Ο Terry Gorle, ιδρυτής και κιθαρίστας των επανενωμένων Heιr Apparent, μίλησε στο Rockoverdose.gr για τα μελλοντικά σχέδια του συγκροτήματος, την ιστορία του και για τις επικείμενες συναυλίες στην Ελλάδα.

Rockoverdose.gr: Γεια σου Terry και καλωσήρθες στο Rockoverdose.gr. Οι Heir Apparent επέστρεψαν με την αυθεντική σύνθεση. Θα ήθελες να μας πεις λίγα πράγματα γι’ αυτό;

Gorle: Ήλπιζα εδώ και καιρό να το κάνω. Τώρα φαίνεται ότι πλέον είναι δυνατό. Ο Ray (Schwartz, drums), επικοινώνησε μαζί μου αρκετούς μήνες πριν και εγώ μπόρεσα και επικοινώνησα με τον Paul (Davidson, φωνητικά) και τον Derek (Peace, μπάσο) τον Σεπτέμβριο. Τώρα σχεδιάζουμε τις συναυλίες και ο Paul εκδήλωσε το ενδιαφέρον του για έναν καινούριο δίσκο. Σε αυτό το σημείο είναι ανοιχτός στα πάντα και ελπίζω για το καλύτερο.

 

Rockoverdose.gr: Στην επίσημη ιστοσελίδα σας έχετε ανακοινώσει τέσσερις συναυλίες. Σχεδιάζεται ναι κάνετε και άλλες;

Gorle: Σχεδιάζουμε να κάνουμε μία συναυλία σε τοπικό επίπεδο, στο Seattle πριν πάμε στην Γερμανία. Δεν έχουμε κάνει σχέδια για άλλες συναυλίες για μετά από αυτή την περιοδεία. Εξαρτάται από την διαθεσιμότητα μας και το τι θα μας προσφέρουν.

 

Rockoverdose.gr: Μετά από αυτές τις συναυλίες θα ηχογραφήσετε νέο υλικό; Υπάρχει ανέκδοτο υλικό από την εποχή με τον Paul ως τραγουδιστή;

Gorle: Όπως είπα, ο Paul έχει δηλώσει το ενδιαφέρον του να ηχογραφήσουμε έναν νέο δίσκο. Έτσι θα το σκεφτούμε όταν επιστρέψουμε. Υπάρχει κάποιο υλικό που δεν έχει κυκλοφορήσει και κάποιο θα είναι διαθέσιμο σύντομα… Είμαι σίγουρος ότι αν ψάξω θα μπορέσω να βρω πολλές παλιές ηχογραφήσεις από τις πρόβες μας ή τις ηχογραφήσεις μας, αλλά φαντάζομαι ότι όλα τα συγκροτήματα έχουν τέτοιο υλικό που δεν έχει κυκλοφορήσει ποτέ. Τα τελευταία δέκα χρόνια με ενδιέφερε πολύ περισσότερο να γράφω νέο υλικό και επιτέλους φαίνεται ότι έχω έναν τραγουδιστή που είναι πρόθυμος να δουλέψει και να βάλει την καρδιά του και την ψυχή του πάνω σε νέα μουσική. Οι υπόλοιποι τραγουδιστές με τους οποίους δούλεψα από το 2000 και μετά, προσπαθούσαν μόνο να αντιγράψουν ένα ήδη υπάρχον τραγούδι μόνο και μόνο για να κάνουμε μία συναυλία. Το να γράψεις έναν καλό δίσκο θέλει χρόνο και δέσμευση. Έψαχνα άτομα που είναι πρόθυμοι να το κάνουν αυτό από το 2000.

