχει το μεγαλύτερο νόημα για εμάς και δεν είναι απαραίτητα τα πιο τεχνικά, όσο είναι τα συναισθηματικά. Είναι η δεύτερη φύση μας να παίζουμε από καρδιάς την κάθε νότα. Κάθε χτύπημα είναι η αντιπροσώπιση του τι είναι γνωστό και του τι έχουμε αισθανθεί. Το πιο δύσκολο για μας, είναι να ξαναζούμε πράγματα που έχουμε θάψει στις προσωπικές μας ζωές... αν όμως κάνει τη διαφορά έστω και για έναν από μας, τότε στεκόμαστε μπροστά στην πρόκληση κάθε φορά.
11. Είναι γνωστό ότι υπάρχει αρκετό παλιό, ακυκλοφόρητο υλικό. Υπάρχει κάποια σκέψη να γίνει ένα άλμπουμ που να περιέχει αυτό το υλικό;
Tom: Σύμφωνα με την παρούσα συμφωνία, υπήρχαν σχέδια να ξεθάψουμε αυτό το σπάνιο υλικό... δεν λέω ότι δεν θα γίνει, αλλά έχουμε εστιάσει πιο πολύ στο ‘νέο’ και το μέλλον. Υπάρχει ήδη ένα νέο άλμπουμ που περιμένει, οπότε δεν υπάρχει λόγος για σκαψίματα στην παρούσα φάση. Κάποια στιγμή όμως, ναι, θα βγουν κάποια υπερσπάνια πράγματα, αν οποιοσδήποτε ενδιαφέρεται να τα ακούσει!
12. Η μπάντα τώρα έχει υπογράψει στην Nuclear Blast. Το γεγονός ότι είναι μεγάλη εταιρία σας έχει βάλει περιορισμούς;
Tom: Από τη μία, ενώ δεν μπορούμε να κάνουμε ΟΤΙ θέλουμε, είμαστε απόλυτα ελεύθεροι να είμαστε αυτό που είναι η μπάντα. Προφανώς θα πρέπει να ακολουθήσουμε τα χρονοδιαγράμματα της εταιρείας, τα σχέδια, τις φιλοδοξίες, αλλά αυτό έχει μηδενική επιρροή στην μουσική μας σαν μπάντα. Η συμμαχία μας με μια υπερδύναμη όπως η Nuclear Blast, διασφαλίζει ότι η μουσική μας θα φτάσει σε πιο πολλούς ανθρώπους από πριν, και κατά συνέπεια θα βουλώσει αυτούς τους εκβιαστές που συμπεριφέρονται στις παλιές μας κυκλοφορίες σαν πουτάνες... σύντομα ολόκληρη η δισκογραφία της μπάντας θα είναι διαθέσιμη σε λογική τιμή, σε πιο πολλά μέλη από πριν... και ΑΥΤΟ ήταν το βασικό κίνητρο στο να υπογράψουμε την συμφωνία με την NB. Τέλος οι εκβιασμοί... αν θέλει κάποιος να μας ακούσει θα είναι σε απόσταση αναπνοής.
