Οι Groza ξεκίνησαν το 2016 ως ένα σόλο project του P.G. και γρήγορα εξελίχθηκαν σε μια ισχυρή, πλήρη μπάντα. Πώς επηρέασε αυτή η μετάβαση τη δυναμική της σύνθεσης των τραγουδιών σας, ειδικά στο τελευταίο σας άλμπουμ, "Nadir";
P.G.: Τα υπόλοιπα παιδιά στην μπάντα άλλαξαν φυσικά τη δυναμική της συνθετικής διαδικασίας αρκετά, σε σύγκριση με τον πρώτο δίσκο. Ο καθένας έχει διαφορετικές επιρροές και όλοι έχουν λόγο στα τραγούδια, γεγονός που κάνει τα κομμάτια πολύ πιο ενδιαφέροντα σε σχέση με το όταν γράφω μόνος μου. Αυτό δίνει στα τραγούδια μια νέα προοπτική και μερικές φορές τα αλλάζει προς κατευθύνσεις που δεν θα είχα ακολουθήσει ποτέ αν έγραφα μόνος μου.
Η μουσική σας συνδυάζει άψογα τα κλασικά blast beats του black metal με κρύες, ατμοσφαιρικές και post-black μελωδίες. Πώς διατηρείτε την ισορροπία ανάμεσα στην απόλυτη ηχητική επιθετικότητα και το βαθύ συναισθηματικό βάρος;
P.G.: Δεν είναι κάτι που το σκέφτομαι, αλλά το νιώθω. Για μένα, η μουσική αφορά πάντα την ισορροπία και τις δυναμικές, οπότε πρέπει να νιώσω πότε έχει επιτευχθεί η σωστή ισορροπία· δεν υπάρχει τρόπος να το κατασκευάσεις αυτό. Απλά ξέρω ότι είναι έτοιμο, όταν είναι έτοιμο.
P.G.: Κάθε σύγκριση με τους Mgła παραμένει κομπλιμέντο, καθώς εξακολουθούν να είναι η αγαπημένη μου μπάντα. Πιστεύω ότι ο ήχος μας έχει εξελιχθεί αρκετά από τον πρώτο δίσκο και πλέον υπάρχουν άλλες μπάντες με τις οποίες μας συγκρίνουν, αλλά στο τέλος της ημέρας, δεν παίρνουμε καμία σύγκριση κατάκαρδα και απλά κάνουμε αυτό που νιώθουμε σωστό και αυτό που βγαίνει από την καρδιά μας.
Το ευρωπαϊκό black metal διανύει μια εξαιρετικά δημιουργική φάση αυτή τη στιγμή, με τους Groza να βρίσκονται στην πρώτη γραμμή του νέου κύματος. Πώς αντιλαμβάνεστε το μέλλον της extreme metal σκηνής στα επόμενα χρόνια;
P.G.: Κυκλοφορεί πολύ σπουδαίο υλικό αυτή τη στιγμή, καθώς και υλικό που εξερευνά τα όρια του είδους και πολλές φορές ξεπερνά ακόμη και αυτά. Αυτό είναι πάντα πολύ πιο ενδιαφέρον για μένα σε σύγκριση με μπάντες που ακολουθούν τυφλά την παράδοση του ήχου. Τα πάντα πρέπει να εξελίσσονται, το ίδιο και η extreme μουσική.
Επιστρέφετε στην Ελλάδα για δύο εμφανίσεις . Δεδομένου ότι είστε πρωτίστως μια live μπάντα που τρέφεται από τη ζέστη και την ενέργεια των club venues, τι είδους σκοτεινή τελετουργία πρέπει να περιμένει το ελληνικό κοινό σε αυτό το οικείο/intimate περιβάλλον;
P.G.: Μπορείτε να περιμένετε μια έντονη και μοναδική εμπειρία μαζί μας, όπως συνήθως. Ανυπομονούσαμε να επιστρέψουμε στην Ελλάδα για μεγάλο χρονικό διάστημα, οπότε ελπίζουμε ότι μπορούμε να μετατρέψουμε όλο αυτόν τον ενθουσιασμό και την προσμονή σε ένα αξέχαστο show.
