H 18η έκδοση του UP THE HAMMERS FESTIVAL είναι προ των πυλών και το RockOverdose βρήκε την ευκαιρία να μάθει τα τελευταία νέα των συγκροτημάτων που θα εμφανιστούν στην Αθήνα, προκειμένου να προετοιμαστούμε καταλλήλως για το πιο metal τριήμερο του Μαρτίου.
Πάμε να δούμε τί απάντησαν μερικά από τα συγκροτήματα σε κοινές για όλους ερωτήσεις, ξεκινώντας από την Warm Up Day, που θα λάβει χώρα την Πέμπτη 7 Μαρτίου στο An Club και στην οποία θα εμφανιστούν: το νεοσύστατο occult σχήμα από την Αθήνα SATURDAY NIGHT SATAN, οι Γερμανοί Hard rock/heavy metallers LYNX, οι Πορτογάλοι epic metallers DOLMEN GATE, οι παλιές καραβάνες οι αγαπητοί Ιταλοί heavy/speed metallers WITCHUNTER, οι SENTRY, το σχήμα που δημιούργησαν τα εναπομείναντα μέλη των θρυλικών Manilla Road, Bryan Patrick, Kalli Coldsmith, Phil Ross και Neudi και ο ορισμός του ΧΕΒΙΜΕΤΑΛΛΑΡΑ ειδικά την τελευταία δεκαετία, NIGHT DEMON!

Σας καλωσορίζουμε στο RockOverdose. Πώς είστε αυτό τον καιρό και τί ετοιμάζεται ως group;
SATURDAY NIGHT SATAN: Βρισκόμαστε λίγο καιρό πριν την κυκλοφορία του ντεμπούτο full album μας, με τίτλο “All Things Black” μέσω της Made of Stone Recordings, προβάρουμε, επενδύουμε χρόνο και ενέργεια στο συγκρότημα και ελπίζουμε στα καλύτερα για το μέλλον!
DOLMEN GATE: Γειά σου Άγγελε! Είμαστε πολύ απασχολημένοι και προετοιμαζόμαστε για τα επερχόμενα σόου (συμπεριλαμβανομένου του Up The Hammers φυσικά). Ήδη παίξαμε μερικά σόου τις τελευταίες εβδομάδες και το πράγματα κυλάνε καλά!
WITCHUNTER: Γεια σε όλους στο RockOverdose.gr. Αυτή τη στιγμή ως συγκρότημα πραγματοποιούμε μερικά προγραμματισμένα shows που περιλαμβάνουν ξεκάθαρα το Up The Hammers και μετά κάποια shows στη Γερμανία για τον Απρίλιο και άλλα που περιμένουν επιβεβαίωση.
Εν τω μεταξύ, προωθήσαμε το τελευταίο μας άλμπουμ METAL DREAM με πολλές ζωντανές εμφανίσεις, όπως στο Metalheadz Open Air, στο Trvheim Festival και στο Keep It True Rising τον Οκτώβριο.
Επομένως κάνουμε πολλές πρόβες στο μέγιστο δυνατό, για να προσφέρουμε τις καλύτερες συναυλίες σε όλους τους Metal Maniacs που θα είναι παρόντες στις συναυλίες μας… αλλά στο μεταξύ έχουμε ήδη ξεκινήσει να γράφουμε νέο υλικό.
SENTRY: Αρχικά θα ήθελα να μοιραστώ τα συναισθήματά μου για το πόσο ενθουσιασμένος είμαι που επιστρέφω στην Αθήνα. Το να παίξεις το φεστιβάλ Up the Hammers είναι πραγματικά τόσο κοντά στο να είσαι στον παράδεισο. Νιώθω πως ο Mark Shelton είναι περήφανος και χαμογελά, για αυτό που δημιουργήσαμε με τους Sentry.
Σε έναν κόσμο με αμέτρητα συγκροτήματα, πώς αποφασίσατε να δημιουργήσετε το δικό σας, ποια ήταν η έμπνευση και ποιες οι επιρροές σας; Τι πιστεύετε ότι έχετε να προσφέρετε στους ακροατές;
SATURDAY NIGHT SATAN: Δεν αποτέλεσε ποτέ για εμάς κίνητρο ή εμπόδιο η πληθώρα μουσικών προσπαθειών που υπάρχει εκεί έξω. Γράφουμε και παίζουμε μουσική για να εκφραστούμε και να εκτονωθούμε. Ως προς το τι έχουμε να προσφέρουμε, νομίζω πως όπως όλοι όσοι δημιουργούν, ελπίζουμε κυρίως πως κάποιος από τους αποδέκτες του υλικού μας, θα βρει ένα κομμάτι του εαυτού του μέσα στις δημιουργίες μας.