Rockoverdose.gr: Είχατε κάποιες ένδοξες στιγμές την δεκαετία του ’80 αλλά από εκεί και μετά δεν είχατε την ανάλογη συνέχεια. Γιατί νομίζεις ότι έγινε αυτό;

Gorle: Το συγκρότημα διαλύθηκε το 1989 πριν την κυκλοφορία του “One Small Voice”. Αυτό ήταν ένα χτύπημα. Την ώρα που κυκλοφορούσε ο δίσκος, τα υπόλοιπα μέλη συνέχιζαν να χρησιμοποιούν το όνομα της μπάντας μου παράνομα. Οι ενέργειες τους, τους έκαναν να χάσουν το συμβόλαιο, και τελικά κέρδισα την αγωγή που έκανα για να υπερασπιστώ το όνομα στο τέλος του 1990. Το έχω πει πολλές φορές από το 2000 και μετά οπότε δεν χρειάζεται να μπούμε σε πολλές λεπτομέρειες. Δεν έχω δει τον Michael (Jackson, πλήκτρο) και τον Steve (Benito, φωνητικά) από τότε αλλά τα βρήκαμε με τον Ray και τον Derek και πλέον βλέπω μπροστά.

 

Rockoverdose.gr: Paul Davidson, Steve Benito. Δύο εξαιρετικοί τραγουδιστές. Ποιες είναι κατά τη γνώμη σου οι βασικές διαφορές τους;

Gorle: Προτιμώ να αφήνω τους άλλους να σχηματίσουν την γνώμη τους για τις διαφορές μεταξύ τους. Ο Paul και ο Steve είναι δύο εντελώς διαφορετικές προσωπικότητες. Έχουν διαφορετικές επιρροές και διαφορετικές ικανότητες. Είναι επίσης πολύ διαφορετικοί στην σκηνή. Θα είναι πολύ ενδιαφέρον για μένα να ακούσω τον Paul να ερμηνεύει κομμάτια του Steve στην περιοδεία. Όσο καταπληκτικός τραγουδιστής και να είναι ο Steve, μπορούσε να ερμηνεύει ένα ή δύο κομμάτια από το “Graceful Inheritance” τόσο καλά όσο ο Paul. Υπάρχει μία άποψη ότι ο Steve ερμήνευε μόνο ένα κομμάτι καλύτερα από τον Paul αλλά στην πραγματικότητα είναι προσωπική άποψη του καθενός. Πάντως νομίζω ότι με τον Paul μπορούμε να παίξουμε πιο επιθετική μουσική.

 

Rockoverdose.gr: Ο Davidson γιατί αντικαταστάθηκε από τον Steve;

Gorle: Στις αρχές του 1987, ο Paul άρχισε να αναπτύσσει κάποιες άσχημες συνήθειες και άρχισε να χάνει την φωνή του. Μια μέρα ήρθε και μου είπε πως ένιωθε ότι έπρεπε να φύγει από το συγκρότημα και να βάλει την ζωή του σε μία τάξη. Από καταπληκτική σύμπτωση έτυχε να έχουμε ακούσει πιο πριν τον Steve και έτσι επικοινωνήσαμε μαζί του και κάναμε την μετάβαση σχετικά γρήγορα χωρίς να χρειαστεί να ακυρώσουμε την συναυλία που είχαμε προγραμματίσει για μερικές εβδομάδες αργότερα στις 4 Ιουλίου 1987. Ο Steve έκανε ότι καλύτερο μπορούσε για να μάθει τα τραγούδια. Ηχογραφήσαμε την συναυλία εκείνη για έναν live δίσκο και βίντεο, αλλά υπήρχαν διάφορα θέματα με τον εξοπλισμό ο οποίος έκανε την ποιότητα όχι τόσο καλή. Ένα από τα βίντεο εκείνης της συναυλίας είναι διαθέσιμα στην σελίδα μου στο Facebook και στο κανάλι μου στο YouTube, ApparentlyMusic.