Το ελληνικό metal κοινό είναι πολύ γνωστό για το πάθος και την έντασή του. Ποιες είναι οι αναμνήσεις σας από τις προηγούμενες επισκέψεις σας στην Ελλάδα και ποιες είναι οι προσδοκίες σας για τη συναυλία στις 10 Ιουνίου στην Αθήνα και στις 11 Ιουνίου στο Mammoth Fest στη Θεσσαλονίκη;
P.G.: Μου έρχονται στο μυαλό το πάθος και η φιλοξενία όταν σκέφτομαι το παρελθόν. Η ενέργεια στις συναυλίες ήταν κάτι το αξιομνημόνευτο και ελπίζουμε σε μια παρόμοια ατμόσφαιρα στα επόμενα shows.
Κοιτάζοντας μπροστά, ποιο είναι το επόμενο μεγάλο βήμα ή καλλιτεχνικό ορόσημο που θέλετε να πετύχετε; Έχετε ήδη ξεκινήσει να κατεβάζετε ιδέες ή να γράφετε υλικό για τον διάδοχο του "Nadir";
P.G.: Ναι, βρισκόμαστε στη διαδικασία της συγγραφής αυτή τη στιγμή και σκοπεύουμε να ολοκληρώσουμε το γράψιμο μέχρι το τέλος του έτους. Η ηχογράφηση θα ακολουθήσει το επόμενο έτος, αν όλα πάνε σύμφωνα με το σχέδιο.

Groza: "Everything needs to evolve, so does extreme music"
Germany’s Groza are undoubtedly one of the most rising and talked-about names in the modern European black metal scene.
Just before their upcoming live appearances in Greece on June 10th at Gazarte Ground Stage (Athens) and on June 11th at Mammoth Fest (Thessaloniki), the band's mastermind, P.G., talks to Rockoverdose.gr, on what kind of dark ritual they are brewing for the passionate Greek audience.
Groza started out in 2016 as a solo project by P.G. and quickly evolved into a powerful full-time band. How did this transition shape your songwriting dynamic, especially on your latest album, "Nadir"?
P.G.: The other guys in the band naturally changed the dynamic of the songwriting process quite a bit, compared to the first record. Everyone has different influences and everyone has a say in the songs, which makes the songs a lot more interesting compared to when I write alone. It puts the songs in new perspective and sometimes changes them in directions I would have never gone in, while writing alone.
Your music seamlessly blends classic black metal blast beats with cold, atmospheric, and post-black melodies. How do you maintain the balance between absolute sonic aggression and deep emotional weight?
P.G.: It’s not thought about but felt. For me, music is always about balance and dynamics, so for me, I need to feel, when the right balance has been achieved, there is no way to construct it. I just know it’s done, when it’s done.
Since your debut "Unified In Void", many listeners compared your sound and visual aesthetic (hoods/masks) to bands like Mgła. How do you view these comparisons today, now that you have fully established your own distinct identity in the extreme metal scene?
P.G.: Every comparism to Mgla remains a compliment, since they still are my favorite band. I think, our sound has developed quite a bit since the first record and now, there are other bands that we compare to, but in the end of the day, we do not take any comparisms to heart and just do, what we feel is right and what comes to the heart.
European black metal is going through a highly creative phase right now, with Groza being at the forefront of the new wave. How do you perceive the future of the extreme metal scene in the coming years?
P.G.: There is a lot of great stuff coming out at the moment, also material that explores the borders of the genre and often times also pushes beyond them. That always is way more interesting to me compared to bands, that blindly follow the tradition of the sound. Everything needs to evolve, so does extreme music.
You are returning to Athens for a show at the Gazarte Ground Stage. Given that you are first and foremost a live band that thrives on the heat and energy of club venues, what kind of dark ritual should the Greek audience expect in this intimate setting?
P.G.: You can expect an intense and unique experience with us, as usual. We have been looking forward to returning to Greece for a long time, so we hope we can transform all that excitement and anticipation into an unforgettable show.
The Greek metal crowd is well-known for its passion and intensity. What are your memories from your past visits to Greece, and what are your expectations for the show on June 10th?
P.G.: Passion and hospitality come to mind when thinking back. The energy at the shows was something memorable and we hope for a similar vibe at the upcoming shows.
Looking forward, what is the next big step or artistic milestone you want to achieve? Have you already started brainstorming ideas or writing material for the successor of "Nadir"?
P.G.: Yes, we are in the writing process right now and plan to finish writing until the end of the year. Recording will follow next year, if everything goes according to plan.
