COMANIAC on Rock Overdose: “On the “Instruction For Destruction” we wanted to find our own way and musical identity”

Comaniac is not a usual band. They may play thrash metal but they have something unique on their sound, something that makes them differ from the other thrash metal bands. Now, they have a second album and they are ready to conquer Europe as they join forces with METAL CHURCH on their “Road Destruction 2017” tour! Below you can read the interview that the band gave to Rock Overdose and to Konstantinos Sotirelis.

Rock Overdose: Hello guys, welcome to Rock Overdose. A few days ago you released your second album, “Instruction For Destruction”. How do you feel about this release?

Comaniac: We feel very confident with the result and the first reviews sound great! After months of many changes in the band and a lot of work it’s a huge relief to unleash our second offering into the world.

Rock Overdose: What’s the feedback so far from the press and the fans?

Comaniac: Three weeks ago we played the release show in Switzerland and it was just great. Many platforms and media partners discussed the album in advance and it was very cool to see how many people showed up and showed their support to the band.
Of course there are a few negative reviews who are struggling with the genre because they can’t find a band similar to us. We have a thrashy songwriting but involve a lot of melodies and different moods into the songs. That seems to be a real issue for some people. We’re not Thrash, we’re not Power, we’re not Heavy. Well, we don’t care in which genre you want to put us. We’re Comaniac and that’s how we sound like: Like a company of maniacs.

Rock Overdose: “Instruction for Destruction”. Very interesting album title. Can you explain what you mean and why did you choose this?

Comaniac: The main theme is about building up and breaking down. It reflects on a certain time in the band when we had to deal with lineup changes. But of course it also reflects on society. The internet is full of instructions and manuals how to deal with certain problems or topics. But in my opinion those guidelines are more limitations than solving problems because they tell you what to do instead of encouraging you to find your own way and being creative.

Rock Overdose: In my opinion, this album is taking you on the next level, comparing to your debut album. The compositions, the melodies, the riffs, the vocals, are all better. How do you see it from your own point of view?

Comaniac: We see it similar. We evolved a lot as a band and as musicians in the past few months. While our Debut “Return To The Wasteland” was a capture of wild thrashing madness we really wanted to find our own way and musical identity through the process of the second album. We already have so many awesome Thrash Bands from the 1980s who all found their own style. That’s what we also want to achieve: finding our own style in a music genre that has pretty been stagnant the last years.

Rock Overdose: How hard did you work for this result?

Comaniac: Well, pretty much as hard as our lives allowed us to.

Rock Overdose: Do you plan to do some shows or to tour so as to promote the album?

Comaniac: We’ll be playing a few shows in Czech Republic in June and until then we have shows settled up in Switzerland to promote the album. In August we’ll be playing shows in Germany for a few weeks. For autumn we’re working on some more tours but cannot give away any details yet. Of course you can update yourself on our homepage or on facebook.

Rock Overdose: In 2016 you had some line-up changes. Was it difficult for you to write new material with the new members?

Comaniac: Of course we had to find each other and talk about many musical things. We all have a certain musical education but that didn’t make it easier to work together in the beginning. Anyway, we were focused and convinced to get something great out of everyones ideas. So it turned out that the new guitarist Valentin and me (Jonas, singer) became the core of every song while Stefan on drums and Ray on bass gave every song the final blow before it was recorded.

Rock Overdose: New bands with young members usually write new material all the time. Does this happen to you, too?

Comaniac: Yes! For us music has a lot to do with emotional regulation in everyones life. So it’s not connected with any intentions to produce albums for the band but more with capturing moments in life. That’s why we are writing songs and lyrics whenever we feel to do so.

Rock Overdose: A lot of people think that some bands can live from their music because they have a contract with a label, but I think that these days this is really hard. What’s your experience on that?

Comaniac: For many people it must be surprising how little bands can really life from their music. Even bands who are successfully playing music for decades are still working while they’re not on tour. To get an album out and to promote it properly it is necessary to involve many people like the Label staff, designers, bookers, light and sound engineers, managers and so on. They all want to get paid for their work. That’s where the money goes to in the first place. Only if there is something left after all payments it’s the bands turn. Normally there is nothing left any more…So to be honest: No, there are only a few bands who can really live from their music. And I’m talking about the bands who are really on top of the billings on festivals for example.

Rock Overdose: Do you have any other plans of a new release? Maybe another music video?

Comaniac: After the release of our second album “Instruction For Destruction” in April 2017 and the release of our Video Clip “Coal” we will be releasing a drum playthrough video within the next weeks. So especially for all drummers out there: stay tuned! Of course we have at least one bonus track recorded which has still not been released yet. But there is no date to be announced yet when we unleash this beast.

Rock Overdose: Thank you very much for this interview. The last words are yours.

Comaniac: Thank you for your support! Hope to see you on tour! Check our tour dates on the official homepage.