13. Πριν μερικούς μήνες, η μπάντα έκανε μια απίστευτη εμφάνιση στο Up The Hammers festival, εδώ στην Ελλάδα. Ποιες είναι οι αναμνήσεις σας;
Tom: Δεν υπάρχει άλλο μέρος πιο σημαντικό και πιο κοντά στην καρδιά μου από την Αθήνα. Έχω μεγάλη ιστορία εκεί... κομμάτια της καρδιάς μου είναι διασκορπισμένα όχι μόνο στην πόλη, αλλά σε όλη την Ελλάδα. Όποτε είμαι εκεί, είναι σαν να βρίσκομαι στο σπίτι μου... οπότε το έχω την ευκαιρία να παίξω στο Up The Hammers… μετά από όλα αυτά τα χρόνια... αδερφέ μου θα μπορούσαμε να παίξουμε τσάμπα... και σχεδόν το κάναμε. Δεν υπάρχει πόλη στο σύμπαν που είναι πιο METAL από την Αθήνα, και έχω τόσα αδέρφια εκεί, που θα μπορούσαν να γεμίσουν τον χώρο... και το έκαναν... μαζί με την καρδιά και την ψυχή μου. Ένα από τα σημαντικότερα πράγματα που έχει κάνει η μπάντα, είναι να μοιραστεί τη σκηνή με τους Solstice και τους Dawn Of Winter… αλλά το σημαντικό είναι αυτό έγινε πρώτη φορά στην Αθήνα. Οι πρώτες συνεντεύξεις που κάναμε σαν μπάντα ήταν για Ελληνικά περιοδικά... και αδερφέ μου, πέρασα πολύ χρόνο της ζωής μου εκεί. Δεν υπάρχει άλλο μέρος πιο σημαντικό και πιο κοντά στην καρδιά μου από την Αθήνα... το να παίξουμε μετά από τόσα χρόνια πάλι εκεί, σήμαινε τα πάντα για μένα... και το να μοιραστώ την εμπειρία με όσους ξέρω από την Ελλάδα... ας πούμε ότι τα δάκρυα στη σκηνή ήτα αληθινά... ήμουν σπίτι... εκεί ανήκω... και η μουσική μας, είναι η μουσική της Ελλάδας... στην καρδιά αν όχι οπουδήποτε αλλού. Αλλά όχι άλλα κόλπα με τσίπουρα και κοκορέτσια καθάρματα! Είμαι βετεράνος και ξέρω... πλήρωσα τα χρέη μου! χαχαχαχα!!!! Heavy metal ρε μουνιά!!!
14. Ποια είναι τα σχέδια για το μέλλον; Διάβασα στη σελίδα σας στο fb, ότι το νέο άλμπουμ ‘δεν θα είναι doom, απλά metal’. Πάτε σε νέα κατεύθυνση;
Tom: Όπως πάντα, είναι μουσική από την καρδιά και την ψυχή... είναι απλά αυτό. Είναι πολύ επιθετικό, progressive. Η μπάντα είναι αυτό που είναι και δεν γίνεται να είναι κάτι διαφορετικό... είναι απλά μια άλλη άποψη από τις ίδιες επιρροές που ήταν πάντα μέρος από μας. Πιο πολλές κιθάρες, πιο πολλές νεοκλασσικές μελωδίες... αλλά πάντα με το ίδιο συναίσθημα όπως πάντα... όσο βαθύτερο γίνεται... ναι, βγάζει προς τα έξω παλιότερες επιρροές από Holy Terror και Forbidden, αλλά οι πινελιές από παλιούς Warlord, Fates Warning, Mercyful Fate και Rush είναι ακόμα εκεί. Είναι epic και metal όσο ποτέ! Ναι είναι καθαρά While Heaven Wept… και μετά από 22 χρόνια, δεν θα μπορούσε να είναι κάτι άλλο... ας το θέσουμε ως εξής... αν ήσουν μαζί μας τότε, θα ήσουν περήφανος με αυτά τα κομμάτια... αν όχι, αυτή η βαναυσότητα, θα ήταν ενθάρρυνση... αλλά στο τέλος... είσαι μαζί μας ή εναντίον μας... η μουσική βγαίνει μόνο από ένα μέρος... την καρδιά.
15. Τέλος, έχεις κάποιο μήνυμα για τους Έλληνες οπαδούς της μπάντας;
Tom: Αδέρφια μου στην Αθήνα και την Ελλάδα... σας αγαπάω πιο πολύ κάθε μέρα... είμαι μαζί σας εκεί... στην καρδιά και το πνεύμα... μην συμβιβάσετε τα όνειρα και τα ιδανεικά σας... μην πουλήσετε τις ψυχές σας... σταθείτε στα πόδια σας... είμαστε μαζί σας... θέλει ενωμένο έθνος για να γίνουν αλλαγές... οπότε νέοι και ηλικιωμένοι ενωθείτε... για να φτιάξετε μια νέα Ελλάδα... μην κάτσετε στο περιθώριο... φτιάξτε τον νέο κόσμο... με την φωτιά των προγόνων σας... η μπάντα είναι μαζί σας με καρδιά, ψυχή και μυαλό. Είστε τα αδέρφια μου... και θα πεθάνω στο πλάϊ σας. Πριν όμως πέσουμε στα καθάρματα, ας απολαύσουμε την αναγέννηση μαζί... όπου όλοι νιώθουμε σαν στο σπίτι μας. Η Ελλάδα σημαίνει τα πάντα για μένα και η μπάντα... είμαστε μαζί σας... όπως είστε κι εσείς με μας... για πάντα.