Rockoverdose.gr: Αν δεν κάνω λάθος, είσαι ιδιοκτήτης του ονόματος Heir Apparent. Τι έγινε με τον δίσκο “One Small Voice” και εμφανίζεσαι ως guest μουσικός;

Gorle: Το ότι δεν αναφέρομαι στον δίσκο, και το ότι αφαίρεσαν την φωτογραφία μου από τον δίσκο, ήταν ένα ατυχές αποτέλεσμα της κακίας που δέχτηκα από αυτούς που έπαιρναν τις αποφάσεις κατά την διάρκεια αυτού του χτυπήματος. Όπως είπα και πριν νομίζω ότι δεν χρειάζεται να μπω σε πολλές λεπτομέρειες καθώς όλα έχουν ήδη λεχθεί και επιπλέον μου είναι αρκετά δυσάρεστο να τα θυμάμαι. Πρέπει να πω ότι ήταν πραγματικά μία πολύ δύσκολη περίοδος για μένα, τους φίλους μου και όσους είχαν επενδύσει πάνω μου.

 

Rockoverdose.gr: Έρχεστε στην Ελλάδα για δύο συναυλίες από τις τέσσερις που έχετε ανακοινώσει. Πως και έρχεστε σε μία μικρή χώρα και όχι σε μεγαλύτερη όπως Αγγλία ή Γερμανία (εκτός από το Wurzburg);

Gorle: Έχουμε, οικογένειες, δουλειές και ευθύνες στην καθημερινή μας ζωή. Μπορούμε να λείπουμε από το σπίτι χωρίς να βγάζουμε χρήματα για μία εβδομάδα. Όταν ο Oliver μας προσέφερε μία θέση στο Metal Assault II, ανακοινώσαμε ότι θα θέλαμε να προσθέσουμε μερικές ακόμα συναυλίες. Οι πρώτοι διοργανωτές που μας απάντησαν είχαν και την προσοχή μας. Ο οποιοσδήποτε διοργανωτής μπορεί να επικοινωνήσει μαζί μου όποτε θέλει για να συζητήσουμε για συναυλίες. Απλά ζητούμε τα έξοδα μεταφοράς και διαμονής. Για παράδειγμα τώρα θα χάσουμε 8 μέρες δουλειάς για να κάνουμε αυτό το ταξίδι. Κοστίζει σε εμάς όσο κοστίζει και στους διοργανωτές για να έρθουμε. Η μόνη διαφορά είναι ότι δεν έχουμε την δυνατότητα να βγάλουμε αυτά τα λεφτά, πόσο μάλλον να βγάλουμε κέρδος. Οι διοργανωτές μπορούν. Θα βγάλουν κέρδος. Είναι και αυτοί οπαδοί και τους αξίζει να επιβραβευθούν για την επένδυση τους και την δουλειά που κάνουν εκ μέρους όλων των οπαδών για τους οποίους δουλεύουν. Επιστρέφουμε στο σπίτι μετά από μία πτήση 20 ωρών και μετά θα έχουμε jetlag για δύο μέρες, και την Δευτέρα αμέσως μετά επιστρέφουμε στις δουλειές μας… και η ζωή συνεχίζεται. Χάνουμε χρήματα. Η πληρωμή μας είναι η εμπειρία, οι μνήμες, οι φιλίες, και το να ευχαριστούμε τους οπαδούς μας. Άρα είναι αδύνατο για εμάς να κάνουμε ένα μεγαλύτερο ταξίδι χωρίς να πληρωνόμαστε.

 

Rockoverdose.gr: Τι να περιμένουμε από αυτές τις δύο συναυλίες;

Gorle: LOL! Χμμμ…. Sex, drugs and rock and roll;;; Δε ξέρω! Μπορείτε να περιμένετε ότι θα βάλω τα δυνατά μου για να σας ευχαριστήσω! Σοβαρά τώρα, αυτή η περιοδεία είναι πολύ ιδιαίτερη για μένα. Θέλω να μαζέψω τις καλύτερες εμπειρίες, και είμαι πολύ χαρούμενος που μπορώ να φέρω την αυθεντική σύνθεση πίσω στην Ευρώπη. Οι τέσσερις μας δεν έχουμε βρεθεί στην ίδια σκηνή από το Bochum της Γερμανίας, τον Ιούνιο του 1986. Θα είσαστε το επόμενο κεφάλαιο στην ιστορία των Heir Apparent και θα κάνουμε την εμφάνιση της ζωής μας.