DOLMEN GATE: Αρχικά πριν γίνουμε μέλη συγκροτήματος, είμαστε όλοι οπαδοί του heavy metal. Αυτό είναι το πιο σημαντικό πράγμα κι αυτό είναι που παίρνεις: Heavy metal φτιαγμένο από οπαδούς για άλλους οπαδούς. Οι Dolmen Gate σχηματίστηκαν όταν ο Kiko κι ο Alex άρχισαν να τζαμάρουν (σύντομα αφού οι Ravensire διέλυσαν) και αργότερα με προσκάλεσαν. Αφού ο Alex μπήκε στους Ravensire, σχηματίσαμε ένα δεσμό και όταν άρχισε να με πιέζει να εισχωρήσω στη νέα του ασχολία με τον Kiko, κατέληξα να δεχτώ και έκτοτε, τα πράγματα κύλησα απαλά, ειδικά όταν η Ana μπήκε στο συγκρότημα (και αργότερα ο Artur φυσικά). Οι επιρροές μας είναι ότι έχει ωμό πάθος και heavy metal ποιότητα! Οτιδήποτε μπορεί να ταιριάξει. Πρόσφατα έχουμε εντυπωσιαστεί πολύ από την Ελληνική Black metal σκηνή, ειδικά υλικό όπως των Varathron, Yoth Iria, Katavasia και τέτοιο στυλ. Αλλά φυσικά τα κλασικά θα είναι πάντα κλασικά: Manowar, Iron Maiden, Doomsword, Bathory κλπ.
WITCHUNTER: Το συγκρότημα ιδρύθηκε το 2007 απλώς κινούμενο από την αγάπη για το Heavy Metal, τη φιλία μεταξύ των μελών του συγκροτήματος και τη σωστή δόση θυμού, αποφασιστικότητας και ακραίας διασκέδασης.
Ίδρυσα το συγκρότημα επηρεασμένος κυρίως από το NWOBHM, το ευρωπαϊκό Heavy/Speed Metal της δεκαετίας του '80 και τους KISS μια από τις εμμονές μας... είναι οι αγαπημένοι μου "σούπερ ήρωες"... Όσον αφορά τον ήχο, εκτός από τις «ιερές» επιταγές του Heavy Metal, πρέπει να ληφθεί υπόψη ότι η προσέγγιση συνδέεται και με το Hard Rock... πάντα προσπαθούσαμε να ενισχύσουμε την «προσωπικότητα» των μελών του συγκροτήματος και να αναζητήσουμε πιο "προσωπικό ήχο" και προσέγγιση, έστω και μέσα σε ένα ξεκάθαρο παράγωγο είδος. Πιστεύω ότι καταφέραμε σε μεγάλο βαθμό να πετύχουμε αυτό το αποτέλεσμα.
Επιπλέον, οι ζωντανές εμφανίσεις είναι μια από τις αγαπημένες μας στιγμές ... ήταν πάντα προτεραιότητα να δουλεύουμε για να προσφέρουμε υπέροχα show στους θαυμαστές μας και όχι μόνο... η σκηνική συνιστώσα παίζει σημαντικό ρόλο. Μελετάμε πολύ καλά τις εμφανίσεις μας, από σεβασμό προς αυτούς που έρχονται να μας ακούσουν και προσπαθούμε να μεταφέρουμε όλα μας τα συναισθήματα από σκηνής. Αυτό που παραμένει γεγονός είναι πως είμαστε «Metalheads που παίζουν για Metalheads»: δέρμα, καρφιά, αίμα, μέγιστη ένταση και Heavy Metal είναι τα κύρια στοιχεία των συναυλιών μας.