 

Rockoverdose.gr: Θα υπάρχει κάποιο special merchandise;

Gorle: Δεν έχουμε τρόπο να μεταφέρουμε περισσότερες αποσκευές. Το merchandise είναι διαθέσιμο από το  http://www.heirapparent.com/order.htm, ή θα φτάσει στους χώρους συναυλιών. Και περισσότερο θα κυκλοφορήσει μετά την περιοδεία με την μορφή ενός αναμνηστικού CD/DVD 😉

 

Rockoverdose.gr: Έχεις κάποιο μήνυμα για τους Έλληνες οπαδούς;

Gorle: Πριν λίγο με ρώτησες γιατί παίζουμε σε μία μικρή χώρα σαν την Ελλάδα αντί σε μία μεγάλη χώρα. Ο λόγος είναι ο εξής: οι Έλληνες οπαδοί είναι καταπληκτικοί! Είμαι πραγματικά ευγνώμων από την απίστευτη υποστήριξη και αφοσίωση. Έχω κάνει μερικούς πολύ καλούς φίλους στην Ελλάδα όλα αυτά τα χρόνια, και είναι τιμή για μένα να μου ζητάνε να επιστρέψω στην γενέτειρα του πολιτισμού, της δημοκρατίας και μία χώρα τέτοιας ιστορικής σημασίας και ομορφιάς.

Rockoverdose.gr had the chance to speak with the founder and guitarist of Heir Apparent, Terry Gorle about the band's future plans, its history and their forthcoming shows

 

 

Rockoverdose.gr: Hi Terry, welcome to Rock Overdose! So Heir Apparent are back with the original lineup. Would you like to tell us a few things about it?

I've been hoping to get the original band together for a long time.  Now, it appears we're finally able to do it.  Ray contacted me several months ago, and I was able to contact Paul and Derek in September.  Now, we are planning these shows, and Paul has shown interest in doing another album.  At this point, I am open for anything and hoping for the best.

Rockoverdose.gr: In your official website you have only 4 shows announced. Are you planning to do more shows?

We plan to play a local show in Seattle before going to Germany.  We have not made any plans for other shows after the tour at this time.  It will depend on our availability and the opportunities that occur afterward.

 

Rockoverdose.gr: After these special shows will you record any new material? Are there any unreleased tracks from that period?

As I mentioned earlier, Paul has expressed interest in recording a new album.  So, we will begin work on that when we return.  There are a few remaining recordings that are unreleased, and some will be available soon.... I'm sure I could go back and find many old recordings of special moments from rehearsals or during the songwriting process, but I imagine every band has those types of things that they never make public.  I have been far more interested in making new music for the past 10 years, and it appears I finally have a vocalist who is willing to do the work to put his heart and soul into new music.  The other vocalists I've played with since 2000 have only made the effort to copy an existing song for the purpose of playing a concert.  Writing a good album takes time and commitment. I've been looking for people who are willing to make that commitment since 2000.

 

Rockoverdose.gr: You have a glorious moments at late 80's but after that not much have happened. Why do you think this happened?

The band dissolved in 1989 before the release of One Small Voice.  There was a coup.  By the time One Small Voice was released, ex-members continued to use my band name Heir Apparent illegally. Their actions lost them the recording contract, and I eventually won my lawsuit to defend my trade name at the end of 1990.  I have explained this in so many interviews since 2000, it is no longer necessary to go into elaborate detail.  I have not seen Michael or Steve, but I have made my peace with Ray and Derek, and I'm moving forward now.

 

Rockoverdose.gr: Paul Davidson, Steve Benito. Two great singers. What are their basic differences in your opinion?