SENTRY: Η μουσική είναι "προικισμένη" από την εκπληκτική προσοχή του Kalli στη λεπτομέρεια. Από την αρχή μέχρι το τέλος είχε πολλή δουλειά να κάνει. Ο Phil έγραψε ένα τραγούδι και ο Neudi έφτιαξε ένα ακόμη επίσης. Είχα την ευθύνη να γράψω τους στίχους. Μπορώ να σας πω ότι αυτό ήταν το πρώτο για μένα, αλλά και το πιο δύσκολο. Κάθε τραγούδι είχε τον τρόπο να μου θυμίσει τον Mark. Καθόμουν πολλά χρόνια μαζί του και ερευνούσα υλικό, μαθαίνοντας πως γίνεται. Τώρα ήρθε η ώρα να βάλω λίγη από τη σοφία και γνώση αυτή στο χαρτί. Έκανα ό,τι καλύτερο μπορούσα για να τιμήσω τον αδερφό μου και ελπίζω όλοι να απολαύσουν τη μουσική των Sentry όσο κι εμείς!
Πώς νιώθετε για τη συμμετοχή σας στο UP THE HAMMERS FESTIVAL και που θα μοιραστείτε τη σκηνή με τόσο σπουδαία συγκροτήματα;
SATURDAY NIGHT SATAN: Το Up The Hammers Festival είναι όντως ένα ιστορικό φεστιβάλ, που έχει σχεδόν συμπληρώσει την δεύτερη δεκαετία ζωής του και είναι φυσικά τιμή μας να βρισκόμαστε εκεί. Το ότι αυτό εν τω μεταξύ θα αποτελέσει και την πρώτη συναυλιακή μας εμφάνιση ever, μας δίνει και μια πολύ αισιόδοξη νότα για το μέλλον!
DOLMEN GATE: Μιλώντας από τη μεριά μου, έχω ήδη έρθει στο UTH αμέτρητες φορές από το 2007. Πάντα ένιωθα σπίτι μου στην Αθήνα μια κι έχουμε πολύ όμοιες κουλτούρες (βασικά… στη νότια Ευρώπη, όλοι μας προερχόμαστε από την αρχαία Ελλάδα σίγουρα, χα χα). Είμαι πάντα εντυπωσιασμένος από το πάθος που έχουν οι Έλληνες οπαδοί με ότι έχει να κάνει με το heavy metal. Είμαστε αδερφές ψυχές. Θα φέρουμε αίμα, ιδρώτα και συναίσθημα στη σκηνή και δε θα μπορούσαμε να ζητήσουμε περισσότερα από το να κάνουμε το ντεμπούτο μας στο An Club, ένα μυθικό μέρος στην Ευρωπαϊκή underground σκηνή!
WITCHUNTER:Για εμάς είναι ξεκάθαρα τιμή να συμμετέχουμε στο Up the Hammers Festival, το οποίο εδώ και καιρό είναι ένα από τα σημεία αναφοράς ανάμεσα στις καλύτερες συναυλίες στην Ευρώπη για τους Metalheads. Θα τιμήσουμε τη συμμετοχή μας με ένα υπέροχο, έντονο και αληθινό Show όπου σίγουρα θα πρωταγωνιστήσει το HEAVY METAL. Ανυπομονούμε... “…if its' too Loud... You are too old!!!”
SENTRY: Πως να μην αγαπήσεις ένα τέτοιο soldout festival! Το να παίζω με τόσες απίθανες μπάντες που πραγματικά λατρεύω είναι το καλύτερο συναίσθημα! Το να μοιράζεσαι τη σκηνή με τους metal αδερφούς είναι ονειρικό, EPIC!
Πόσο ικανοποιημένοι είστε από το πιο πρόσφατο υλικό σας και τι να περιμένουμε ως ακροατές;
SATURDAY NIGHT SATAN: Είμαστε πολύ ικανοποιημένοι γιατί δεν κάναμε πίσω σε κανένα στάδιο της δημιουργίας. Ψάξαμε το μέσα μας και αποτυπώσαμε σε μουσική, στίχους, παραγωγή και εικαστικά, κάτι που μας καλύπτει απόλυτα. Ως ακροατές μπορείτε να περιμένετε κάτι έντονο, sexy και χορευτικό με μεγάλες δόσεις metal ψυχής. It’s the devil’s music!
DOLMEN GATE: Το “Finis Imperii” demo μας ήταν απλά το πρώτο βήμα στο ταξίδι μας. Βασικά ηχογραφήσαμε μερικά ακόμα κομμάτια γι’αυτή τη διαδικασία (4 σύνολο), μια και είχαμε την ιδέα να κυκλοφορήσουμε ένα mini cd. Στείλαμε αυτά τα τραγούδια σε μερικές εταιρείες, και προς έκπληξη μας, είχαμε ιδιαίτερα αρκετούς ενδιαφερόμενους να κυκλοφορήσουν τη μουσική μας. Παρ’όλα αυτά, όλοι συμβούλευαν να κυκλοφορήσουμε ένα δίσκο. Αυτό σήμαινε να τελειώσουμε τη σύνθεση μερικών ακόμα τραγουδιών, αλλά αυτό θα έπαιρνε μερικό χρόνο, έτσι αποφασίσαμε να κυκλοφορήσυμε δυο από αυτά τα κομμάτια (συν ένα intro) ως demo, έτσι ώστε τα πράγματα να κυλήσουν και να παρουσιάσουμε τη μπάντα στον κόσμο!
WITCHUNTER: Είμαστε πραγματικά πολύ ικανοποιημένοι από το τελευταίο μας άλμπουμ "Metal Dream" τόσο από καλλιτεχνική άποψη όσο και από το πώς πάνε τα πράγματα. Στην πραγματικότητα, κάθε μουσικός έχει την τάση να θέλει να αλλάξει κάτι από ένα ήδη γραμμένο άλμπουμ μετά από πολλές ακροάσεις... αλλά πιστεύω ότι κάθε άλμπουμ αντιπροσωπεύει το συγκρότημα εκείνη τη συγκεκριμένη στιγμή και ειλικρινά αυτό είναι ένα από τα όμορφα και μαγικά πράγματα που σχετίζονται με τη δημιουργία και παραγωγή ενός άλμπουμ, επομένως με βάση αυτή τη δήλωση δεν θα άλλαζα τίποτα.
SENTRY: Πρόκειται για υλικό που έχει γραφτεί με συναίσθημα και ζωντανά θα είναι heavy as fuck!
Ποια είναι τα μελλοντικά σας σχέδια μετά την εμφάνισή σας στο UTH;
SATURDAY NIGHT SATAN: Αργότερα μέσα στον Μάρτιο μοιραζόμαστε την σκηνή με τους Βρετανούς ομοιδεάτες μας, Green Lung, σε Αθήνα και Θεσσαλονίκη και πρόκειται να ανακοινωθεί άλλο ένα show στην γενέτειρά μας. Μετά από εκεί, θα καταβάλουμε -θέλω να πιστεύω- κάθε προσπάθεια για να βοηθήσουμε την μουσική μας να ταξιδέψει σε άλλα μέρη και να ακουστεί από νέους ακροατές. Αυτό είναι και το νόημα άλλωστε!
DOLMEN GATE: Λοιπόν, μετά το Up The Hammers θα παίξουμε στο Warm up του Keep It True, στο Massacre Fest στην Πορτογαλία στις αρχές του Μαϊου και έχουμε ήδη επιβεβαιωθεί για ένα μεγάλο φεστιβάλ εδώ στην Πορτογαλία το καλοκαίρι (αλλά δε μπορούμε να πούμε ποιο μέχρι να ανακοινωθούμε επίσημα). Επίσης δουλεύουμε για άλλες συναυλίες στη διάρκεια της χρονιάς. Όσο για το άλμπουμ, θα κυκλοφορήσει τον Απρίλιο από τη No Remorse Records κατά τη διάρκεια του Keep It True. Θα ονομάζεται “Gateways To Eternity” και είμαστε πολύ περήφανοι γι’αυτό. Α, και ήδη συνθέτουμε νέα τραγούδια για τον διάδοχο του, χα χα!
WITCHUNTER: Όπως ανέφερα και σε προηγούμενη ερώτηση, μετά το UTH στην Ελλάδα, δύο όμορφα φεστιβάλ μας περιμένουν στη Γερμανία, συμπεριλαμβανομένου του Dying Victims Attack που διοργανώνει η δισκογραφική μας.