I prefer to let everyone else make their determination of the differences from a singing or personal preference standpoint.  Paul and Steve are two completely different personalities. They have different inspirations, different influences, and different capabilities.  They are also very different on stage. It will be interesting for me to hear how Paul handles some of Steve's songs during this tour.  As remarkable as Steve is as a vocalist, there were only one or two songs that he could do from the Graceful Inheritance album as well as Paul.  It is arguable that there may be only one song Steve could perform better than Paul from that album, but that is still up to individual preference, and only then because their voices suit certain styles of music better than others.  In general, I think we can play more aggressive music with Paul.

Rockoverdose.gr: Why Davidson was replaced by Benito?

In early 1987, Paul developed some bad habits and began losing his voice. He came to me one day and told me that he felt he needed to leave the band and get his life in order.  It was by sheer coincidence that we had already heard of Steve, so we were able to contact him and make the transition relatively quickly without cancelling the concert we had scheduled just a few weeks ahead, on July 4, 1987.  Steve did his best to learn the songs quickly. That concert was recorded for a live album/video, but there were issues with the audio and video equipment that made the quality of the recording unacceptable.  One of the video clips from that concert is available to watch on my Facebook page and my YouTube channel, ApparentlyMusic.
 

Rockoverdose.gr: Αs far as I know, you are the owner of the Heir Apparent brand name. What happened in the "One Voice Album" and you seem like a guest musician?

My lack of proper credits and the removal of my photo from One Small Voice was an unfortunate result of the malice I suffered from those making decisions during the coup.  Again, I prefer to not go into detail since the story has already been provided elsewhere, and it is very depressing for me to relive.  Suffice it to say that it was an extremely devastating period for me, and for all my friends and investors who were equally betrayed by these actions.

Rockoverdose.gr: So you are coming to Greece for 2 concerts of the 4 you've announced. How come you play in our small country and not in bigger countries like, England, Germany (except Wurzburg) etc?

We have families, jobs, and responsibilities in our daily lives.  We can only afford to be away from home without earning money for one week.  When Oliver offered us a position at Metal Assault II, we announced that we would like to add a few more shows. The first promoters to respond received our attention.  Any promoter can contact me any time to discuss concerts.  We simply require that travel expenses and accommodations are paid for a one week trip.  For instance, we will each miss 8 days of work to make this trip, so it is costing us just as much as the promoters are investing to make it happen.  The only difference is that we have no possibility to recoup that money, let alone make a profit.  But, the promoters do.  They will recoup their money, and make a profit.  They are fans themselves, and they deserve to be rewarded for their investment and hard work on behalf of all the other fans they work for.  We come home after a 20 hour plane flight to two more days of jetlag, then return to work on the following Monday... and life goes on.  We lose money.  Our payment is the experience itself, the memories, the friendships, and giving thanks to the fans. All this being said, it would be impossible for us to make any trip lasting longer than this without being paid for our time.

 

Rockoverdose.gr: What should we expect from these 2 concerts.

LOL! hmm...  sex, drugs, and rock and roll?  I don't know.  You can expect me to do my very best to make you happy that you were there.  😉 In all seriousness, this tour is very special to me.  I want to make the very most from this experience, and I'm very happy that I'm able to bring the original band back to Europe. The four of us have not been on stage together since the Zeche, in Bochum Germany, in June of 1986. You will be the next chapter in the history of Heir Apparent coming full circle, and we want to give you the performance of our lives.

 

Rockoverdose.gr: Are you bringing any cool merchandise?

We have no way to carry extra baggage...  the cool merchandise is available to buy from http://www.heirapparent.com/order.htm , or it will arrive at the venues.  And, more will appear after the tour in the way of commemorative CD/DVD's.   😉

Rockoverdose.gr: Is there any message to the Greek fans?

Earlier you asked why we are playing two shows in a small country instead of more shows in larger places... this is the reason:  The Greek fans are amazing! I am incredibly thankful and appreciative of their gracious support and devotion.  I have made some very good friends in Greece over the years, and it is an honor for me to be asked to return again to the birthplace of modern civilization, democracy, and home of so much historical significance and beauty.