Στο εγγύς μέλλον, λοιπόν, σίγουρα θα συνεχίσουμε να παίζουμε ζωντανά, αλλά θα εντείνουμε τις δραστηριότητες για τη δημιουργία του νέου άλμπουμ... Ειλικρινά δεν μπορώ να εκτιμήσω τον ακριβή χρόνο... αλλά σίγουρα είναι πρόθεσή μας να μην αφήσουμε να περάσει πολύς χρόνος μεταξύ το ένα άλμπουμ και το άλλο όπως παλιά. Όσο περιμένουμε να έρθουν αυτές οι παραστάσεις, θα συνεχίσουμε να γράφουμε υλικό για το επόμενο album.

RockOverdose: Hello and welcome to Rock Overdose pages. How do we find you at the moment and which are your latest actions as a band?
SATURDAY NIGHT SATAN: We are just a few days before the release of our debut album, entitled “All Things Black” via Made of Stone Recordings, we are promoting, investing time and energy into the band and hoping for the best for the future!
DOLMEN GATE: Hello Angelos! We are very busy rehearsing and preparing our upcoming shows (including, of course, Up The Hammers). We already played a few shows in the last few weeks and things are rolling!
WITCHUNTER: First of all, greatings to RockOverdose.gr. At the moment as a band we are carrying out the scheduled shows including clearly Up The Hammers, the subsequent shows scheduled in Germany for April and others awaiting confirmation.
In the meantime we promoted our latest album METAL DREAM with many live shows, including Metalheadz Open Air, Trvheim Festival and Keep It True Rising in October.
So a lot of rehersals at maximum volume to offer the best shows to all Metal Maniacs present at our concerts… but in the meantime we have also already started working on writing new material.
SENTRY: First I would like to share my feelings on how excited I am to be back in Athens. To play the Up the Hammers festival is truly as close as it gets to being in heaven. To your question, I can see Mark Sheldon smiling but also feeling honored to what we created in Sentry.
RockOverdose: In a world of countless bands, how did you decide to form yours, which were your inspiration and influences, and what do you believe you have to offer to the fans?
SATURDAY NIGHT SATAN: We have never been motivated or hindered by the plethora of musical endeavors out there. We write and play music to express ourselves and let off steam. As for what we have to offer, I think that like all those who create, we mainly hope that one of the recipients of our material will find a part of themselves in our creations.
DOLMEN GATE: First, before being band members we are all fans of Heavy Metal. That is the most important thing and that is what you get: Heavy Metal made by fans to other fans! DOLMEN GATE was formed when Kiko and Alex started jamming (shortly after RAVENSIRE ended) and later invited me over. After Alex joined RAVENSIRE, we formed a bond and when he started pestering me to go to his new thing with Kiko, I ended up accepting and from then on, things went smoothly, especially when Ana joined (and later Artur, of course). Our influences are anything that has raw passion and Heavy Metal quality! Anything can go… Lately we have been very impressed by the Greek Black Metal scene, especially stuff like Varathron, Yoth Iria, Katavasia and stuff like that. But of course, the classics will always be classics: Manowar, Iron Maiden, Doomsword, Bathory, etc!
WITCHUNTER: The band was founded in 2007 simply animated by the love for Heavy Metal, the friendship between the band members and the right dose of anger, determination and extreme fun. I founded the band mainly influenced by NWOBHM, 80s European Heavy/Speed Metal and KISS one of our obsessions... they are my favorite "superheroes"…
As far as the sound is concerned, in addition to the "sacred" dictates of Heavy Metal, it must be considered that the approach is also linked to Hard Rock... we have always tried to enhance the "personality" of the musicians present in the band and to look for a "our personal sound and approach", even if within a clearly derivative genre. I believe that we have largely managed to achieve this result. Furthermore, the live environment is one of our favorite aspects... it has always been a priority to work to offer great shows to our fans and beyond... where the stage component also has an important role. We study our shows very well... I find this a form of respect towards those who come to listen to us and we try to convey all our emotions from the stage. The fact remains that we are “Metalheads who play for Metalheads”: leather, spikes, blood, maximum volume and Heavy Metal “in the best tradition” are the main elements of our shows.
SENTRY: The music was gifted by Kalli's amazing attention to detail. From start to finish he had a lot of work to do. Phil wrote one song and Neudi worked up a song as well. I was in charge of writing the lyrics. I can tell you this was a first for me, but also the most difficult also. Each song had some sort of way to pull me back to Mark. I had many years of sitting with the old man researching material, learning the ways. Now it was time for me to put some of the wisdom to paper. I did the best I could to honor my brother and I hope everyone will enjoy Sentry as much as we do!
RockOverdose: What did you know about Up The Hammers as a festival and how do you feel that you will be a part of it? What should we wait from your performance?
SATURDAY NIGHT SATAN: Up The Hammers Festival is indeed a historic festival, almost in its second decade of life, and of course we are honored to be there. The fact that this will also be our first concert appearance ever, gives us a very optimistic note for the future!
DOLMEN GATE: Speaking on my behalf, I have already been to Up The Hammers countless times since 2007. I have always felt at home in Athens as we have very similar cultures (well… In Southern Europe, we all derive from Ancient Greece anyway ahah). I am always impressed by the passion the Greek fans have for all things Heavy Metal! We are kindred spirits! We will bring blood, sweat and emotion on stage and we could not ask more than to make our debut on An Club, a mythical stage on the European Underground scene!
WITCHUNTER: For us it is clearly an honor to be part of the Up the Hammers Festival which has long been one of the reference points and best concerts in Europe for Metalheads. We will honor our participation with a great, intense and real Show where HEAVY METAL will certainly be the protagonist. We can't wait... “…if its' too Loud... You are too old!!!”
SENTRY: A very emotional, heavy as fuck performance!
RockOverdose: What is your opinion on your last material and how much satisfied are you from it? Would you change anything if you had the chance?
SATURDAY NIGHT SATAN: We are very satisfied because we did not back down at any stage of creation. We searched for it within ourselves and captured it in music, lyrics, production and visuals, something that covers us completely. As listeners you can expect something intense, sexy and danceable with heavy doses of metal soul. It's the devil's music!
DOLMEN GATE: Our “Finis Imperii” Demo was just the first step in our journey. We actually recorded a couple more songs on those sessions (four in total), as we had the idea to release a mini-CD. We sent those songs to a few labels and to our surprise, we had quite a few interested in releasing our music. However, all were suggesting we release an album. That meant we had to finish composing a few more songs, but that could take some time, so we opted to release two of those songs (plus one intro) as a Demo, just to start things rolling and present the band to the world!
WITCHUNTER: We are really very satisfied of our latest album Metal Dream both from an artistic point of view and with how things are going. In reality, every musician would tend to change something from a previously written album after many listens... but I believe that each album represents the band at that specific moment and honestly this is one of the beautiful and magical things relating to the writing and production of an album, therefore on the basis about this statement I wouldn't change anything.
SENTRY: The music was gifted by Kalli's amazing attention to detail. From start to finish he had a lot of work to do. Phil wrote one song and Neudi worked up a song as well. I was in charge of writing the lyrics. I can tell you this was a first for me, but also the most difficult also. Each song had some sort of way to pull me back to Mark. I had many years of sitting with the old man researching material, learning the ways. Now it was time for me to put some of the wisdom to paper. I did the best I could to honor my brother and I hope everyone will enjoy Sentry as much as we do!
RockOverdose: Which are your future plans after you play in Greece?
SATURDAY NIGHT SATAN: Later in March we share the stage with our British peers Green Lung in Athens and Thessaloniki and another show in our hometown is to be announced. After that, we will - I want to believe - make every effort to help our music travel to other places and be heard by new listeners. That's the point, after all!
DOLMEN GATE: Well, after Up The Hammers we’ll play the Warm Up at Keep It True, the Massacre Fest in Portugal early May and we are also confirmed on a big festival here in Portugal in the summer (but we can’t say which one before we’re officially announced). We are also working on other gigs during the year!
As for the album, it’ll be released in April through No Remorse Records during Keep It True. It’ll be called “Gateways to Eternity” and we’re very proud of it! Oh, and we’re already composing new songs for the follow-up ahah!
WITCHUNTER: As anticipated, after the Festival in Greece, two beautiful Festivals await us in Germany, including the Dying Victims Attack organized by the label.
In the near future we will therefore certainly continue to play live but we will intensify the writing activities of the new album... I honestly cannot estimate an exact timing... but it is certainly our intention not to let too much time pass between one album and the other as in the past. SENTRY: We are already booked for a couple of festivals in Germany in September this year, StormCrusher Festival and Ragers Elite Festival with possible club shows in between.
While we wait for these shows to come, we will continue to write material for the next opus.
